William Tiero eyes Black Stars comeback

Believe it or not but 31 year old former Asante Kotoko and national team star William Tiero is still eyeing a return to the Black Stars.

Tiero has exclusively told 90 MINUTES from his Portuguese base that he has keenly followed the national team under the tutelage of Kwasi Appiah and praying that the “cool” Appiah will cast his scouting net wider to include him as he returns to the Portuguese top flight league after a spell in the Arab world.

After playing for Academica from 2008 to 2010, Tiero switched countries to Bulgaria where he signed for CSKA Sofia but was back in Portugal to play the latter half of 2010/11 season at Olhanense. Tiero then moved to Saudi Arabia to join former Ghana coach Mariano Barreto at Al Quadisiya featuring in 15 games and netting one goal in the 2011/12 season.

Now he’s back in Portugal after joining Gil Vicente FC on a one year deal with an option to extend it by another year.

“It’s okay here and I played so many years here so the people know me. I just prefer going back to Portugal again, I can go back to Al Quadisiya again you know football,” Tiero told us. He continued: “I’m still playing soccer so if my country calls me I will be delighted. I’m working for the club, myself, my family and everyone so definitely I have to play well to get better offers because this is my job.”

He said of the new Ghana coach: “He’s good, I’vebeen with him in camp before and he is cool and always with the players. God bless everyone and best of luck to the national team for the upcoming matches.” The Portugal based player also insists it’s not ripe for national team captain John Mensah to retire from the Black Stars.

“No I don’t believe so because in football, the more you grow, the more experience you get and sometimes it scares opposing players since he has played so long. For me, he’s okay. I’m playing and I know how experienced players are confident and control games,” Tiero explained.
