Sure there's an economic mess, but all the banks have seen fo far is a slight slowing down in the rate of increase in profits. The writer is clueless.

Surely I agree with you. any Tom Dick and Harry who graduates wants to be a news paper reporter. Only in Ghana journalism that calls 10% increase a marginal. They should investigate the P&L notes and see where the losses are coming from. Why have others made profits whilst others are making losses? is it purely economic mess of managerial incompetence and excessive executive pay in the banks? Or they hedged against the Ghana Cedi and lost when the Cedi made over 22% recovery in two weeks?

In industrialized nations it has been banking and financial institutions which bring about national economic hardships to people and nation but in Ghana knuckleheads try to blame government policies for mismanagement at our banks why? The simple truth is that banks in Ghana are sorely mismanaged; they depend on deposits from the very rich few for day to day operations while they charge loan seekers and borrowers unseemly interest rates on loans.
So while banks and financial institutions in industrialized nations make money from everyone and anything to do with money, from credit cards through checking accounts and reserved credits to mortgage loans, in Ghana banks tend to narrow the pool of viable customer base. Do we know of anyone in Ghana that can move a house or office building? So why do banks and financial institutions in Ghana engage in short durations, mostly a year or less, to finance mortgages? How would the practice help majority middle class in Ghana or with inroad to a larger share of the market?
Banks are not doing so hot in Ghana because they fail to work with merchants and telecom providers to use credit card system; they would rather nickel and dime the poor to death on debit card transaction charges. None of the banks in Ghana are savvy enough to understand banking innovations; they would rather fall for pay-as-you-go payment system because they're afraid to take risks or give Ghanaians with years of work service, private or public, loan opportunities to become loyal customers.

A lot of times some companies forget their most important off-the-balance sheet asset: THE CUSTOMER.
