The huge problem of overcrowded remand prisoners, waiting years for their day in court needs urgent reform of bail laws and their application. Look at best practice around the world.
If the accused is low risk due to their age, lack of previous criminal history, and unlikely to re-offend on bail, then judges should always grant bail, even if they have no sureties.
The use of ankle GPS trackers could be used as a condition of release on accused at medium risk of absconding.
Bail should be granted to all petty crimes such as possession of small quantities of illicit drugs or theft without violence.
Compassion is needed. Also 'on the spot fines' should be introduced for all petty crimes so their is no need for court or remand. These cases only go to court if the accused wants to challenge the on-the spot fine.
These reforms would greatly improve justice in Ghana.
