I don't like correcting contributors'
grammatical mistakes. But my brother there is nothing wrong with the grammar you are referring to. The nation state is seen as making up of a multitude of people so it is always seen in the plural when referring to it's action, achievement/non achievement or activity. Hence you hear Ghana have won/lost to..... instead of Ghana has won/lost etc. For me if there is any problem with the writing, then it is the adjective "Notorious" which was used to describe the regular players in the starting line-up. It is not quite clear to me what is meant by that.

Both of you are right. There should not be arguments about this. Names of countries can be used in singular and or plural terms depending on the contexts upon which the idea is being expressed. So stop fighting boys.

KANAWU is right, the rest are wrong. This is not about British English or American English. It is about a singular noun or a plural noun. Ghana is used as a collective noun, which carries a singular verb, and therefore the plural verb "humble" should be a singular one,"humbles". I always lament about the extent to which the standard of journalism has fallen today in Ghana, and I believe it reflects the standard to which the general secondary level education has fallen, for in those days, secondary school was the level where people learned good grammar.Having been out of the country for fifteen years, I cannot say with certainty to what extent the tertiary institutions have rectified these lapses and weaknesses in the students they receive, but I know from what I read that the standard has woefully fallen drastically. What KANAWU said should not even have been a point of debate - the mistake is so glaring! God help us!

Manooo man! You made my night. "there was a swallow" and that is all what we want to hear.
How in the world a football forum turned into a grammatical error institution? Have you realized that because just couple of you started debating on a single correction, most of you followed suit and so deviated from the subject.
We have a whole lot to write about in terms of this match. Why did our defense allow those two goals? Dauda, should he be among our top three keepers? Looking at the way Boakyie Yiadom handles and distributing balls, shouldn't be paired with Gyan upfront instead of Jordan? The local players Coach Grant invited, looking at their performance, don't some of them deserve to be called again into the national team? Has Grant seen what he was looking for in these local players in order to include them or not? How about our midfielders, how do they do? All these and more questions are there for us to debate on.
In other words, why wasting time in correcting grammatical errors? Are we writing a thesis in here? Please let us to focus. In case we are not noticing results, Rwanda has trash Ethiopia 3.

I am yet to see those who claim the journalist who wrote this headline(Ghana humble Congo)is inefficient and wrong in his English and so must go back to school launch their wild outbursts against the author of this latest headline story. And I find it interesting this dichotomy between American English and British English. As somebody said, anybody with higher education know matter where he lives will not attack this journalists for being wrong. Mind you Goal.com journalists are seasoned in their profession with good editors. They sub-edit their articles very well before publication like the BBC, CNN, FOX or NBC because they know their reputation is at stake. What do you say EFO "KOFI"/KANAWU?

It's amusing how one could be so confident, and yet off the mark. "Ghana humble Congo" is absolutely correct. Schoolboy grammar would argue for an 's' to be added to 'humble', but strict English Usage prefers 'humble'. Same with a word like 'Management'. The Queen is likely to say, "Management of Buckingham Palace have...." and NOT "Management... has...". English is the language of England, remember. A good dictionary will help.
