MPs need better security – Bagbin

Majority leader Alban Bagbin is calling for tighter security for Ghana’s lawmakers.

This follows the gruesome murder of the late MP for Abuakwa North constituency, Joseph Boakye Dankwa-Adu, at his Shiashie residence as well as the robbery of MP for Okere, Dan Kwaku Botwe.

Mr Bagbin, during sitting on Tuesday May 17, said the security of MPs was dear to the hearts of the leaders of the house.

"We have put up a comprehensive report for the attention of the security agencies to try as much as possible to protect MPs because we have seen that MPs are now a security concern,” the veteran legislator said.

“I heard that the Police Service has taken it seriously and they will come out with an answer as to whether MPs will be given police personnel to protect them or some measures will be put [in place] to secure their residences."

The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, also expressed concern about the rampant attacks on the lawmakers, describing the trend as worrying.

He welcomed the MPs back to the House from their recess.
