Yes ,all those extra classes must be banned in all public schools. The minister should be tough and bold and issue a general ban to that unnecessary classes just to benefit only the teachers.

obviously, you have never taught before. First of all, many parents actually want the kids out of the house because their busy schedules would not let them be at home to monitor them at certain times. Again, not all kids in a class will be able to quickly grasp a topic. As a result, you need to be wary of the not so bright students else they will be left behind. Also, the syllabus is simply overloaded. Too many topics, very little time to comprehensively exhaust them.
Trust me,i would have agreed with your stance some 8 years ago,but not when i have gained 5 years of teaching experience.
i stopped teaching a few years ago.
No prizes for guessing why.

South Korea spends $16bn on extra classes
Pupils need reading skills and infact reading is the basic skills in education. In Ghana primary school timetable has only a period once a week for reading skills So pupils are promoted to the upper classes without reading skills Most of the extra classes periods are used to teach these children reading skills. At the jhs and the shs etc without the extra classes teachers cannot complete the syllabi of most subjects. Extra classes is done everywhere in the world to bring up less than average students period.

Here is why. You have teachers who have not been paid for months. Some transferred teachers have to leave classrooms and be runinh from one account office to the other just to be told "your paperwork has not arrived". Tell me how you expect these teachers to pay their rent, bills, feed their families and have the peace of mind to teach? This is why they organize extra classes. 1. Because they need the money since the government is not paying them on time and 2. Because they take precious time off to chase after accounting general for paperwork and hence can't cover all the required materials for the semester/ term. Sometimes I wonder where all these people got their education. We can't even think critically about problems. Waste of degrees and a disgrace to the educated community.

In fact their actions makes in very impossible for the young Ghanaian child to aspire to be prof. Doc. etc. We grew up with names like Doc.Mary Grant, Prof. Awura-Ama Addy etc. who's words and presence was graceful and motivational. Their words and actions were full of wisdom and in accordance with the titles the deservedly hold. Today all we have is profs who left their brains at home and think with their stomach. I feel very sad for the future of this country!
