Medical staff must be trained to deal with public. It must be mandatory as done in advanced countries. And laws need to amended so that medical staff are licensed and can be sued for malpractice.

This is what most of the doctors do. They report to work late and leave before their hours are up even when there is emergency, yet they get full pay and they are still making more demands. Do not forget that some of these doctors steal supplies from the hospitals to supply private practices. I bet you still want to blame someone for all these.

Silly, unprofessional, Ghanaian nurses!
An elderly woman was admitted in a private Ghanaian hospital. A nurse on duty in the night thought the woman was not being quiet and rebuked her, wondering aloud why such an old lady should be brought to the hospital at all instead of being kept at home to die. She then proceeded to give her an overdose of the old woman's prescription. Nobody knows whether it was accidental or deliberate or due to lack of knowledge of how much of the prescription she was to give to the old woman. The old woman fell silent immediately, and drowsy until her passing about three days later. The old woman managed, however, to tell her experience in the hands of that particular nurse before she passed. She was 90. Sad to say the old lady was my sweet mother!
Most nurses in Ghana are indeed heartless and angry with themselves and everybody else. They see other people as animals. It's surprising to know that most of them are women.

Well,we all know that in the civilized world the nurses attend to patients before going for the doctor but in our backward society I always hear and have witnessed the nurses say there is no doctor, they cannot attend to patiens which I dont understand and I wonder what kind of training these nurses have and what their responsibilities are,at least give the person first aid while waiting for the doctor.
Are they not trained how to treat wounds and if so why they cannot display what they have learnt?
The punishment is too lenient and I wonder how removal from night duty can be punishment, may be that is the time they get to sleep.
Lateness to work and leaving work early is a common practice in Ghana, that doctor is not alone, most of his colleagues do the same but they want to get paid more than every worker in the world.

Let me tell you that not only I know a lot about health care but have certificates in that field though I don't do that any more, even lunatics know that when a wounded man comes to a hospital the first thing is first aid,not even that a nurse or whoever knows how to give first aid will do that even on a road side.

Hey my friend, stay away from subject you do not know about! A Nurse, Comfort just told you she is talking as a Nurse in the USA and you are asking such questions?
That is USA, Nurses do their job. They see the patient before the Doctor comes in and if a patient needs emergency care like wounds being taking care of, the Nurse will take care of it if it is a life or death situation. Paramedics do the same thing. They do not fold their hands for the Patient to die!

Corney, it is sad the two patients died but I don't totally blame the nurses. Nurses do not give medication. What they do is take reasons for your visit and send it to the Doctor who attend to you. They cannot give you ordinary saline infusion without the Doctors' permission. Why? Because even in the Developed Countries, there is nothing like there is no Doctor. However, if you report at some hospitals with some kind of ailments, Doctors on duty will not attend to you. A pregnant friend of mine developed gallstone at the same period. There was no specialist to attend to her at the time. She was not even given a pain medicine as she cried and complained of pains until after 12 hours when a specialist on duty at Emory University came to attend to her. When I asked why no Doctor would attend to her, it was explained to me that it needed a complex surgery. No Doctor or nurse present will give her any medication.
Corney you also know that if you go to any hospital in Denver, Washington etc, no nurse will give you even a common pain medicine until the Doctor on duty say so after your lab results are in. The reason for that is only Physician assistants, Practicing nurses and medical Docs are the only ones that can write prescription. Ordinary nurses cannot write prescription or give medication. They do so at the peril of their licences and also being sued. Nobody wants that. I am not saying if someone is bleeding to death, the one should not be attended to. What the nurses should have done was refer the patient immediately to the nearest hospital. It has happened to me in ATL before.
I do not doubt the capabilities of our nurses. I tell you some of our nurses are more experienced and capable than some of our Doctors. We can change situations by making it legal for our Senior nurses to be able to write prescriptions and attend to patients in the absence of Doctors.
As for workers going to work late and leaving early is true with all Ghanaians except the military and Police which are "Force work".
With the docs asking for more money and conditions of service, Corney, some of their demands are quite outrageous but you would have done same if you were in their positions. They compare their lots to some category of workers. I find it hard why various governments could not sit down to settle on their conditions of service. How should one whose work is seen as essential and also risky be employed without conditions of service. This can only happen in Africa and some Third World countries.(I don't blame Mahama for the crisis because this situation has been there since the time of Adam). Mahama and some government appointees did not help matters with their utterances and some opposition party members are stoking the embers. The situation is not helping the average and poor Ghanaian. Why do we have to let many people die before this simple issue is resolved?

Frank I did not say anywhere that the nurses should have given him medication,I wrote they should have attended to him to offer him first aid while waiting for a doctor.
Here if you go to the hospital it is a routine that when you are taken in a CNA or a Medical Assistant will attend to you first and then the nurse before a doctor is called in,sometimes they do X-ray before the doctor comes in if that is necessary,I believe strongly all that was done for your pregnant friend and she was given a bed,not left unattended, your friend waiting for a specialist did not mean they did not attend to her, they checked her in but they were not in a position to treat her since she needed a specialist which is not the same as what happened in this case.
I had medication classes many times and know the protocol in giving medication,I did a work which that was a requirement for almost everybody regardless of your position and it is a pass or fail class that you are given certificate which qualifies you as what they call QMAP to give medication to people.
Most of the nurses in Ghana if not all don't have respect for patients as we see here,no nurse in America will sit down while a patient is dying, saying there is no doctor, she will definitely do her part before waiting for the doctor.
I had experience of going to Kaiser one day and when the doctor who was supposed to see me was busy not coming early they brought a different doctor but they cannot do that to your friend because her visit was not a primary visit.
I witnessed that attitude of nurses in Ghana myself and the wounded man had to be taken to Korlebu when the nurses refused to even sit them down just sitting down telling them there was no doctor and making mockery of the patient that he may have gone to rob somebody and they cut his arm, very barbaric, they sometimes even beat the patiens with insults just very common.

Most of the things you said are true but the much that a nurse can do for you(except a Practicing Nurse) prior to being seen by the Doctor is to take your height, weight, temperature blood pressure and complain. This fowarded to the Doctor who if need be ask for needed bloodwork and X'ray to be done before the Doctor attends to you. Sometimes the Doctor can ask for some first aid to be given while he/she waits for the results of the requested tests. Even the giving of first aid before test results are in is seldom done. So, if a patient is given a kind of fluid or first aid, it would be at the instance of the Doctor. The nurse will not give it on her own.
When you talk about some of our nurses not being respectful and uncaring, that has been the truth for a long time. You go to the hospital and some nurses will treat you like a subhuman, though some nurses are good. Sometimes you have to pay bribe before you can see the Doctor. We cannot always blame the nurses for that because they are not very well paid and others are not paid for 22 months. Will they not be frustrated? They also have families to feed.
As for our Doctors whose agitations I sometimes agree with some of them, Do not suggest anything to them when you are in their consulting room. Not long ago, it happened to me. I was having a rise in body temperature and I visited Koforidua Central Government Hospital. I started by speaking Twi to him explaining to him how I feel. He became so angry when I suggested to him that it looks like I am having fever. He burst out angrily:"If you know that you have Fever, why then do you come here? Go to the Pharmacy and buy your medication. I sat silently and watched him. Whe he was done, I also changed the Meterband to English, yelled and cursed at him That surprised him because people treat them as demi gods. I continued yelling, got up, opened his consulting room door, cursed him more for people to hear and finally banged his door and left while people around watched me. I later regreted for throwing courtesy to the dogs but sometimes you can't help it.
Why should there be only one Doctor at a hospital at any point in time? They become overworked, frustrated, tired and sometimes see that the World cannot be without them. They then pour their anger on patients. Why should one Doctor see over 50 patients a day.

You finish your statements in sympathetic tone to the Doctors and Nurses and seem to care less about the patient that lost his/her life. Surely I see negligence here. Not being paid has no relevance here. I believe these Doctors and Nurses must be paid but these are Apples and Oranges. If and when they show up to work, they must do what they are trained and required to do.

I am sometimes much soaked with tears of sadness wishing to crush some parts of the world if I could have it in my own hands.
Almost, all religions believe that we are all equally made. However in professions and daily life, there is a wide gap and difference wider than the width of an ocean.
For many times, we do hear workers and staffs going on strike either for increase in payment or seeking for conditions of service. This act cannot be overruled as depicted in the labor acts of a country such as Ghana.
The effect of these is that the needy and less resource people are much affected. This can be clearly seen as doctors are on strike in Ghana.
My question is, is it that the farmers also don't wish for better prices for their commodities? Is it that they are not concerned about having conditions of service?
Farming is not easy and a person who is being involved in this activity knows what I am talking about. In fact, there is no magic in agriculture. The least period of returns can be two months.
Majority of farmers in Ghana are peasants, earning as low as less than 2000 cedis ( about $600) in a year irrespective of how much they toil. They are indeed not lazy! These farmers do also have family size of more than five.
One may think life is all about food and their level of living is low. However the imagination, this is not the case. The current situation of climate change backed with severe pests and diseases have really ruin the lives of many farmers. Some farmers are the poorest in Ghana. Hmmm they too vote.
Nonetheless, doctors, politicians, lawyers, judges, teachers, staffs and all beings depend on these farmers locally or internationally for survival and even before they speak.
I suggest if people don't appreciate our efforts, and still withdrawn their duties from the hospital, court, classroom and others, we too will withdrawn from the farms and concentrate on subsistence production as others are seeking only for their own cares.
For many times, we too face economic and social challenges such as no subsidies on inputs, poor marketing channels, poor road networks, bad trading systems with low prices, climate change, etc. Our cries for help have even drain the oceans in us. Nonetheless we still care and are always on duties whether rain or shine, light or no light.
These farmers I suggest, need not praises for their efforts. However, they too have hearts to feel, eyes to see and ears listening to what is really happening in the country. Watch out!!!!!!.

This NDC government under John Mahama is the most wicked political administration ever in any human society. But, i have no doubt in my mind that the omnipotent God in Heaven will hold each one of us accountable for our evil minds......We may suffer but for a while
