Renewable energy is BEST, however that is not the answer in the short run. It's all well and good screaming for using renewable energy sources. The fact of the matter is on the industrial scale using renewable is very expensive and inefficient. The technology is in transition and on the industrial level most of the technology we see now despite being expensive, would be obsolete in a few years. In many places where renewable is touted as success what we see is rather heavy governmental subsidies - Ghana can't afford subsidising these inefficient technologies. Unfortunately this is precisely what we are twisting the governments arm to do - through negotiating unfavorable and unrealistic Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) which would see the government being short changed in the medium to long run. The fact of the matter is many major renewable power companies all over have gone bankrupt or are being propped up by huge governmental grants and subsidies.
A better approach perhaps would be adopt "all of energy mix" strategy, but on the renewable front focus on smaller home/municipal systems in the short run as the technology develops. I am inclined to think that the guarantees within the PPA's being negotiated now are going to be found to be unrealistically expensive to GH soon. They would have adverse financial implications.
