U-23 AFCON: Edward Sarpong apologizes for crucial penalty miss against South Africa

Black Meteors defender Edward Sarpong has apologised for his costly miss during the penalty shootouts against South Africa in the third place playoff game at the just ended U23 AFCON

The Portugal based left back blasted high what would have been an historic kick to send Ghana through to the Olympics for the first time in 15 years.

The match traveled to penalty shootouts after a pulsating 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The 22 year old was one of three Ghanaians who failed to score from the spot as they lost out 6-5 to the young Bafana.

Sarpong, like many of his teammates, has since been the subject of heavy criticism especially on social media.

Speaking in an interview with Adom 106.3 FM, the crestfallen youngster tendered his unbridled apology to all Ghanaians.

“I will like to plead with all Ghanaians especially those who were affected by it. I am deeply sorry. It wasn’t my intention to the miss that penalty, I was convinced I could score and become the hero of the day but God willed it different. So I beg all Ghanaians for forgiveness and I promise that this won’t happen again.”
