I wept for joy when I read the message from the President asking Ghanaians to protect the Environment during his 6th March 2017 speech. This ist the moment I have been waiting for a long time, that politicians identify this problem and personally involve themselves in solving it.
I am a Forest Research Scientist based in Germany. In 1995, I initiated a Tree Planting Project „Planting of Trees on Ghanaian School compounds“ with 4 Schools in the Central Region but now increased to 75, with school children planting beautiful trees on their School compounds. Solar lamps as incentive have been introduced into the project. A child gets a free solar lamp when he/she plants 4 trees and caters for them for 6 Months. Since every child is eager to receive a solar lamp, thousands of trees are being planted. A modern tree nursery has just been completed in September 2016 where 8000 tree seedlings have already been nursed and distributed to the Project Schools. The project is sustainable since it is being guided by environmental education.
I cannot narrate all problems encounted so far but these include: Government institututions hindering my work instead of supporting me (For instance I have to pay full duty on the solar lamps I brought in 2008 and 2016 for the project because they are not educational material); ECG cutting down some of the trees without compensation, using the forests created on the school compounds as toilet- and wee smoking grounds etc.
Infact, any time I wanted to give up, I receive support and encouragement especially from German schools which partner some of the Project schools in Ghana and donors to continue the project. I therefore hope that the President’s concern on the environment is going to give an impetus to my project. Then the children must know why they are planting the trees and defend them when some one wants to take or destroy them and handle accordingly in their future positions. This can only be realised when sustainable tree planting is combined with environmental education. Our ancestors who most of them did not receive formal education were the best ecologists. They created forest cemetries around their Settlements which provided Micro climate and maintained them by putting fear into the children not to disturb the peace of the dead. Now we the educated ones are destroying the environment out of greed. Since the fear used in protecting the Environment is no more valid, environmental education should explain to the children why they have to protect the environment, for intance by planting trees.
I am therefore appealing to the responsible Authotities to make tree planting and Environmental Education compulsory in Schools. This I nearly succeeded in 2005 when the then Education Minister accepted to implement my tree planting idea in Schools but this was nipped in the bud when he was removed to the Finance Ministry. Due to lack of support in Ghana, I now operate in only 75 Schools with thousands of trees already planted. You can however imagine the number of trees planted if even 1000 out of about 9000 Basic Schools had been involved since 2005.
