The lack of political will to confront the increasing conflict between the fulani herdsmen and our indigenous farmers only goes to buttress the view that most politicians and chiefs are behind the ownership of these cattle in Ghana. Why do we allow unbridled grazing to the peril our farmers lives.? The 2 dominant political parties have woefully failed to address this issue even though the NDC, in 2012 had promised to deal with it; whilst Nana Addo made a verbal statement to curb the menace but has not been inked in the NPP 2016 manifesto. Without having to understudy the Burkina Faso model, Ghana can fashion out its own policy that can lead to a harmonious cohabitation between the 2 factions. We need to develop a symbiotic relationship between the fulani and the farmer that can mutually benefit them. In this direction, we should consider either earmarking specific areas for cattle breeding where there would be no crop cultivation, or develop land banks that will schedule rotation of animal farming and crop cultivation. This will be beneficial to both parties since the cattle breeding on a confined area adjoining to the crop farm such as rice , will fertilise the land with the cattles manure thereby reducing the farmers cost. The cattle herders will inturn benefit from the rice straw which is feed for the animals. All that is needed, is to acquire a baling machine to harvest the straw for storage. The latent advantage in this scenario is for government to facilitate the establishment of a dairy processing plant in these selected enclaves to be an off taker of the milk that would be produced by the cattle breeders to help them offset their feeding cost. This idea, if properly fine tuned, could be more beneficial than the Burkina Faso module.
