Do you understand the AU? What is it? Tell me what the AU is all about? The AU is just a paper organization and that is it. It is irrelevant.

Mahama is urging other African nationals to come to Ghana without visa due to AU and Ecowas. Now, how many African leaders are making that sweeping statement and do you understand its meaning and its impact on Ghana? I hope you do else, just think about the dangers it poses on us.

I am not surprised that colonized minds would reject one of the most significant aspects of the PanAfrican revolution, while completely accepting, embracing, and endorcing holidays that are of no significance to Africa's development.

There are too many Public Holidays in Ghana.I personally don't see the reason why we grant Monday as a Public Holiday when a Holiday falls on saturday or Sunday.

History

On 15 April 1958, in Accra, Ghana, African leaders and political activists gathered at the first Conference of Independent African States. In attendance were representatives of the governments of Egypt (then a constituent part of the United Arab Republic), Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon. This conference was significant in that it represented the first Pan-African conference to be held on African soil.[1]

The Conference called for the founding of African Freedom Day, a day to “mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the People of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.”

Five years later, after the First Conference of Independent African States in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, another historic meeting occurred. On 25 May 1963, leaders of thirty-two independent African states met to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU). By then more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence, mostly from imperial European states. At this meeting, the date of Africa Freedom Day was changed from 15 April to 25 May, and Africa Freedom Day was declared African Liberation Day (ALD).

I have been adviocatiNg the scrapping of this AU holidays from Ghanaian calendar. It is useless. Ghana has too many useless holidays and this AU holiday is one of them. What purpose is it for our nation development. Ghanaians love staying at home instead of working. There is a lot to be done to lift this nation from where we are and instead of going to work, we choose to stay home. Who is going to build our nation for us. The amount of man hours lost in Ghana through these useless holidays is imaginable and not until we sit up as a nation to work hard, there will be no progress for us. I therefore I agree in toto with Dr. Nduom that this holidays should be scrapped. I will also recommend to any forward looking and progressive subsequent go went to scrap it, it is useless and unnecessary.

The AU even if presently toothless is forever serving as a reminder that we belong together as oppressed people rising from the ashes. What we are doing with European holidays fostered on us? We cannot wipe our history. I believe in Nkrumaism and for this call to be coming from one of us is simply a blow below the belt. Besides employers/employees have leave periods to rest and restore the body. It has been a struggle to get this day recognized. Does he not want to be President at all sometime? Dr Nduom is aiming the axe at the only celebration which is ours which crosses all party lines apart from Dr Nkrumah's birthday and Farmers Day. Religious holidays are trusted on us, but we need holidays to rest and for those who can make room come together to socialize. Our day offs does not provide such avenues. The debate will be lively is his axe is aimed at the holidays you mentioned which are FAITH HOLIDAYS (bringing us closer to God). What does a Christian do on
Eid Holiday and vice versa what does a Muslim do on Easter Monday? Rest and reflect on life's journey. In any case the vote will still be in favour of the holidays 95:5. I have always loved to hear Dr Nduom. He thrashed both late President Atta Mills and Nana at the debate just preceding the 2008 general elections.
