Kosmos seems to be on the path to avoid the mistakes of Shell and other Oil Companies in the Niger Delta. Its increasing interest in ensuring our Communities directly gain something substantive back from offering our Oil resources for extraction by it is a heart-warming divergence from what other extractive Companies had been doing, or not doing, to impoverish the local communities of whose land the Resources exist in.
I hope Kosmos continues to on that path to help our folks realize it was not a mistake to bring that Company into the Country to harness our Oil Resources after all, in spite of the initial concerns of many of us with the process of choosing it.
We must take note of the fact that Kosmos seems to be doing what the EO-Group, especially, the 'O' of the EO, ought to have long been doing for their fellow natives.
The Edusei Foundation led by the 'E' of the EO-Group has been on record to have made some philanthropic contributions to the Otumfuor Educational Fund and a few others. We have not seen any such magnanimity from the 'O' side of the EO-Group. So, we are still waiting. We should not get ahead of ourselves by making premature judgments on the caring spirit of the fortunate fellow Ghanaians who made the EO-Group to partner with Kosmos to harness our Jubilee Oil.
However, I would bluntly say that the EO-Group must do more to establish the worthiness of their economic opportunity. I was hoping that by now, the Group would have diversified into other ventures, or expanded, to employ more of our Citizens, in the very least.
It is always the best way to show fellow Citizens how grateful a few fortunate ones that receive exceptional advantage to manage a crucial national resource are, by creating more opportunities for others to lift themselves out of poverty.
Dr. Edusei Barwuah has begun demonstrating that spirit of caring and responsibility with his Foundation's donations, the Edusei Foundation. I challenge him to do more by creating more Businesses or setting up some easily accessible Venture Capitalist fund to help finance fledgling local entrepreneurs.
George Owusu is yet to show any such responsibility. And I would expect him to begin doing that, too, soon. Quietly withdrawing out of the Public view to enjoy any financial benefits from the EO-Kosmos partnership privately would further deepen people's displeasure with the EO-Group and any other with similar roots.
Surely, not every Ghanaian could even initiate an idea that would become a national source of wealth, let alone having the courage and talent to develop it. Therefore, it makes sense that a few that have what it takes are encouraged to do so, and when successful, not envied but applauded.
However, that success worthy of our commendation would be the one that opens up further opportunities for the less fortunate and endowed. Not the kind of success that would depict the fortunate as secluding themselves to enjoy all their wealth in quietude.
So long as the encouragement referred to is transparent, and totally legal, no one would raise an eyebrow about it. Even in questionable circumstances for offering such encouragement, it is with continued service to the Society via private enterprise expansion that Public any suspicions and displeasure with the process dissipate.
We must expect our successful local Entrepreneurs, especially those who gained special privileges to be sole-sourced, to do more to expand their business to help the Nation's Economy benefit from the multiplier effect to a significant extent. That is how their role in building Ghana would be most recognized and appreciated.
God Bless our local Entrepreneurs and their honest partners!!
Long Live Ghana!!!
