They are always complaining about foreign contractors replacing them at the work-place with small-small unqualified boys from Europe and China. But the stark truth is that our trained architects, engineers, doctors, accountants, lawyers etc are no match for the more experienced but perhaps less qualified or untrained counterparts from Europe or China.
Our technocrats are obviously badly trained by badly trained lecturers in our universities.

...nobody engages Project Management Skills to accomplish anything in Ghana. But it is amazingly impressive to watch these two timing, loudmouthed local language local knowledge professionals. You'd think Ghanaians are the most intelligent species on mother earth, conclusively, we are the most dumb. I just can't get over this phenomenon where you see a stretch of road construction taking a haphazard comletion schedule, then just when you smile and say bravo, you see about an 1/8 of a mile of unfinished terrain, and I swear to God, that is it, it will never get fixed. The most recent such irresponsible road construction project I have been plying is the IPSA to East Legon Boulevard roundabout. At times I like to rationalize the fact that perhaps they didn't get paid the balance of the projects budget, cos these ministers are thieves plain common thieves. They will sit on the money till you turn grey, then they will start buying cars and building mansions, or engaging in illegal proliferation of commerce (Taxi, Trotro, Hair Salon, Street Hawking investments). Sorry for the innocent who perished in that blaze, but quite frankly, half the residents of modern day Accra do not deserve to be here. and how they leave I don't give a rats ass!!!

GUESS WHAT, WE HAD BARELY SETTLED ON SOME FORM OF REGULAR OIL DRILLING THAN OUR MINISTERS AND OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS START ERECTING PETROL AND GAS STATIONS ALL OVER THE PLACE. BEATS ME HOLLOW WHERE ALL THAT MONEY IS COMING FROM. IN NIGERIA, SOMETHING CALLED BUNKERING IS THE IN-THING. AGGRIEVED NATIONALS FROM THE OIL-PRODUCING STATES GET THEMSELVES VESSELS AND TAKE THEIR SHARE OF THE BLACK GOLD TO GO SELL. IN GHANA, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS DIVERT CONTRACT MONEY INTO RETAIL STRUCTURES AND HAUL TANKER LOADS OF PETROL AND GAS INTO BURIED RECEPTACLES FOR SALE TO PASSIVE GHANAIANS - INCLUDING YOURS TRULY. PITY RAWLINGS IS NOW HUFFING ABOUT FROM THE RAVAGES OF AGE, SOME OF US WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE SOME OF THESE NOUVEAU RICHE POLITICIANS SWEAT IN THE DOCK EXPLAINING HOW THEY CAME BY THEIR RICHES. Castigating professions will not solve Ghana's problems.the same Engineers leave Ghana and perform wonders. If we cannot build and manufacture things in Ghana then we have problems. The Oil and Gas industry, mining Industry, Factories are run by engineers and artisans and other manufacturing entitities.Road construction alone cannot be used as aexcuse to blast them. The same mines provide the gold that is exported. If the education system is not doing well do we catigate teachers. Our % of enginers in Ghana is very small.

This is mostly true of our Engineers. But it is not unique to the Engineers. It is a general canker in Ghana among our Field Professionals. From Forestry to Agriculture to Civil Engineering, most of our Personnel prefer cladding themselves in suits or casual home apparel to stay in Offices and homes to give instructions to subordinate field staff who may not be all that proficient in carrying out the instructions.
More, these top-level field staff hardly go to the field to check if the work they assigned have been done right. In the end, they cook the books and reports to meet requirements, thereby hiding any structural defects and shoddy work in the field.
It is ironic that these very Engineers and other field Personnel are the first to object to any move by the Government to import the services they undermine from overseas. They wouldn't even calmly accept their own Ghanaians in diaspora coming home to help on their work teams, let alone tolerate expatriate Personnel. Some may even sabotage the Projects to cast doubts on the wisdom to contract the expatriate Personnel. While local content deserves high priority, it is the diligence it brings to the table that justifies any such prioritization of labor by the Government.
Such is the Culture of Labor in Ghana and it is about time the Professional Associations and NGOs got on the case of these Personnel to work for their money.
Meanwhile, we should amend our Laws to accommodate slapping lazy Engineers and their counterparts in other fields with hefty penalties like paying for any ensuing repairs to their shoddy work, and for any legal suits incurred from harm to individuals attributable to such work.
No Country develops with shoddy execution of projects. And it is time we delved deeper into the causes of our Economic plight to capture all culprits of any devious activity, beyond Government Officials, that sets us back. That strict adherence- to-quality expectation must be tightly woven into the curbing of contract award malpractices.
Our workforce must be vigilant and whistleblowers must be encouraged to tip authorities of any shady behavior by their work mates and superiors at work that they know would cost us a great deal.
Most of our losses in poor Construction and overpayments for projects are only possible with the connivance of the Engineers and other field Personnel. They all eventually turn into Political stooges to take their share in the 'create, loot and share' Economy.
They have to change. We all have to change. While we are descending heavily on the Engineers, we must also check our own behavior like dumping trash into open drainage arteries to block the flow of running water.
In fact, all our drainage system must conform with what prevails in all modern Cities elsewhere around the World. The culverts must all be rebuilt subterranean. That requirement must be part of any new Development everywhere in the Country.

alhaji u are right ooo. the mother body, ghana institution of engineers are always busying itself organising annual ball, winning and dinning unlike their counterparts in civil society who advocated fiercely against public advertising and smoking of cigarettes and lately banning the use of celebrities in public advertising of alcoholic beverages. there is alot to which our engineer's body could do to accelerate our speedy and qualitative progress like doing strong advocacy, pushing for private bills in parliament and more importantly ensuring that their members deliver excellent and high quality finish projects to the people and also severely sanction those who fall out of line.
again, the engineering body could help government and our traditional authorities to ensure that our villages, towns and cities develop and conform to a certain prescribed layouts and a comprehensive plans so that right from the word go this knowledge become imbibed in our people encourage every one to help ensure that our communities do not grow haphazardly..they should therefore stop their pedestrian and perennial and reckless habit of winning and dining in their socalled annual buffet to help fashion out not only safe and secure but aesthetically pleasurable communities for us all to live in and enjoy. that is their mandate and nothing else. they cannot fail the nation on that simply on the altar of their parochial interest. they should wake up boldly to their charge and be counted as true change makers of our land...
