JON BEE could have allowed our leaders to handle this issue especially since none of those"fradulent four" posed any security threat or was inolved in drugs.Trust and goodwill are the core reasons why we defer to Great Britain on so many issues. This will quickly erode if Ghana is made to feel subservient and insignificant. When Jon sidestepped our various institutions and leaders to directly and publicly censure our MPs,not only did he set a very flawed precedent which can cut both ways but it delegitimatised our institutions and leaders.I am not defending the"fruadulent four",indeed I think their Diplomaic Passports must be revoked immediately.I am saddened that Jon robbed our institutions and leaders an opportunity to act and grow. And I am also dissapointed at how uncharacteristically injudicious Jon Bee reacted to such a minor infraction considering what else is at stake. There is no doubt the enormous affection, respect and influence he enjoys in Ghana even in areas unrelated to his Official duties,so what was really his need to adopt such an egotist approach which can only create unnecessary future obstacles for both countries?

They did the same thing to me in 1986 when I came to the UK. They wrote to my dad demanding to know WHY i had not kept to the details of the Visa application. That was even before Visa applications became mandatory.
Unfortunately They would enforce the rules if they are dealing with "high profile" cases
That letter did not get to my dad till late so I had to return to Ghana, go to the British High Commission Consular section which was a Labone (just off the RIng ROad East) for a short interview with Miss bain who interviewed me a few months back.
They did that to test the MPs integrity and "decency" so don't talk like you are an illiterate.
I would advise Mr Osei-Owusu in his capacity as a Deputy Speaker of Parliament to mind his utterances please .
I re-applied after my National Service

I am very disappointed that a WHOLE deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Appointments committee, would wade into this embarrassing development by Ghanaian Lawmakers in a manner that makes a COMPLETE ASS of himself and all who voted for him to be an MP, and all Ghanaians for that matter.
If a SENIOR LAWMAKER in Ghana can talk SO STUPIDLY, then what are we in for, Ghanaians?
It is very sad that Mr. Osei Wusu does not see the connection of this saga to Parliament. These CROOKS were carrying Diplomatic Passports because they are Parliamentarians.
The British High Commissioner is using this background of abuse of the privileges the British High Commission had extended to Parliamentarians to SERVE NOTICE that the British Embassy might not in the future honor PRIVILEGES heretofore extended to Parliamentarians seeking Visas to the UK if such abuse is not curbed.
The High Commissioner wrote to the Speaker of Parliament and copied a handful of Top government officials who made the CONTENTS of the Letter Public for ALL the RIGHT REASONS: to expose the CROOKS in Parliament.
For the sake of clarity of thought to the Honorable Deputy Speaker, ANY and ALL ISSUES involving Passports, Diplomatic or otherwise, are National and NOT Private Issues.
Why CONTRADICT the Speaker who has taken a DIM view of this?
Is it because the CROOKS are all from his side of town where such things are considered normal?
Well, the Speaker, Mike Oquaye, is from the 'OTHER SIDE' of town where such conduct is frowned upon.

@Yaa Nkosuo: So was your father mentioned on as being a visa fraudster? Why did you choose to overstay?
I am not saying the British should not enforce their laws, but the Commissioner could have just written to the Parliament to deal with it diplomatically . The reason is there are established Protocols and courtesies that benefit both countries, so the Commissioner erred by making this public.

Does he not know the number of his compatriots who are being questioned every day about the legalities of their presence here in Ghana. You are all missing the point. If Jon Benjamin's children are coming to visit Ghana, they will easily do so through the diplomatic benefits that associated to their father's office. The MPs by their office qualify to obtain visas for their families for purposes encoded in the diplomatic arrangement that exists between the two countries. So the MPs did not commit any fraud in securing the visas. The problem here is the over stay which the Commissioner could have written to the MPs and copied the Parliament.

It is not sooo difficult to understand this: when a person returns from a travel, he does not go to the embassy to tell them 'Hey, I'm back'. So whether the person returns or not, the embassy will not know.
However, on the other side, since they record every person that entered and left and on which date, the UK knows EXACTLY who entered and left, and who entered BUT did not leave.
I tell you this story: in August 1981, I was held at the British port of Folkstone, because I had previously ovestayed just 2 days.
I was very very surprised, when the immigration officer mentioned SIX people from my own extended family, who had previously visited my uncle but did not fly back to Ghana. The officer wanted to know if I knew them all.
What was strange was that some of them had been there 15 years before my case.
In short nobody in Ghana can do Jon Benjamin 'teeh' and noone in Ghana can overturn what the British gov't has decided.

Sometimes people in Ghana say things that has me scratching my head in disbelief! People in Ghana typically think of themselves as smarter than anybody else. They believe they can talk themselves out of every crazy situation they create for themselves. I sei Owusu should know, if he doesn't already, that the British High Commissioner and his Consular Officers have a job to do. Unlike the typical third world politician or civil servant, these diplomats from the first world take their responsibilities very seriously. A Ghanaian MP or Minister of State will do something which is not right or might even be criminal, all the while thinking that when they are exposed, they will "beg", or "apologize". The High Commissioner is doing his job. Osei Owusu is completely wrong in saying the diplomat lacks decency. Ghanaian politicians are the ones who lack propriety and decency. A very tacky lot!

Without attempting to deny the fact that the MPs broke UK Laws, I do sense a certain proclivity of this UK High Commissioner to Ghana to ridicule Ghana and her Citizens at the slightest opportunity in this issue as well.
During Mahama's reign, Jon Benjamin was all over the NDC Administration and daring to poke his nose into areas where many considered politically treacherous for a Diplomat of his caliber to tread unto. I quietly thought it might be just because of the ideological slant of the Mahama's Party, and the fact that almost every Western Government has always preferred and shown stronger bond with a UP/NLM progeny Administration at the expense of its opponents.
That is not to say, the NDC Administration didn't provide the material inviting criticisms. But Jon Benjamin seems to have a way of belittling those he finds fault with. I did not think, however, that he would subject the NPP Administration to the same treatment. So, in that sense, I'd say he brings a certain balance to the scene.
Nevertheless, I wish he could have consulted with our Parliamentary hierarchy in private to have the affected MPs properly dealt with. His action even goes beyond just shaming the MPs themselves, but reaches into shaming our Nation as a whole, as he claimed to have passed on the information of these MPs' misuse of their Diplomatic Passports to other countries' Embassies in Ghana.
As much as I feel grateful to anyone from outside that helps in any way to curb the corruption and misbehavior of our Political leaders, I take exception to how that person would use such an opportunity to wrap the whole Ghana in an international embarrassment.
And to Osei Owusu, I'd say: "Whenever you begin chewing on the hand of the Monkey in your soup, you better take a good look at your own". And it seems now that the following Akan proverb may also aptly apply: "Abaa yedebo Takyi no, yedebo Baah"...literally translating as "The stick that was used to whip Takyi, would be used to whip Baah".
This brings to mind the need for us to drop the old-time bitter partisanship between the CPP or Nkrumahists and UP/NLM or Busia-Danquah-Dombo sects that seems to have continued to today in shaping how we do our Politics, including how we solicit for foreign favors among Nations.
No matter how better liked a Party may think it is by our 'Foreign Partners', the bottom line always exists that they would want us to remember they are our superiors. And that, to me, is most demoralizing, and should keep us closer to our own, even if we are in an intense political competition with those local political entities.
Let any Government of ours display the deepest warmth with, say, the British. If we were ever to be in any confrontation with the Americans, for example, that needs the backing of other Nations, the British would never stand by us but support the Americans. So, a Party may enjoy the support of any of these Foreign entities against a local rival. But on the International scene, the game tends to be very different. We would not be lucky to have these on our side all the time...not even much of the time, depending on who we may be up against. These Foreign entities have rankings for their alliances with other Nations. And they would always be swayed to where they cherish their relationship more, not necessarily who is right.
We should look at our International Trade opportunities, where Markets are opened to us, for example, and what Business entities control the Market prices of our products we sell abroad. Do we enjoy fair Trade everywhere? A word to the wise is enough.

Ghanaians are weak minded people. Do you know what the westerners are doing to us. They have succeeded in destroying and imposing Their culture on you. They use every means to economically rip you off. Somebody is trying get into their country and even do dirty jobs just earn some pounds for a living and you shallow minded people are happy that he is caught. No wonder we always accuse Nigerians for trying to get their money back from the west. We always reject what is coming in but support what is going out. Some people are successful and others are poor because of different levels of stupidity. Anybody that corrupt the homeland Ghana must be chased. Those that help the people of Ghana must be rewarded. Listen carefully, Sadam and others were not killed for the reason the gave you. Every race or country has an agenda. Only africa and the black race has no agenda. Don't be naive.

This thieving MP lost his mind. Am an NPP but this idiot lost decency when he took bribe. Regardless of whatever investigation took place, I now firmly believe that this idiot is corrupt. I live overseas and know what MPs do, charging innocent Ghanaians and fronting as family members to secure visas. Ghanaians tell their stories here in the States and UK. So he should fucking shut up if he has lost his sanity. A diplomat is a human being. Jon Benjamin is doing his job. Osei Wusu might be a culprit himself so throws this shitty bunkum to defend the indefensible? Moron
