We choose schools base on the principles of that particular school and if we cannot accept those principle, what force us to go to that school? Commonsense. Commonsense folks.

Muslims can opt out of mission schools and go to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan or anywhere else and who cares?

Muslims have been attending these schools for years and why are they now complaining? What has changed suddenly and how many Muslims have been converted into Christianity due to the principles of the mission schools?

If a Muslims lady is told to take her hijab off to take a passport picture for clear identification, what is the big deal? Will the removal converted that person into something or it is pure ignorance and stupidity?

These and many other schools parents would want their Children to go. Very school government schools are really good. A majority of them are rubbish. The Government can stop the subsidies we will still pay to send our Children there because of quality.

Just tell these advocates for segregation in religion in Ghana that they are advocating for something unknown in Ghana, even before 1300 when the first Europeans visited the West Coast, and 1471 when they started trading in the south while the Muslims traded in the north. Remember what the Muslims did to Ancient Ghana and what the likes of Samori and Babatu did to West Africa. All others did not and have not raised an accusing finger at any Muslim, we love peace. I know Islam teaches peace, whence cometh these violents you're talking about? The Crusades and the Moors had their day in the north and Europe.
Please, allow peace to reign. I respect the mallams at the makaranta schools but I would not send my child to those schools for certain reasons. Why do you go to live in somebody's house and start dictating to the landlord knowing too well what the rules in there are? Do you think everybody like the dawn wake-up calls made on loud speakers? I Love whistling but my grandpa who was a Muslim stopped me from it after 6pm, though I am a christian, I obeyed.

Give the schools back to their owners, after all no compensation was paid before the takeover; and I don't think these Christians cannot manage their schools now. Government must hands off this religious thing in Mission schools or help the moslems to build theirs if government feels it must help one religion to advance their faith. If things go on this way religion will become a major issue in everything in Ghana as is done in Nigeria and we will see terrible consequences.

The Churches are mere custodians of the schools; the schools don't belong to them. The schools were founded by early European missionaries to evangelize. In post-independence Ghana, the sole purpose of the schools is national development, not propagation of Christianity. The government has largely taken over the financial burden of the schools, and they have become public institutions which must be open to all citizens of the land. If you take away the bigotry, nobody gets hurt when Muslim students are not co-opted into Christian worship, but are rather allowed to observe their own worship.

On "makaranta", I have to say you are very ignorant... go learn some real history. It's early Muslims who saved Europe from the Dark Ages and provided the knowledge that is being taught today in the so-called mission schools: trigonometry, algebra, geometry, earth science, medicine, botany, chemistry, the solar system etc.

There is a real issue: Muslim students are being oppressed in our schools, the government in doing its duty issues a directive for it to stop... how is this an issue. Yet you bigots decide to play politics with the matter because of your dislike for the government. It looks like even if Jesus himself comes down and is wearing anything resembling NDC colours, you bigots and your bishops will oppose and crucify him the second time.

If their beliefs and culture are not in congruence with our constitution it must be pointed out to them and if they are not prepared to conform then they must fold out. Parents or wards have enjoyed the freedom to choose one over the others knowing what each stand for. Some of the graduates from these mission schools go on to develop themselves Reverend Minsters and workers those Faiths, based on the foundmental inculcate into them when they are students in the said schools. This is the pricipal reason for the establishment of mission schools. One cannot expect an aspiring Reverend Minster of Methodist or any of the Orthodox Churches to have his totuladge education at T. I. Ahmmedia Secondary school. So as moslems you have the choice to send your children or attend SECULAR OR YOUR OWN MISSION SCHOLES. GOD will save Ghana. AMEN.

Educate our children in science, maths, engineering and technology to liberate our nation instead of staging religious crusades in our schools. Religion has no future in the world because many people are beginning to realize how foolish we have been for centuries, believing in a mythical God and nonexistent heaven. Let's care for each other as humans and as Ghanaians first. Religious tolerance is more important for our national unity and progress. Let's learn from other animal species. Other species of animals care for each member of their own kind for their collective survival. To accomplish this goal, no student should be coerced to worship in any mission or govt school. The freedom and rights of the each student must be fully respected by these archaic bishops and imans. Children have rights and that is what is being overlooked by the adults in this debate. Religion is a curse to mankind, causing most of the wars in the world for more than 2000 years and still counting. And after all religion is not real!

Ghana is not a Christian country and the constitution so pronounced Ghana as a secular state, therefore there should be no imposition of any religion by any faith whatsoever. If the Catholic wants to promote their catholic practices then, they should establish new schools fully funded by the catholic and insist on catholic practices. As it stands in today's Ghana there no fully funded christian second cicle insitution in Ghana therefore those rules must be ignored absolutely.

I am the type who cannot stand the maltreatment against the poor and vulnerable in society and so I would not accept any lucrative job in a country like Saudi Arabia where women are looked down upon. If Muslims want their rights to worship their god they should also contribute the money they spend on the annual Hajj ritual to build good schools for Muslim students and stop the noise about religious freedom. In my days, I had a lot of moslem classmates in my Christian missionary school and every single one of them took part in our early morning masses before start of classes.

In post-independence Ghana, the sole purpose of the schools is national development, not propagation of Christianity. The government has largely taken over the financial burden of the schools, and they have become public institutions which must be open to all citizens of the land. If you take away the bigotry, nobody gets hurt when Muslim students are not co-opted into Christian worship, but are rather allowed to observe their own worship.

On "makaranta", I have to say you are very ignorant... go learn some real history. It's early Muslims who saved Europe from the Dark Ages and provided the knowledge that is being taught today in the so-called mission schools: trigonometry, algebra, geometry, earth science, medicine, botany, chemistry, the solar system etc.

There is a real issue: Muslim students are being oppressed in our schools, the government in doing its duty issues a directive for it to stop... how is this an issue. Yet you bigots decide to play politics with the matter because of your dislike for the government. It looks like even if Jesus himself comes down and is wearing anything resembling NDC colours, you bigots and your bishops will oppose and crucify him the second time.

Now, on Muslims diffusing mathematical principles to Europe in mediaeval times. It is true that Arabs played an important role in the development of mathematical systems like Algebra and trigonometry. Indeed, algebra was named after the Arab scholar Al Khwarizmi. But he himself put together concepts attributed to the Greek mathematician, Diophantus. In fact the meaning of "algebra" is bringing together broken parts. The Arab scholars of the 9-10th century did not invent Mathematics. They built on Greek and Indian mathematical concepts. Mind you, Greek colonists had founded cities like Byzantium (modern day Instabul) that would later lie in the heart of the Islamic world.

Finally, granted that Islam spread math and science to Europe, why have math and science become haram to many Islamic sects, while the same now takes centre-stage in European civilisation? It shows just how ignorant and stupid Islam got in making the Quoran the only thing worth learning. When the Church made the Bible the only thing worth learning, Europe entered the Dark Ages. That's how come Arab scholars now take the credit for knowledge that already existed in Europe centuries before. Now, Islam is in its Dark Ages!

I participated in all school activities except communion which we had the permission to attend Church in town to receive. We the Catholics never gave the school headaches and the school reciprocated.

Religious schools are a great place to discover oneself.

This happened in Bolga in 2009 when the Muslims there thretened Mark Woyongo to build their mosque for them because they claim the NDC used muslim votes to come to power. In year 2000, the muslim community in Ghana threatened mayhem if the Ghana Statistical Service does not massage census figures to make Muslims look majority in Ghana. The question then is, is the Muslim god so feeble and cheap that he always wants government assistance to survive.

Just as Christians can't tell Muslims how to worship in their schools, so can Muslims not dictate how worship and rules should be applied in Christian school. It's about choices. One need not send their wards to schools that belong to Catholics, Presbyterian, Anglican or Methodist Churches or denomination. It's plain and simple. Stay out of these school and don't try to foist your will on them in order to cause confusion. I wrote this last week advising non-Christians not to cause a stir in schools. Freedom of worship doesn't force people to enroll where they don't feel comfortable to belong.

Why then must Christian schools allow their Christian principles to be trampled upon by Muslim students? Muslims are happy that they have their Thid Largest Mosque very close to St. Peter's Baslica in Rome, yet they will burn the whole world if an attempt is ever made to locate a Church in Mecca. That is how unfair the balance of tolerance is between Islam and Christianity. If Muslim students cannot comply with Christian principles they should just leave the Christian institutions. Just stand there and do not participate. However you MUST be PRESENT at assembly because that is where the WHOLE SCHOOL IS at that particular time. SIMPLE. At a convenient time say during the breaks, Muslims can gather and face Mecca for prayers. Muslims want Ghana government to sponsor Hajj operations. Muslims always want government to build their mosques for them. This happened in Bolga in 2009 when the Muslims there thretened Mark Woyongo to build their mosque for them because they claim the NDC used muslim votes to come to power. In year 2000, the muslim community in Ghana threatened mayhem if the Ghana Statistical Service does not massage census figures to make Muslims look majority in Ghana. The question then is, is the Muslim god so feeble and cheap that he always wants government assistance to survive.

OIC means Organization of Islamic Countries. They have member nations across the globe and Prez Mahama is seriously working hard to send Ghana to OIC's Observer Status so that he can get some funding to buy votes in the Zongos and other Muslim communities since such funds are only allowed to be spent in such places. One of the conditions needed to qualify to the OIC Observer Status is to scrap Christian mission schools. Ghanaians must be careful since a similar thing happened in Nigeria under the military regime of Gen Babangida and it brought a lot of chaos in that country and collapsed their secondary school education. Ghanaian Catholic Bishops should please contact Bishop Jatau of Kaduna State of Nigeria he has anti-dotes to some of these things.

I lived closer to a zongo and nearer a Muslim community in western region: I tell bro, I wish I had the same freedom Muslim friends enjoy (when they come to my area); when I rather go to their zone a different story (only God knows what they even think of me). And amazingly for Muslims schools don't even venture to propose any idea contrary to Islam(how much more claim to change it) while their compatriots enjoy mosques in Christian schools.

Is it because christians have chosen to invest in formal education and Muslims have rather chosen to invest heavily in tourism to Mecca? Stop the nonsense. This is the attitude that collapsed secondary education in Nigeria. In Nigeria today good secondary schools are found in Christian dominated states like Kwara,Plateau, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti,Lagos, etc. Any other good school you see is either owned by religious bodies or private individuals. This came about due to this same agitations about Muslim rights in missionary schools which forced some state governors to confiscate all missionary schools within their domains and renamed them after Muslim leaders. Today those schools are pale shadows of themselves.

If the govt cant cope it can withdraw its sponsorship in those schools and with Jesus on our side those schools will perfectly function. My only suggestion is that the muslims too must put up more schools so that they can have their rules applied. I live in Kumasi an area close to zongo n only God knows they those kids dress to schools. in most of the cases u cant even differentiate them

we must simply obey the rules in the schools we attend lest a time will.come when the traditionalist will request for the pouring of libation n mounting of idol figures in.schools. The GES has it code of dressing n that must be followed by all. if care is not taken, the kinda of dresses pupils n students wil.start wearing to.school all.in the name of religious believes wil leave much to.be desired.

I am a muslim, I attended Church of Christ and Methodist primary and secondary schools, attended morning devotions, study a bit of bible knowledge as a course.That has not change my faith to become a christian.
that rather increase my understanding of christianity as against my christian school mates who depend on media and hear-say about Islam.
For me what is important is teach our kids about islam and how to become a good citizens devoid of corruption, deceiving, telling lies, back-bitting e.t.c.
My national service mate (a Catholic-Eric) who stayed with me for year at Sefwi Wiasso, was surprised to find out that muslims dont kills humans. He confessed to me that he only observed me trying to pray 5 times a day, even if i missed the time of prayers.
So please lets focus on more important issues.

It is not possible. There is a saying that when you get to Rome you do what the Romans do. Nobody forced muslims to go to Catholic schools. We have plenty schools founded by our muslim fraternity so if the principles are too harsh and anti your religion in these schools do not go there. That is why you hardly find Christians attend an Islamic school. I have a friend who attended TI Ahmaddiya Sec School at Gomoa and by the time he completed school he nearly converted into a muslim because he was never allowed to practice his faith. I beg our muslim brothers not to see this as discrimination but their choice to attend those schools is what is paramount. There is a saying that if you do not want monkey tail to touch you you do not go to a monkey dance

However, it seems that the muslims now want to usurp the authority of the catholic principles something a muslim school will never allow to happen: infact it will be a "haram". So the catholic is simply saying: look here you are not force to join any christian rituals but to claim that "we" Catholics should stop the schools core principles just for muslims to be comfortable will beat the purpose why the school was established the first place, just as a muslim school will not change the schools rules for a christian simply because he ( the christian) is not comfortable. First of all according to the time line of biblical prophecy the slavery was bound to happen but God with his abundant mercies through this heinous experience in human history (which is really not the first time slavery ever existed) patiently brought his servants to the shores of Africa to preach the Good news of salvation to even us. In other words God who even being the King of Kings allowed His chosen people Israel (to be enslaved by the Egyptians) did not see it robbery to turn the tides of history to bring about salvation (even your salvation if you believe) to our darkened part of Africa. So what do we learn here: Men with their wicked machinations having Satan as their king(for the heart of the man is wicked everyday; who may know it, said the prophet Jeremiah) plan to conquer the world but little did they know that they were fulfilling what is written of God. For instance a thief goes to still from a rich man; coincidentally the rich man happens to have the same name as the thief and your interpretation of this scenario is that either of the two should be arrested without due diligence because they have the same name (I know you're going to find it hard to understand in which case you should refer to lines 3 and 4 of this reply). Let me bring it to your level of understanding, a resemblance of two things does not mean they are the same; is like saying Mohammed kissed the Kaaba and so that means according to your reasoning Mohammed worship idols and another person somewhere in the world will reason that mohammed is a Buddhist because buddhist kisses objects and therefore worship idols. You noticed that Jesus is exhorting his followers to be peacemakers and they will be the children of the Living God. And Jesus said he came to his own and his own received him not why because his is the light of the world and the world rejects this light so it cannot be perfect if Jesus did not say I came to divide (again why) because within a family, a group of people, a community, a nation some will believe in Him and most will reject him. In which case he perfectly brings about the dividing line those who believe in him and those who don't even though they're of the same family, country etc and in all these situation of a division he exhort his followers to be the peacemakers even if they are victimized that is why you find christians peaceful much much more than muslims (because they understand what it is to be a child of The Living God "YHWH" not ALLAH.

THe catholic schools should not forget that it is the moneys the students pay and the support they get from government that is still keeping them to run the schools if the students quit how will they make their returns, the schools are profit making business not a charity organization so they should tone down their voices and seek peaceful solutions, they should remember they work under rules and regulation that govern the country, this is a reason why they loose the youth at their churches to other churches.

in case he does not know, Muslims are paying for the services they are rendering in their schools. for that matter, he cannot forcefully demand us to worship what he worships.

besides, majority of those institutions are being managed by the government which simply suggests that freedom of worship and religion must be equally guaranteed.

moreover, there wasn't any bond or consensus between the students and the school at the point of admission as to whether they'll forcefully attend church services or not. why then is his problem if Muslims are refusing church services.

is he going to take it lightly should one of his members abandon Catholicism for any other Christian faith denomination? we are equally not going to take things lightly anymore because our tolerance are taken to be our weakness.

if they want peace we'll give it to them but if chaos is what they want, we're equally up to task.

When the Christians were contributing money to build there schools were was John Mahama, Muntanka, Omane Boamah and the NDC. Churches must take back their schools and allow the Muslim to vote for their NDC and their president. It is a shock for the President to takr sides in this matter, it is rather unfortunate.

I am a product of Ghana Catholic schools and I am a Catholic. In all the schools I attended in the '70s and '80s, it was always ALRIGHT for non-Catholics to be excused from all Catholic rituals. What has changed? There was always freedom of religion and worship. These Bishops seem to have lost their marbles, indeed!

I believe that the Ghana Catholic Church is under severe assault from within. There are many very bad and corrupt Catholic Bishops in Ghana today like the ones in Konongo-Mampong, Goaso, etc. Unless the Vatican gets rid of these failed Bishops, the Catholic church will continue to decline in Ghana. How can you have these Bishops that are so self-centered and continue to antagonize their fellow clergy and the congregation? All they care about is amassing personal wealth. How many cars and SUVs does one person need? These men must go for the sake of our once cherished church!
