Yes thank you for organising such an event as Ghana has been a good construction country long ago, we have to go back to those days of construction achievements.

Take it or not. The construction industry is a very high risk industry. The state of health and safety on construction sites in Ghana is very bad. In almost all construction sites, workers are exposed to hazards and it appears no one really cares. Injuries and accidents are common on work sites. However, compensation for injury is often at the discretion of the contractor although collective bargaining agreements between Labor unions and employers prescribe obligations for the contractor in the event of injury to a worker. The primary reasons for this problems are lack of strong institutional framework for governing construction activities and poor enforcement of health and safety policies and procedures.
Also, Ghanaian society does not place a high premium on health and safety of construction workers on site. If you want to award construction industries in the country for making good strides, that is a good one but do consider how well these companies implement health safety in their projects. It would be very disappointing to refuse to factor in safety in any attempt to motivate the construction industry in Ghana.

The file photo used in this article is an indication of poor safety management not only in this particular construction project but also in several others. For example, the workers are exposed to the following hazards; working at height on a poor working platform, protruding rebar(risk of impalement),poor access to work areas, lack of barricates to prevent both workers and equipment from falling inside the deep excation, manual handling with risk of sprains and strains, exposure to extreme weather conditions, lack of personal protective equipment(PPE)...etc. As stated earlier in my previous comment, please do consider safety. Let's be aware that these workers are assets of the country. It would be morally wrong to use them in this way without caring about their welfare. Besides, it is a legal requirement of international health and safety laws that companies must carry out these obligations. What about the financials? the direct and the indirect costs? Let the goverment cease an opportunity to do something positive about the health and safety in Ghana. Thank you. +974 30046754
