Singapore and Israel have similar type systems. Improve the NSS and not just scrap it due to some short sited view.

I have been saying this for many years -- I wasted a year of my life doing National service because I spent my time doing nothing. I actually thought I wasted government money, albeit I was not paid much, but multiply it by the many graduates and you will see it is a complete drain on government.
Instead the government should re-invest the money into the universities themselves (state of the art facilities, top notch lecturers etc.) so we get top notch graduates who can invent and be creative. We are producing mediocre/weak graduates who are not employable. If you have a strong graduate it should not be difficult for them to find jobs or create jobs themselves.
Busia's idea of the National Service Scheme to help instill patriotism and discipline in the youth of the country, has outlived its usefulness, we know it has not achieved the original intent.

IMANI'S advise is a stupid advise. All sound thinking individuals agree that the National Service Scheme as it and given our financial status will need some amendments and modifications. (1) its should be made voluntary
(2) those who can't do it should be charged say (350 x 12) current pay for a year.
There are many of those who will prefer paying GHC 4200 than going to serve. By this revenue generated can make the scheme sustainable. Then a few modifications can be made. For instance disadvantaged district assemblies in 3 northern regions can put in request for specific number of nss personnel placement in teaching, extension office etc

Araba, how does the government recover money put into public universities by paying more money to students to do national service, especially when the positions they are assigned to may not be needed, we know that as it is government is bloated? The original intent of the scheme was to make us patriotic which has not been achieved, considering all the corruption in the system. It was not about paying fees or not, unless that was revised along the way.

We do not have that in place and cannot afford to keep students hanging around doing nothing post-completion of their studies.
Let's put our thinking caps on and find solutions for our problems because the problem is now in our courts now. The older generation didn't have all these problems when they were younger.
Think seriously about it.

When tertiary education was free, and Kutu thought it was fair for graduates who had received free university education had to be made to contribute their quota to nation building by doing a one compulsory national service and be paid a stipend for doing so. These days, tertiary education is no longer free. Either you paid for your education or you take a repayable loan to fund your education. What is the need for the national service then?

I agree with you. It must be scapped. After all, the nation is not benefiting as it should. Why will you send a Bcom student to the classroom and said an education student who even go through teaching practice as part of his/her studies to the bank etc. Some officials in the gov't sector also do not engage personnels in the day-to-day activities and personnels sit in the office whatsapping or Fcbking everyday for 1 good year. Or probly send them to go and buy them lunch etc. The positive results of national seevice will be like 20% on the state and that's waste of revenue in paying personnels. There are sooo sooo many examples to be given. They can do a research and come out with findings. That's whn they will knw dng service is useless and a waste of time.

Exactly. Some of my mates were posted to go and teach some funny subjects they had no idea about. Imagine an accounting graduate being asked to teach RME in some village school. How do they expect the children to perform in their exams? Some actually sit in the offices doing nothing the whole day, for weeks on end. The only work they do is that of being messengers in the office, being sent to run little errands and buy food for the permanent staff. It is honestly a waste of their time because very few students actually gain relevant experience for their chosen jobs. It's either they scrap it or revamp the whole scheme
