Essien urging Frimpong on to Ghana career

Michael Essien has been convincing Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong to commit his international career to Ghana at a time when the Chelsea midfielder’s own international future is in doubt.

Frimpong has told Citi FM that the Chelsea ace has been key in fueling his Ghana ambitions and says he remains steadfast in his desire to play for the Black Stars.

The 19-year-old returned from a six-month injury lay-off when he played for the Arsenal reserves against Sunderland on Tuesday. He has already represented England at U-16 level, but is eligible to play for Ghana through his parents.

He said: “Michael calls me. When I was injured he called me to see how I am doing. Actually he was the first person to tell me to come and play for Ghana. And it is up to me to think about it just as he told me.

“He has been telling me that playing for Ghana is a big opportunity for my career. I have told so many people that even if God helps me to become one of the best midfielders in the world, I will play for Ghana.”
