Derek Boateng: We're satisfied with the 2-0 victory

Midfielder Derek Boateng is not overly worried that the Black Stars could not beat Malawi by a bigger scoreline as was the wish of an expectant home crowd at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana won 2-0 to take a huge step towards qualifying for the next African Cup of Nations but Ghanaians wanted more. Dinpro of Ukraine star Boateng is however adamant that the Black Stars gave their all against opponents who were not afraid to exhibit their own skills.

“You can see it was a very difficult game, Malawi showed that they can play. They are a very good side and were not afraid to play their game,” Boateng told 90 MINUTES right on the turf just after the game. Derek who came on in the second half to replace Jordan Ayew continued: “I saw how good they were when I was on the bench and I came in with a strategy for them but overall they are good. They can play good football which made it difficult for us that’s why we are happy to win, 2-0 is not bad and we will take it.”

The former Getafe man also got the rare opportunity to wear the captain’s armband for the last 7 minutes or so after stand-in captain Asamoah Gyan made way.

“Being captain or not, I am happy. I just want to play and help my nation to do well. What is important is that we are leading by two goals and if we go there, they have to win by 3 goals which will not be easy for any team,” Derek told 90 MINUTES.

He added: “They are going to play more offensive because they are not afraid to come forward and we will also be ready to take advantage.”Credit:
