The country needs more trained personnel in the trades like masonry, carpentry and mechanics. The country doesn't need what the universities are producing now. So far, none of our so-called educators has said a thing about this. All they think about is allowances.

The truth of the matter is population growth exceeds economic growth. S long as this disparity exists, so long will resources for the country be stretched.
The second critical thing is there are too many me too university graduates and students. They just enter and study not knowing if there will be jobs waiting for them in the fields they elect.
The third thing is the country abandoned strategic growth for "free market". Free market works in developed countries. For developing countries there should be focused attention as was doe in Nkrumah's days. There was incentive to go to KNUST or polytechnics not to mention teaching and medicine.
Another reason is nobody wants to dirty their hands. Everybody spends time plotting the next smart move euphemism for how to cheat my neighbour.

Professor, have you considered the attitude of your so-called Ghanaian graduate? They all want jobs in SSNIT, Banks and white colo offices. None wants to get their hands dirty working in farms, poultry or even gas stations. When they get their first job, they want to be the manager from day 1. Jobless graduates all carry iPads, spend 50 census a day buying phone and surfing units, and aspire for the latest cars. You are right, your own so-called "technology university produced graduates who can ever be employed by any serious technology industry. So, go to the ground and situate the problem in real perspective, Prof!

I have the solution. government should make a law for every church, private schools, all universities, all industries to acquired 20acres each of any farm of their choice as license to operate in Ghana. and I swear God by 5years time Ghana would be a better place for all of us. Ghana is spending so much in buildings than farms and that is a wrong path for us as a country. the next law for the cocoa sector to increase production is to make a law compelling every house to plant at least two cocoa trees in Ghana and in four years times Ghana would lead the world in cocoa production. This idea is for mr Bawa Daasey and remains my personal intellectual property. signed: by Bawa Daasey

The graduate unemployement menace is an issue which ought to be tackled holistically. Its not only the fault of academia, the industries itself doesnt exist. Besides tertiary education especially University is not meant to train people for specific markets only. it is also meant to creat an open minded populace who can use theories to solve human problems. By the way where did our dear Professeur got his stats from? Does it mean that no one single person had a job after graduating from the University? hmm I bet to differ! Sometimes these people over exergerate the stats which in turn cause panic in the system allowing graduates to accept any offer given them. However whatever the stats are unemployement situation can't be left untackled. We ought to creat more industries before integeration. if there is no industry how do we intend to integerate our people into the industry? Its a null idea I guess.

Now even PhD graduates are even struggling to find their feet on the job market. The truth is that the economy is not expanding at the rate at which graduates enter the system. The issue with quality of graduates in my opinion is not really the problem. Ghanaian graduates are able to compete favourable anywhere in the world and I can testify to that. Can the industries tell the universities the kind of skills they need that are currently unavailable? People talk about Technology and Technical education as if jobs are secured. I have a number of friends with engineering degrees who are quite good in their fields yet they are struggling. Nurses are struggling likewise Pharmacists. MBA graduates are not finding their feet either. Which programmes of study these days still have job prospects. We then come back to the issue of creating our own jobs, that certainly is an excellent and a more convenient solution for people to suggest. However we should know jobs are not created in vacuum. The existing successful industries are folding up because we don't support them. If I have an idea of coming up with a product that will sell and provide jobs, within the next week, the whole market is flooded with cheaper similar products from China and it becomes difficult for you to compete. Talk about electricity and other challenges. I think our governments should protect our local industries, provide incentives for young entrepreneurs to start their businesses and not to look uncaring and blaming and we should as a nation discuss the way forward devoid of political sentiments. Remember graduate unemployment is the biggest challenge of our time and we should all work to hold our leaders and ourselves accountable to solve.

Certainly, it cannot be just the curriculum. Would one say there are 200,000 openings but those institutions cannot find the 200,000 qualified applicants because the curriculum did not provide them with the essential knowledge and skills?
One way is for the government to answer this question:
"How can we employ 200,000 graduates such that for every dollar spent on a graduate, Ghana generates two dollars?"
In order words, how and where can Ghana utilize all these graduates to boost the economy?
