This is a joke. Don't even compare Nkrumah to Lee Kwan Yun. While Lee was focused trying to develop a small Island city with a population at that time less than one million People, Nkrumah has a grandiose ambition of being President of Africa and using our scarce resources to woo other Africa Leaders, 10 million pounds in 196 to Guinea and another 10 million pounds to Mali.
Lee was focused like a laser in developing Singapore whilst Nkrumah was globetrotting like a lost soul whilst our economy was tittering towards collapse. Our GDP was declining in 1966 when Nkrumah was deposed. The fact that both of them were Dictators does not mean Nkrumah would have achieved what Lee did.
You can compare Nkrumah to Castro of Cuba and Kim of North Korea and you will be right.

1972 born SARPONG,listen, when are you going to stop relying on HEARSAY.Nkrumah was even bigger than Lee because his goal was to transform the entire African continent AND NOT A SMALL ISLAND NATION WITH A POPULATION OF LESS THAN ONE MILLION.The man of vision,Kwame Nkrumah knew the advantages of a continental government for Africa, both politically and economically, hence his burning desire to achieve that goal.Ill-educated and ignorant people like you who are Nkrumah haters lack that rare vision. It takes matured scholars and those with in-depth knowledge of African politics to appreciate Nkrumah's efforts.

Deep down in your heart of hearts, you know and believe that had the military not overthrown the man, Ghana would have been rubbing shoulders with countries like South Africa and Egypt by now in terms of industrialisation and structures that make the modern state.
Maybe, your father or uncles who sponsored the bomb throwers must have been jailed by Kwame and they all died in detention, hence your morbid hatred and dislike for the man.

Can you imagine that! Sekou being the prime minister. Also be reminded that Singapore although a socialist country practices free-market capitalism, free trade and is very welcoming to multinational companies. The transformation of Singapore was because Lee's attitude attracted massive investments and many of the world’s biggest companies to Singapore. Nkrumah simply antagonized the West during the cold war time which led to his early demise while Lee used tact and was laser focused on developing Singapore and reining in corruption.Nkrumah took his eyes off the ball when he decided to focus on Africa instead of Ghana. Many of his ministers starting amassing ill gotten wealth and economy nose dived, by 1965 we were already asking for a bail out from the IMF and most of the government enterprises were running in the red. Ama Atta is not being honest -- it is the usual CPP nostalgia which has not translated to votes for CPP.

Enough of this nonsense about Kwame Nkrumah. Ama Ata Aidoo should have by now, realized the fallacy that informed Nkrumah's rule, given her education. Where is the legacy of this supposed giant? Nkrumah's Ghana is tottering on the brink of economic collapse, almost sixty years after Independence. Nkrumah was Leader of Government business from 1951 to 1956. Prime Minister (1957-1959) President (1960-1966) Whatever was needed to build a foundation for a prosperous nation could have been done within this period. Where are the men and women he nurtured, what about his own political party? Near zero, I presume. Lee Kwan Yew built a prosperous nation within the same period Nkrumah was leader of Ghana. Lee has bequeathed a strong and prosperous nation to his people for eternity. We cannot compare apples with oranges.

Well said. It is interesting to note that those hypocrites who preach Nkrumah as a saint are the same people who have looted Ghana under NDC governments.Nkrumah was more like Castro ho was only committed to self- aggrandizement. The fact that most of the leaders after him have been selfish and greedy does not justify his detention of political opponents and his wasteful expenditure on his nightmare of becoming the head of a continental African government. Something that no other leader took him serious for. We in Ghana now should thank God we are not part of Guinea and Mali.living under Sharia laws.

Hundreds of thousands died in the Kwame Nkrumah Killing Field while thousands more died in exile. He poluted the minds of our children with his hated Young Pioneers.

Singapore and Malaysia peninsula used to be a single state – Malaya - until Lee Kaun Yew the founding father wrested Singapore the backwater island port from Malaya and turned into a modern hub city state par excellence. Today Singapore’s GDP which was nowhere near Ghana before it got independence in 1965 has grown from nothing to a 100 fold GDP of over $290 billion. A GDP most Ghanaians would be yearning for but only in their dreams.
In 2010, Singapore’s GDP (current prices, US dollars) was US$222.699 billion and its GDP (PPP) was US$291.937 billion.
In 2010, Singapore’s GDP (PPP) per capita was US$56,521.73 – behind Qatar and Luxembourg.
Singapore had the 8th largest current account balance in the world for 2010 at US$49.454 billion.
These are figures five years ago so you can imagine where Singapore currently find herself.
"I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn't be here today" (National Day Rally in 1986) Lee Kuan Yew
Had Kwame Nkrumah completed the SYDP in the early 70’s that would have been our launch pad for the next big thing. Instead the traitors complain of the saboteurs leaders being locked behind bars with the introduction of PDA. Lee who locked up his political opponents at will and ruled with iron fist in a velvet glove was also autocratic. (I am trying to be generous by not invoking the word dictator). Lee who ruled Singapore for 30 years like Suharto of Indonesia, Park Chung-Hee of South Korea all ruled heavy-handed which makes Nkrumah pale against anyone of them. Those whose Mate Meho forebears wanted to forestall or thwart the building of Akosombo dam cannot complain of dum sor today. Had Kwame Nkrumah not been steadfast to build the Akosombo dam it will not be dum sor but dum dum - a total blackout or perennial solar eclipse in Ghana.
Lee’s People's Action Party (PAP) has been in power since the birth of the new nation. What does this tell us?!Stability with growth. A benevolent dictator or autocrat who had his nation at heart that brings prosperity to his country men and women is better than any democratic experiment. What most of this Mate Meho NPP folks forget is democracy is not an event. Look at Iraq and Libya now then you know what I am talking about. It took America a civil war and over 240 years to to get to where they are now. The British Magna Carta which paved way for the parliamentary system in Westminster was written in the 12th century so for the young spoiled elite Brits like PM David Cameroun to think that they can forced down democracy or any of their modern day ideological crusade down the throat of others when it took them centuries to get to comprehend such things as human rights etc is disconcerting to say the least. Most of them have forgotten that only a century and twenty years separates us from slavery - one of the worst atrocity in human history.
The following are some of the legacies LKY left behind: Source BBC
Mr Lee set about creating a highly educated work force fluent in English, and reached out to foreign investors to turn Singapore into a manufacturing hub.
He embarked on a programme of slum clearance, industrialisation and tackling corruption. He was a fierce advocate of a multi-racial Singapore.
However, Mr Lee also introduced tight controls, and one of his legacies was a clampdown on the press - tight restrictions that remain in place today.
Dissent - and political opponents - were ruthlessly quashed. Today, PAP remains firmly in control. There are currently six opposition lawmakers in parliament.
Other measures, such as corporal punishment, a ban on chewing gum and the government's foray into matchmaking for Singapore's brightest - to create smarter babies - led to perceptions of excessive state interference.
Mr Lee criticised what he saw as the overly liberal approach of the US and the West, saying it had "come at the expense of orderly society".

Nkrumah was overthrown by some disgruntled soldiers who were against the fast lane the greatest and the most illustrious son of Africa, Kwame Nkrumah was doing for Ghana.Today, Ghanaians run to seek greener pastures from Singapore especially our talented and experienced maritime engineers and other seamen.A giant has fallen and his passing has struck a historical chord of parallel musicality to the memories of Ghanaians. The bane of Ghana's development is the unbridled use of lies and propaganda to make Nkrumah look like a demi-god. Yes Nkrumah was a visionary but it is important to emphasize here that a vision without a strategy makes you more vulnerable than the visionless person. The difference between our own Nkrumah and Lee Kuan Yew is not the lack of vision but the lack of tact and strategy. Whiles Nkrumah assumed a posture of painting the west black and evil, Lee realized their power and strength and courted them to his advantage. Lee in his book "Singapore from a third world to a first world" states that even before the end of the cold war he new the west was going to win, therefore tactically aligned with them. What did our own Nkrumah do?He rather joined a so called non-aliened movement and pretended he were a neutral arbiter when all his actions pointed to a support to the East. For me i hold no grudge against the honourable professor for her reminiscence but it is the failure of our intellectuals to properly analyze the flaws of Nkrumah that led to his monumental failure that is hurting modern day Ghana. When people like prof who had the benefit of education lament as though Nkrumah was the only human capable of solving our numerous challenges then it leaves much to be desired because education is to empower.

Ghana won't have survived.
But today, are they not coming back to recolonize us and you Fiti can NOT see it because you do not know which signs to look for.

AMA should stick to writing and leave politics to the politicians. The majority of people of Ghana found the situation under Nkrumah unbearable and intolerable. Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. At the time of Nkrumah's overthrow, the ordinary Ghanaian was not wealthy. There is no guarantee that if he had remained in power till his death, he would have transformed the lives of all of us and made us all wealthy. He was more concerned about the liberation of Africa. Let us stop trying to rewrite history and look at the present and the future. We can't bring him back to life. Let us move on.

Madam, Please for goodness sake don't do this argument here. We respect you so much. The comparison of Lee Kwan Yew to Nkrumah is not sound. Lee had been incorruptible from day one . His ministers and appointees were never corrupt because if he found out you went straight to jail. Lee did not depend on veranda boys to develop Singapore. He encouraged meritocracy and ensured that the best brains were always used for the national course. Lee did not have that grandiose vision of ruling South East Asia but concentrated on building his small country to be the shining star for the big nations to come and copy. Since he started his political career up to his death today, nobody has sustained any corruption charges against him. When an position member wronged him he did not detain him without trial but makes sure he sues you and take away your underwear He did not have a dream of being a messiah but a humble man who wanted his country to succeed at all cost and he achieved that perfectly.

Lee hailed him as a political martyr but says no such thing about his economics! The communist heading of the post alone tells us that this is propaganda. No one has said Nkrumah did not struggle for his country - but he bankrupted it. Read the Bank of Ghana 1965 report which breaks down as follows
Inflation 1% in 1952 - 22% in 1964
Growth 12% in 1952 and 1% in 1964
Debt £15 million in 1952 - £1 billion 1964
Please. Lee came to power fully in 1965 when the Ghanaian economy had been brought to its knees. We were queuing for food at Accra and Kumasi sports stadiums and we were, for the first time, begging the US for food under its PL480 programme
Also the jump in national debt has been the burden for every single government until NPP was forced to ask for bankruptcy under the HIPIC initiative!
So do not re-write our history

The difference is he didn't have traitors and bomb throwers sabotaging his every move. Even with the little time he had he made a huge impact in theat backwater of a country. His overthrow is the reason is a shit hole. And we have u to thank for that. Kuan a communist was able to build a nation which u so call capitalists now admire. Nkrumah was never afforded that time because you and your traitors were just that traitors. Kuan jailed the his opponents including founders of his party. Boy, start thinking out loud and then you know the huge damage the infamous 1966 coup did to Maame/Daavi Ghana. The West let him (LKY) be because it was the period of the cold war and Vietnam war was in full swing so any shift in balance of power to the advantage of USSR was not was in the best interest of the West. Which is why the USA even stood by as a coup took place in South Korea under their watch. Look you guys have to learn the chess of of politics before you open your gobs.

Captain, when Lee was a young man he was a communist. All of us know this! After a double first class at Cambridge, he was a capitalist but did not tell a soul. He went home, teamed up with British intelligence and used them to have the main players in the PAP detained (like our Big Six) and he gradually began to put his like minded liberalism in place - including the true genius behind his reforms, the ultra-capitalist DR Goh Swee (whom you have never heard of until today) and who was eulogized by lee himself when Goh died leaving behind his Hungarian refugee wife of decades.
This is why the left hates Lee at home and abroad
He crushed a planned violent attempt to turn Singapore into Cuban-style political entity - thank goodness he succeeded!

Since the announcement of the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, some Ghanaians have been trolling the absolute lie that, BUT for the glorious coup than ended the corruption and malfeasance of the Nkrumah regime in 1966, Nkrumah would have 'developed' Ghana as much as Yew did in Singapore. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nkrumah and Yew were totally different in their approach to politics and path of development. Nkrumah studied in the West (USA) but returned to Ghana as a committed Communist who would adopt communist vehicle of development. Yew also studied in the West (Britain) and returned a committed Capitalist and Free Enterprise enthusiast who would use capitalist vehicle to develop his country.
Singapore was a swampland in 1959 when Yew became the leader. Ghana was a rich wealthy country when Nkrumah became the leader in 1957. When he returned to Singapore, Yew formed the People’s Action Party of the largely English speaking Singaporeans, and sought accommodation with the majority Chinese speaking people who belonged to the Communist Party. Yew called this alliance, ‘the marriage of convenience.’ He was anti-communist to the core, but he need the initial support of everyone. PAP won the 1959 elections handily. And from then on, communism had no foothold in Singapore.
Compare that to Nkrumah’s. Nkrumah joined the freedom-loving, pro-capitalist, free enterprise party called United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Nkrumah left that party to help form/lead the Convention People’s Party (CPP) which won the elections handily. From then on Nkrumah subscribed to a Socialist/Communist mode of development. Would the developed West which was Capitalist help the leader of a new nation who supported their mode of development; or support someone who was trashing their mode of development?
Lee Kuam Yew succeeded because he adopted Capitalist/Free Enterprise mode of development. The West, especially British Banks and businesses flocked to Singapore and engineered the miracle that is Singapore.
When Nkrumah was overthrown, thousands of tractors bought from the Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries with Ghana’s hard earned foreign exchange laid rotten. The Soviet Union itself survived because it imported tons of wheat from the Capitalist USA.
So, please stop this useless ranting comparing Ghana to Singapore; South Korea; Malaysia; and other such countries whose GDP was much lower than Ghana’s. Had Nkrumah adopted the right policies, Ghana would have been better off. By the end of 1965, Nkrumah was appointing members of Ghana Parliament; Ghana’s foreign exchange was zero; Ghanaians line up to buy whatever purchase they need for their daily survival, because stores were empty.
China learnt a lesson from the failure of the communist mode of development, and now China’s development track is firmly anchored in the Capitalist route.
Singapore is what it is because of sensible path to development.
In the last days of December 1999, American TV host Ted Koppel interviewed Lee Kuan Yew about the World’s prospects in the new millennium of 2000. When asked about Africa’s prospects; Yew answered:
Africa wasted it’s time with useless Socialist cum Communist experimentations. He concluded, the path to sustainable development was through what had/has worked: Capitalist Free Enterprise mode of development.

Where in Ghana was socialism or communism prevailing? Heck theis big lies from Mate Meho is sickening.
Would millions of Nigerians and other foreigners like Syrians, Indians, and Lebanese etc subject themselves voluntary to socialism or communism when they have their own countries? Where did you get this homburg from?!
Business was booming for Lebanese, Syrians, Indians, and Nigerians which is why Busia applied the Aliens Compliance Order. By so doing Busia created an economic vacuum which could not be filled by Ghanaians who had the same expertise.
The fart lies about Ghanaians lining up for so called essential commodities was through hoarding of foreign imported goods instigated by Mate Meho nation wreckers. Look, there was made in Ghana ideal milk produced by Nestle a Swiss company but the stupid Ghanaian whose mind has been twisted would rather prefer to line up for Peak milk. The same thing goes for Nestle Milo. The Ghanaian will bypass Milo and rather stand in the hot sun for Ovaltine. The foolish Ghanaian will line for for Tate and Lyre cube sugar instead of going for Komenda sugar. Tema food complex built by Germans was producing canned fish like sardines and mackerel but the myopic Ghanaian would prefer one from Portugal or Geisha from Japan. There was GNTC in every town to meet our demands so stop telling lies which does not hold water.
When the Kwabenya Atomic reactor was completed in 1964 the Mate Meho rumours made rounds that Nkrumah was going to build Atomic bomb. Atomic reactors are also there for genetic modified crops etc. Nkrumah saw the Need to improve our agriculture but methods have to be found to increase crops growth and also crops which are resistant to insects etc. Look you Mate Meho descendants have been fed on travesty of the TRUTH so you keep recycling it without pausing to think.
Now tell me which of the 69 foctories came from a socialist state apart from the Bata shoe foctory and Komenda sugar factory?! You Nation wreckers should collectively bow your heads in shame. Nkrumah Lives!

Be quiet and go. Political/intellectual dishonesty from people like you has been our downfall. Comparing Nkrumah with Lee Kuan Yew is a joke. The latter kept his people together by creating law and order and respecting his country's constitution; he allowed freedom of expression; whereas you idol, Nkrumah, plunged us into political chaos and instability. I think Akyeampong would have done better than Nkrumah had he not surrounded himself with people of your caliber.

Thanks for this truth brother! Here are a few facts about the Osagyefo's last days!:

I wonder if Lee Kuan Yew put citizens of Singapore in detention without trial; if he meddled in World Politics by openly associating his country with the now collapsed Soviet Communist style of gov't? Lee Kuan Yew was far different from Nkrumah in the style of rule and direction. Nkrumah was eloquent with his speech; he had great vision just like JB Danquah and other leaders who started the quest towards Ghana's independence an development.
However, Nkrumah started drifting towards the Communist's Eastern Block, after seeking initial economic help and development partnership with the West, like the UK, and the US. The people of Ghana started murmuring when Nkrumah started supressing them; he asked every family to declare their assets etc. The economy started declining. By the time Nkrumah was dethroned, Ghana's reserves stood at only 500,000 Cedies, after the Colonial rulers had left us about 500 Million Pounds.
I wonder how many State-owned enterprises are there in Singapore, as Nkrumah set out to do by establishing state-owned factories and state everything? In later 1970s and early 1980s the IMF forced Ghana to abandon its state-owned project and the removal of subsidies on commodities for economic recovery and a sustained economic growth.
Most Ghanaians in the 55-65yrs age bracket still harbour the notion that Ghana should embrace the communist and socialist way of governance before Ghana could develop. It's all an illusion; it won't work! All we have to do is empower state organs and institutions by adequately resourcing them, creating an enabling business climate by allowing the private sector to flourish and fuel economy for the needed growth while we fight corruption. That's the only way forward!

The comparison of Nkrumah to other visionary and successful leaders like this Yew,is unfounded.
While these leaders chose to work in cooperation with others focussing on their countries,he(Nkrumah)chose the path of divide and rule reign of terror while wasting our country's resources on non beneficial projects now we're feeling the effects and yet you lots keep hailing this nation wrecker as a saint. How ignorant, stupid and insult to the intelligence of Ghanains is that?To hell with all of you who keep reminding us of this disasterious leader.

In politics, nothing is offered on a silver platter; it must be ensured. Nkrumah's failure came from the fact that he was overthrown. Lee Kuan Yew ensured that he could not be overthrown. There is never a dictator (and infact any leader) who does not have enough enemies wanting him overthrown.
All that Nkrumah did would have stood right had he remained not overthrown. For instance, how could he avoid being concerned about the liberation of other African countries still under colonial rule? Or how could he look on unconcerned about those who were working hard to kill him? Indeed his development plans for Ghana were spot-on but once he was unable to stop his opponents from overthrowing him, he surrendered the initiative to his opponents to narrate his story.

You see, there will always be those among us who didn't want to hear the Message and still do not want to hear it.
They are consumed by the ocean of hate

You see, compared to Yew,Kwame was too God-like.Yew's iron grip on power and
restricting the press had a sense of purpose and seriousness. We all know how his grip turned out to be,for Singapore's advancement.
He believed that DISCIPLINE MAKES A NATION.So was Kwame.
For Yew,"MATEMEHO"(during his reign)
had NO PLACE in a young Nation trying to accomplish-achieve it's set objectives.Yew found that distracting and disruptive to Nation- Building.
Yew knew that something that will help the whole community required tough measures,so was Kwame.
Yet,in the Ghanaian Experience, the mere fact that kwame was Nzima man did not sit well with my own tribal people.Infact, growing up,I heard in my
own community:
"yentraho 3ma Nzimaa ni eni ade3"..meaning "we will not sit by and watch Nzimaa man rule us"
Yes,and that my friends,is how UP/NLM was formed.
Yew did not have time for that crapola.
For this reason, when numerous attempts were made on Kwame's life,:
IT WAS GEOFFREY BING,NOT KWAME WHO FIRST INTRODUCED PDA IN NSAWAM(ask any scholar in Ghana's History).
Like Yew,Kwame also made our future the purpose of his life.He appealed to our best hopes. He put Ghana and Black Africa on the map at the UN.
Like Yew,Kwame also wanted Ghana to succeed.Infact,a lot of who we all are
today stems from the Educational Policies of this Great and Noble African. He made Ghana the most highly educated workforce on the Continent.
Today, there are still those who saw him as a dictator....and still praise Yew.
To his ardent critics I quote this famous line from Benjamin Franklin
"Any fool can critizize,condemn
and complain..and most fools do"
So you go on condemning Kwame...
"yeso ne yawiaa na 3bo y3n no".
WE CAN ALL LIVE IN THE SWAMP OR DRAIN IT TOGETHER AS AFRICANS.KN
