What will this achieve, when we don't an enabling environment for the prosecution of reckless drivers in Ghana. First, we must create a seamless and effective legal system of penalizing errant drivers. Only then would traffic cameras work in Ghana. So, if I jump the lights and I am captured on camers, what would happen?

Only yesterday Ghanaweb reported 19 or so deaths in two separate accidents. What a bloodbath?
Anything to reduce this carnage is a step in the right direction. The roads in Ghana are filled with so many brain-dead drivers driving mechanically unsafe vehicles overloaded with people all heading to their early graves at full speed.
I'd say excellent news to traffic cameras as I recently lost a relation in one such accident in Ghana.

Discourage dangerous driving, excessive speeding, detect vehicles that shouldn't be on the roads for whatever reason..and HOPEFULLY reduce the police corruption of taking bribes and allowing un-roadworthy and dangerously overloaded vehicles to carry on.
Most road accidents and deaths can be traced to human or mechanical error..including the MTU police.

Bullocks. This is another instance of sub-Saharan Africa elite reasoning in putting the cart in front of the horse.
It is not the lack of laws, policemen or the lack of vast road infra-structure that is the problem here. Not to speak of adding road cameras.
The primary problem is the attitude/behaviour of the Ghanaian, the Ghanaian driver, pedestrian, policeman, DVLA official, courts, public officials all contribute to the road accidents mayhem in Ghana.
Honestly if you ask me my opinion our mentality as Ghanaians at this point does note bode well for us to own or drive cars. The idea/concept of driving a car safely is alien to our driving culture, the car is alien to our thinking and hence when we get our hands on one, we easily forget that a car can be a weapon of mass destruction.
I might be accussed of sounding negative, but truth of the matter is (in my opinion) we are yet to understand what is safe driving, safe road traffic behaviour, safe pedastrian behaviour, legal and stringent road traffic infraction enforcement/punishment etc. It is only when we understand these simple and costless issues, that we should buy cars/drive on the road, and then add costly road traffic lights as extra safety precaution/enhancers.
Let us be wise and learn from our failures in other domains of Ghanaian life, imported foreign technology cannot and will not change our bad Ghanaian attitude/behaviours. Only a change in our attitude for the better in the first instance, can be enhanced later by imported and costly foreign technology.

What Ghana really have to do is construct dual carriage roads across the entire country. That's what will help curb the senseless road accidents that have claimed innocent lives. It's about time we found time to plan for safety on our highways. Ghana's road infrastructure needs lots of planning and upgrade; we can't sit down thinking everything would be okay. And also Ghanaians should wholeheartedly embrace H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo's free SHS program in order that we'd have literate drivers. A country full of semi-literates can't have safe drivers. The DVLA should be able to issue drivers licences to literate drivers, instead of allowing people to acquire their licences through bribery. Traffic cameras are okay, but it won't help so much when drivers can't even read and understand road signs or regulations.

The introduction of dedicated traffic cameras is a splendid concept but not for a country like ghana where street light metal cables and bulbs can be stolen in broad daylight. Posing as electricians from the electricity corporation, these guys were able to operate in broad daylight in the presence of both motorists and passersby including police patrol teams. Boldly displaying their wizardry, the cable thieves outwitted everyone and bolted with their booty. This happened on one of the highways in the nation's capital, Accra. These smooth criminals will be glad to hear the news of the installations of the dedicated traffic cameras on our roads. I am sure they've started working on their strategy to make the whole exercise, a joke. Africa is not europe where people think about better things in life than stealing cables. Almost all the cables and bulbs are stolen from our street lights in the nation's capital. Our governments are not wrong to initiate such laudable moves but when they themselves are thieves, what do you expect the hungry flat foot hustlers to do ? We must all change our mentality in order to join the highly advanced countries. Traffic accidents are caused by drunk drivers, rickety vehicles, deplorable roads, police corruption, lack of traffic education and many more factors which leads to lawlessness. Ghana police service are already introduced to speed lasers but not one driver is prosecuted since its introduction. Few coins is enough to set overspeeding drivers free. If the police refuse to take the bribe, the judge will take it so bribery and corruption is quite competitive between these two groups. With such malpractices by people who are to ensure safety on our roads, how can we prevent accidents on our roads ? The cameras can capture the scenes but the people to punish the offenders are the same police and the judges who are unfortunately corrupt so how helpful can the cameras be to the country ?
