The IMF deal will not be fair to Ghana at all, because its calculations were based essentially on traditional economics - on neo-classical economics, not on ecological economics which takes a broader perspective in framing environmental questions that incorporate laws derived from how we take account of our natural resources. example did IMF include green accounting (Google and read about
Green Accounting).
IMF decision will not be fair to Ghana because their decision will be based on using the traditional economic approach, instead of the ecological economics approach, and that is not fair to Ghanaians, especially the future generation.

The name is Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) based strictly on neolibralism economics, so please stop confusing the issues. Countries that are in financial crises and holding on to the last straw do not have the leisure for ecological economics or green accounting. Get real, Marcus! It is like asking a person on life support to eat 'fufu ena abenkwan'. It does not work that way.
SAPs are created with the goal of reducing the country's fiscal imbalances in the short and medium term or in order to adjust the economy to long-term growth. The IMF usually implements stabilisation policies and the WB is in charge of adjustment measures. This means the SAP policies imposed on our government by IMF are supposed to allow Ghana's economy to become more market oriented. This then forces our government to concentrate more on trade and production so it can boost the economy by earning foreign exchange. IMF would insist on our government implementing "free market" programs and policies, as they did in the 80s and 90s when Rawlings invited them in. They would also insist on a lot more privatization and deregulation, as well as the reduction of trade barriers. By the time they are finished with us, all of our institutions will be owned by foreigners. We have the scars to show that this will be the case.
We are going to see a lot more cheap Chinese goods in Ghana that would sink our local producers because they cannot compete. We have been here before in the 80s and 90s, but it seems we do not learn. Once trade barriers are removed, the Chinese, Europeans, and Americans would be flooding our market with cheap products whereas they would continue to protect their markets from our exports. So where is the gain from trade libralization? This is what happens to a people who do not use their heads.
So Marcus, spare us green accounting and ecological economics rigmarole.

Invest in dumsor and fighting public sector corruption and collecting more taxation revenue. That's what a responsible govt must do
