The nurses in Ghana are simply not serious. They fight over dress code and not money. Use why they have different dress colors among themselves and their ranks. My mum was a victim. She worked over 35 yrs as a nurse and came home less than 18 million cedis in 2007. You see why the doctors are always on strike? They are simply fighting for their future but the nurses are still sitting there debating on who should wear what.

The larger society that has been built on loyalty to tribe and or political party gave rise to laws that perpetuate the kind of inequalities and injustices all around us. There are currently those in society willing to die for a political party or politician just for the probability of being rewarded with a meaningless job or post that exist because of politics but cannot be sustained by goverment; they become a drain on government resources. The net effect is a government that cannot adequately contribute it's share to the retirement package of civil servants but can raid all other resources to meet self imposed obligations to outgoing politicians who serve less than 10 years in office and get a chunk of the pie.
The plight of this retired civil servant is repeated a million times through Ghana each year and yet the Rawlings's, Kufour's and others of Ghana's elite class could give a darn even as Kufour flies around the globe on a government dime for absolutely no purpose. Our government by design kills it's own citizens slowly but steadily by denying retirees an existence fit for humans at retirement even while politicians feel entitled, by law, to the undeserved retirement packages they offer unto themselves.

My wife got GHS20,000 after 36 years of service retiring as Assistant Director of Education and I thought it was meager. Now I know why. Our governments over the years have misused the workers money and now the workers suffer for it. All they have done is to change the law. And in this case all the political parties are equally guilty. When the Pensions Act was being amended last year or so, nobody heard a whimper from those who always claim they are working for the ordinary Ghanaians. But touch their ex-gratia and the whole world will hear. A useless bunch of self-seekers in the name of parliamentarians.

I think there is a problem with the new law which should have been foreseen. So where is all the contributions she made to SSNIT before the law came into effect? The law should have made it such that those who will be better of will come under the new law while those likely to be worse of remained under the old scheme. This also brings into sharp focus government's insistence on selecting fund managers for workers. Government should then make up for any losses that come about since gov't wants to be the decider on the manager and not the poor worker. The Unions need to fight to get gov't's hands off the 2nd tier since gov't does not appear to want to be responsible for any losses that may come.
