University of Ghana for Casablanca rugby 7’s

The University of Ghana will be the nation’s sole representative at this year’s Casablanca University rugby 7’s tournament scheduled to come off in Morocco’s second city from March 30 – 31.

It would be the second year running that Ghana’s premier University would be participating in this competition which will see universities from other African countries participating.

Last year, the University of Ghana team won bronze in the bowl division of the competition and hopes to improve on that performance at this year’s event.

The team is expected to depart Accra on March 26 for Casablanca ahead of the start of the competition which this year, promises to be keenly contested.

The team would be led by a high ranking official of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate together with head coach Julius Amevor.

A more experienced team would be presented by the University of Ghana team this year and they will include; Adjiri Jonas, Mustapha Awudu Jafaru, Alex Antwi, Philip Asomani, Avormey Solomon, Richard Koranteng, Blackman Bulla Ralph, Segbefia A. Prince, Kalu Obinna, Joshua Akornor, Marshall Nortey (Captain) and, David Kilt

The Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) has expressed full support for the team as they embark on this adventure and has congratulated University of Ghana for funding the team to attend this tournament.

Meanwhile, the GRA has announced the appointment of Sidney Yankson as Chairman of its Finance and Fundraising Committee.

Mr. Sidney Yankson has also been co-opted as a member of the Board of the Association and his job will initially focus on three financial objectives; national team development, increasing the quality of school and university level sport and improving access to youth and mini rugby nationwide.

He has 17 years finance experience in London and Hong Kong and has extensive contacts within the financial community.

Mr. Yankson is a keen sport and rugby player and has played rugby at amateur level for over 20 years at Durham University and most recently in Hong Kong.
