It is our governments who have to fight these illegal galamsey. This can be done by creating the right atmosphere for the establishment of businesses.

The nana does not own lands, The lands belong to families and it is not possible for him to sell any family's land to any person. Some family heads may do so but the king cannot strictly speaking do much about it. The DCE, the assembly and the police have to stop that.

How can anybody engage in multiple sale of land without fear of going to prison for a long time? Chiefs in Ghana engage in multiple sale of land because the Ghanaian legal system is the most corrupt in the world. If a chief defrauds a land buyer, can the police take action and arrest the fraudster? Everybody knows that is not going to happen. In a scenario like this, the first thing that the police will do is to demand bribe from the victim of fraud. Let's assume that the greedy chief is arrested and arraigned before a competent court. Will there be a trial? I believe at that point the judge will correct bribe from the defendant in which case the case is thrown out of court. If the culprit is not punished how can we have deterrence? When chiefs commit crimes with impunity, it signals to everybody to engage in similar acts. In Ghana wrong doers operate with impunity because the country is a backward third world country where lawlessness prevails.

I agree that there is much environmental degradation going on in many parts of Ghana, especially Abuakwa and Konongo but there is little the chiefs can do about it. Why? As a lawyer, you know that the traditional chiefs in Ghana can have influence and respect but not the power to enforce the laws. There are no jobs for the people. It is now buy and sell. Promotion for the development of local industries have stunted in growth. So, instead of armed robbery, some chose galamsey for their daily bread.
Some politicians are actively involved in the galamsey business and opinion leaders and traditional rulers who oppose such developments are seen as against depending on which party is in power. I was sad when I visited my dear ABUSCO and found out the damage that has been done to the land. The headmaster plainly explained to me there is nothing he can do because there are some powers involved. How can Chinese be doing such businesses in Ghana? Can any Ghanaian be engaged in Galamsey in China? What is even more serious is that they are even armed with high powered riffles. Ghanaians cannot even do that. The rot is really from the top. There was near pandemonium and confusion at the Annual Global African Investment Forum held in Westminster ,Central London after a heated exchange between Ghana’s President John Mahama and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo degenerated into open insults .This was due to General Obasanjo openly accusing the Ghanaian president and his government of blackmailing and collecting bribes from Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, buying numerous properties in Nigeria and South Africa and financially contributing 12 million dollars to Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign last year . This infuriated President Mahama who lost his temper and pointing his finger , called General Obasanjo an ” idiot” and a “stupid buffoon” .It took other ministers present as well as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to calm tempers and usher President Mahama to a nearby room . The British Justice Minister recently announced a move to free up prison places and in accordance with an age old Commonwealth Prisoner Exchange Treaty, the Ghanaian President is seeking to utilise this opportunity to secure the release of his government’s most expensive prisoner. It is not known whether this discussion by the President, with his high commissioner will cover all Ghanaians who have been caught flouting the UK laws, and languishing in UK jails.

It may be recalled that in September 2014, Nayeli Ametefe was arrested at the Heathrow airport by customs officers, in a daring attempt to smuggle 12 kilos of cocaine in her hand luggage. News surfaced about the access she enjoyed including official security escorts through VVIP lounge at the Ghanaian international airport including her fateful British airways Accra – London bound flight.

Miss Hannah Tetteh, the Ghana’s foreign minister made frenetic efforts to debunk the reported version of eye witnesses. This was followed by an uncharacteristic regular prison visits from Mr Victor Smith, the high commissioner himself, and a high profile team from the Ghana mission to Nayeli, where she was held on prison remand, awaiting trial, and sentencing. On 6th January, 2015, Nayeli made her first appearance in court, during which she pleaded guilty, followed with sentencing via a video link two weeks later.

During the hearing, a Ghanaian delegation was present in a peculiar mix of colours confirmed to be that of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). Nayeli Ametefe was jailed for a token 8 years and 4 months at the Isleworth Crown Court through a plea bargain. During confiscation proceedings, 6 months later, in line with the British justice system, it was surprisingly reported from the Isleworth Crown Court that the Crown Prosecution Service made no appearance, as they usually would, to push for a confiscation of property acquired by any such culprit through illegally acquired wealth. Nayeli was therefore spared all her stock of illegal wealth which is the root cause of the strained diplomatic relations.

Complicities and accomplices, aiders and abettors to the commission of the offence perpetrated by Nayeli were all let-off-the-hook, some of them, on the basis of nolle prosequi, occasioned by non-court attendance by the Ghana Attorney General Department.

According to a source at the Ghanaian presidency Miss Nayeli Ametefe who played a crucial role in the 2012 campaign to elect President John Mahama and has been a high profile courier on behalf of the official of the NDC party and its financiers thereby underscoring her numerous diplomatic identities under which she evaded capture for some time.

The big question is whether such a highly connected operative dubbed Cleopatra of the drug world with complex links within the ruling party in Ghana will see the murky walls of harsh prison environments in Ghana especially coming directly from the echelons of power?

Bravo nana. But the trouble starts from you the chiefs. The land commission does not sell land. The national house of chiefs must be able to stop the practice by streamlining the land sale process. The difference between stool land and family land must be well defined and their acquisition process clearly set out for the public and the land commission. The problem certainly tarnishes the image of the chieftaincy institution and the country. It also allows some unscrupulous lawyers and clerks to dip deep into corruption.
