About a decade ago, American medical research scientists recognized the need to quickly bring to the hospital bedside, the fruits of scientific research. Thus was born a new field called "Translational Medicine" (TM), (basically meaning translating theories into practice).
TM established methods and procedures for transforming research findings into actual therapies.
The same concept can be extended to Agricultural research in Ghana.
Establish Translational Agricultural departments in the varsities and research institutes. Their sole objectives would be to outline the steps that can be taken to convert research findings into real-world applications.
Such a department can have a pilot plant wing, where prototypes would be developed as models for large-scale production and commercialization.

Translational science
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Translational science is a multidisciplinary form of science that bridges the recalcitrant gaps that sometimes exist between fundamental science and applied science, necessitating something in between to translate knowledge into applications.
The term is most often used in the health sciences and refers to the translation of bench science, conducted only in a lab, to bedside clinical practice or dissemination to population-based community interventions.
In U.S., the National Institutes of Health have implemented a major national initiative to leverage existing academic health center infrastructure through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) was established on December 23, 2011.
The industry and academic interactions to promote translational science initiatives has been carried out by various global centres such as European Commission, Glaxo Smithkline and Novartis institute for Biomedical Research in European Union, the University of California, Davis in the U.S., the translational research cells at National Institute of Virology, National Institute of Nutrition under Indian Council of Medical Research and Biotech Consortium India Limited in India.

What is Translational Research?
Translational Research (a.k.a. translational science) is a way of conducting scientific research to make the results of research applicable to the population being studied. It is used to translate research findings more quickly into medical practice for the purposes of diagnosing, preventing and treating medical conditions.
As an example, the Translational Research Working Group (TRWG) defines Translational Research for the National Cancer Institute as follows:
“Translational research transforms scientific discoveries arising from laboratory, clinical, or population studies into clinical applications to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality.”
The approach quickens the transition from researcher to physician by improving multidisciplinary collaboration and communication. There are typically four types or steps of Translational Research.
1
Type 1
Applies new knowledge generated in the laboratory to new methods that can be tested on humans.
2
Type 2
Takes the results of the above human studies and refines them for use in daily clinical practice.
3
Type 3
Takes these practices beyond the academic health clinic and into the community.
4
Type 4
Evaluates the outcomes from the above steps and provides feedback.
