Look, about 90 percent of our parliamentarians are 1st degree holders and about 50 percent of that number hold Masters degree yet what do we see. Dubious and crooked deals are gloriously approved by this same house. Is Mahama not a 1st degree holder and what has been his performance. The constitution has defined the requirement for MPs. The only additional should be the ability to read, speak and understand English Language to a level expected of an MP, bearing in mind the nature of the work. This is because English Language is used to conduct business in the house. The requirement for a first degree as minimum entry is unnecessary. Former British Prime Minister, John Major was not a graduate but entered parliament and became Finance and Foreign Ministers and finally Prime Minister. He would have been disqualified from entering Parliament had OB Amoah's minimum requirement was in force. A first degree is not necessarily a sign of ability to be an effective MP

In fact I do not blame this OB Amoah at all because if his constituents were wise, they would not have voted for such an obtuse, selfish and ungrateful person.

OB Amoah who probably considers himself to be an educated man is not at this stage capable of even distinguishing the difference between an educated person and a wise person. If education alone had any benefit, this country would have advanced much more than where we now find ourselves.

On the other hand, if we had just a few wise people in this country - even if not formally educated, we would surely have gone places instead of the mess that we find ourselves under the thumb of extremely stupid educated people.

Look at engineers, they are not even visible and that reflects in the unemployment of the youth. My MP spoke maybe three times on the floor all the 12 years he was MP. But because he has money to buy the delegates, he won all the primaries he participated in. How come electorates do not subject parliamentary candidates to debate each other before elections? In Ghana today, if you have the most money to bribe the delegates, you will win. If you happen to be with NPP and you use money to win Ashanti Region, you become an MP. If you happen to be in the Volta Region and you are NDC, you will become MP.

With all due respect, Hon. Amoah ought to rethink his arbitrary benchmark of a university degree as minimum criterion to be in Ghana's parliament. There is presumption that unlike Ghanaians who are not university graduates, those with university education have qualities for success in parliament. Given that overwhelming majority of current parliamentarians hold university degrees, the Ghanaian legislative body should have been massively successful already, thus rendering Hon. Amoah’s argument moot. Such presumptions about the efficacy of university degrees ought to characterize the work of the executive body as well, as most of the ministers and presidential staff are university Graduates.
With the dominance of Univ. degree holders in both the executive and legislature, and yet Ghana’s quagmire, it is fair to question whether the universities are producing graduates with leadership qualities. Hon Amoah’s precipitous pronouncement should prompt legitimate questions about his own critical thinking. With his august position, he ought to be circumspect, since his pronouncement devalues the contributions of tens of millions of Ghanaians who work just as hard and who are just as diligent as any university product or any parliamentarian. Assuming that Hon Amoah is a university graduate who could have prompted such obtuse pronouncement?
As an MP, does Hon Amoah rely on the advice of only university graduates in his constituency? Does he not think that any one, graduate or non graduate, could do the job he has been elected to do? If Hon Amoah could so cavalierly dismisses the interest of most of his constituency, since they are non-graduates, I shudder to think about the extent to which he can represent them!
Are we going to segregate Ghana based on education? Those with University education get a pass for eligibility into parliament. The rest can watch from the window.
Hon Amoah has just demonstrated why Ghana is in such a moral crass. He has become the face of extreme callousness in the society. Translate his pronouncement in the equivalences of class, religion, and ethnicity, and it ceases to be mere conjecture. How about only rich people can be in parliament; how about only Moslems or Christians can be in parliament; how about only southerners can be in parliament; how about only short people can be in parliament; how about only dark skin Ghanaians can be in parliament. In deliberately going for the Jocular, I wish to show the absurdity and dangerousness of Hon Amoah’s proposition.
It is not the carelessness of the pronouncement that gauds me on; it is not the arrogance that irks me. It is the dismissive nature of the statement which alarms me. Hon Amoah wants us to believe that qualities of integrity, patience, leadership, compassion, community responsibility, faith, honest, camaraderie, team work, sensitivity, and on and on, which are universal elements for any high office cannot be acquired by those without university degrees. Does he seriously think only university graduates can be honest, compassionate, etc?
The job of representing others ought to come with sensitivity to the needs and interest of other. Hon Amoah is in parliament primarily to serve his constituency. He’s not there to surround himself with people with University degrees. If he wants be with degree holders, he should go the universities where he would spend his time with people who have university degrees or who are aspiring to acquire university degrees. Ghana’s parliament must be a macrocosm of Ghana’s diverse society.

Kutu Acheampong, Afrifa and J.J Rawlings were non-degree holders (some of them did not even have the A Level Certificate) but did better in government than Professor Atta-Mills and John Mahama who were/are degree holders.

I find this suggestion very discriminatory and an attempt to create a class society. How many of our graduates measure up to the quality of some of our uneducated as well as very lowly educated citizens?

What we as a people should be singing about is the creation of a Ghanaian society which is NATIONALISTIC and who will alwyas want the "whiteman" to sanction whatever we do.

We want people in parliament who will understand how and to in act laws that will relate our so called educated people to the bulk of the population which is not very educated.

After almost 60 years of independence, we have not understood the need for nationalism and self sacrifice.

It must be emphasized that its Not how someone could express himself in the English language but the Sense or Common Sense behind the idea to legislate an issue,is the most important thing we should look for.Equally ,a lot of Educated people do not Speak in the House.That is one reason why we find ourselves where we are.Have respect for Common Sense.One do not need any Academic

What Ghana needs to move forward is a leader with a Vision,and a well Trained Skilled Workforce(not necessarily with Uni degrees)which is Sustainable to Economic Growth. Sch is good,but not in a meaningless retrogressive manner OB Amoah want to apply Schooling. "Travel and See" is an inscription on a house in Ghana.No wonder our youth cannot Stand well Trained Military Standards b'cos they think Uni Degree is enough to be called a Military Officer/Soldier.

In other words, he is saying the degree holders should be the ruling class in Ghana. Would he also advocate for voters to be degree holders too? If not, why not? We the people will not sit down for Ghana to be segregated by education. After all, these so-called graduates have proved themselves incompetent in many areas of governance, including the presidency. Why do we need more of them to muddy the waters even more? They may be educated but they aren't wise.
