In the '90s that was their main mobilising raison d'tre. I recollect I had an extended argument with Dr Kofi Ellison who claimed, just as many ignorant "these Akans", that the VR does not produce cocoa but benefits from the hard labour of Asantes! Hard labour of Asantes who were/are mainly share-cropping landlords until recent times? Had Polly hill not written the Migrant Cocoa Farmers of Southern Ghana? And had Frimpong Ansah not written the Vampire State, books in which they detailed cocoa production in Ghana since Gold Coast times, with tables to show where the cocoa harvests came from?

And you know what? The available statistics to me from around 1993 shows that cocoa add a mere 13% to agricultural GDP in total. When I get home I shall quote the precise figures from MOA for the various sectors. Roots and tubers add more GDP and thus income to farmers pockets than cocoa!

It is 'cos you didn't know that much of the border was re-demarcated to place parts of the former TVT into the Eastern Region, Northern Region and Upper East. Only a small section was added to the former British Togoland to form the present VR.

Even where the Volta wasn't within the
TVT, it was the border with the former Gold Coast, Ashanti and Northern Territories. Thus, if the TVT goes to Togo, then any dam would have to be fully shared by Togo, and Togo might not want so much of its land flooded for an aluminium smelter project in Ghana. In fact, Togo might as well have equal right to build the dam. It even agreed not to build a dam on river Oti which flows from Togo into the Volta in order not to deny water to the Volta and in exchange get power from Ghana. It has since then built a small dam on that river though.

We all want a united Ghana but if President Mahama does not want Akan Empire will generate and the rest will see, if they would be able to manage their own affairs.

Where this country is marching toward is very dangerous but create new beginning for others. NDC is a tribal base political party which not going to hold.

Akans need to be more educated about their resources and they will come together.

If Akans want to 'control' resources in the country they would need the support of other non-Akan citizens to vote them into Parliament in majority. Now, rather sadly, we are scaring off the very people whose help we might need to have that majority vote.

But by the way, what is even meant by "Controlling our resources"? When the Oil was discovered the only two private entities that got the most benefit out of it, upfront, are the partners of the EO-Group. These are Akans.

The Oboasi Gold Mines that became Ashanti-Gold or Ashgold as some would call it, have almost always been managed by predominantly Akan Executives. Meanwhile, it was an Akan Executive who led the sale of the Mines to the British Conglomerate in South Africa, and earning himself a Knighthood from the British Monarch as a consequence, and having enough bonus from the deal to become Ghana's first only Venture Capitalist sojourning in South Africa. Our Timber Concessions have mostly been owned and operated by Akans over the decades. Sadly, much of their earnings from exporting the Timber were either kept in safe havens abroad, with the collusion of corrupt Timber Marketing Officials among the now Forestry Commission. The rest of the Timber exploitation have been by our own local rogue illegal chainsaw lumber processors, leading to the near extinction of our Forests, accompanied by a host of environmental mess.

Ask yourself what has our Akan leaders done with such opportunities to help their own? Have you seen them building big businesses to even hire the ordinary Akans in their home areas? These few fortunate folks do not care to even reinvest their Capital gains in our Societies to spawn further economic growth.

Have you ever asked what our Traditional leaders who receive most, if not all, of the Royalties from our harnessed Natural Resources do with those funds to help their respective areas? Do these Chiefs even care to account for those Funds?

So, why don't you start with these few fortunate Akan leaders first? We used the revenues from our Natural Resources to build national infrastructural projects like the Akosombo, Bui, and Kpong Dams. Even though we are experiencing 'Dumsor, Dumsor' now, the Electricity from these Dams became available for all of us. Where else could we have built those Dams in Akanland? On River Densu or Pra or Tano?

The fact that a few non-Akan Presidents have not been performing to our expectations does not mean all non-Akans must be excluded from ever becoming Presidents. The fact that some Officials who are non-Akans are indulging in corruption to loot our coffers, do not necessarily mean we should forever exclude non-Akans from holding responsible positions. Such corrupt non-Akan leaders, too, have been cheating their own elsewhere. SADA is one such humongous scandalous flop of a Project that non-Akan Officials have been selfishly milking to the detriment of their own folks. They could not even ensure the "Nkomfem" (Guinea Fowls) they claimed to be raising with the SADA funds would even stay in Ghana. They claim the birds all flew to Burkina.

So, we must rest assured that it is not where the leader comes from that would necessarily guarantee us the fair share we deserve in the revenues or investments our Resources could generate. We only have to work harder to identify the very best individuals among us who would perform best to our satisfaction, regardless of where they come from.

There is ample evidence to prove that our ineptitude and greed that feed the corruption that we are enduring transcends all tribes. In these horrible times of pervasive Corruption that is sucking he lifeblood out of the Country's Economic system, all we need is a Justice System that would boldly apply our Laws to their last letter to prosecute and duly punish the guilty culprits, when we have incidents of misappropriation of national assets. We must as well have a Parliament that would curtail the period for which the indemnity of Presidents is applicable. In that case we could even prosecute a sitting President for various crimes including Corruption. That would deeply embed deterrence in our System to get Officials below the President also behave and perform well.

Our Council of State and Parliament must play greater roles in seeing to it that our revenues are distributed more fairly. Surely, areas where these resources originate must never be abandoned or neglected. In the course of harnessing these Natural Resources, we create more hazards that the locals have to deal with, and could have life-threatening consequences on them. For that alone, these local areas where the Natural Resources originate must be compensated fairly. I would also acknowledge that the Royalties paid to the land owners are also antiquatedly low in rates, and have not kept up with the rising prices of the products extracted. So, we must demand higher better reflective rates of Royalties.

In the end, it is how we use our Laws to force fair use of these revenues that matter most.

I do agree however though that people in those areas where these resources comes from must nevertheless have a say in how these resources are deployed to the common good of all.
now lets look at this; historically and even till date how many akans have been in charge of affairs managing or running business at ashanti- gold field company or any of the companies that have been involved in the production of these resources over the decades or even over the past century now? how many locals(akans) without any malice, have the requisite skills, knowledge and mindset to be engaged as managers or jobbers in those industry..? this can amply be attested to by the situation currently prevailing at the jubilee field where most of the top management persons or employees are not essentially from akan areas at all hence the call for local content in our oil and gas industry legal regime, which call is also in order..

They tried to kill Nkrumah because of this and insulted him and the people from the Western Region. Now that oil has been found in Nkrumah's Western region these NPP are beginning to respect them. This most unfortunate divisive assertion by Osafo Marfo, should that be proven to have been made by him, must send chills down the spines of our patriotic citizens. It further establishes the lingering relics of the UP mentality that Danquah was a proponent of that Ghana should not have a Unitary Government but a Federation. Now, we know why the Federalism idea was born among the UP folks in the first place.

Where is Dr. Bawumia? I hope he has ears to hear. If he does not listen well to understand fully the real intent of such assertions by the leading NPP member, he must as well concede that he is only being used as a charade for covering the incurable divisiveness among the folks he has teamed up with.

It must be well noted where Osafo Marfo made the comments and to whom he made them. That is the stronghold of Akufo-Addo's current support, and where the original idea of Federalism was born-- in Danquah. There seems to be an endemic principle among the Old Akyem Danquahists that only Akans (or even Akyems alone) must rule Ghana. Why can't these leaders learn from History? One would think the sordid, massive rejections of Danquah, Paa Willie, and Akufo-Addo by the electorate over the decades to be our President could be lessons for these leaders to change their mindset. But here we are again with this irrepressible canker among them buoying up to the surface of their Political campaigns. Does this not make more sense why former President Kufuor's faction of the NPP might have preferred Alan to Akufo-Addo for the Presidential candidate of the NPP?

Taking up the logic behind Osafo Marfo's assertions, we must emphasize that it is not unusual for owners of resources to be poor managers of the resources themselves, and to have them solicit or hire experts from less resourceful areas to manage the resources for them. But more importantly, if Ghana belongs to all of us, it does not matter who governs, so long as he or she does a good job at it. I would rather prefer living in a Ghana that may change her Presidential leadership on the basis of competence instead of where the incumbent hails from. It is Mahama's performance that must be considered for either retaining him or rejecting him. Not where he comes from. Akufo-Addo has no exclusionary natural right to become the President of Ghana, just by the virtue of coming from Akyem, or being an Akan.

We must be reminded of how our late non-Akan President, Dr. Liman, was derided as undeserving of the Flagstaff House or the Castle because he would be chewing and spitting Kola-nuts all over the place to trash them. That was an euphemistic way of saying only Akans deserve to rule the Country. And we know who were the loudest proponents of that unfounded, derogative notion.

Now, we hear the same sentiments alleged to have been expressed in much clearer terms by Osafo Marfo. And this is a guy who wanted to become a Flagbearer of NPP to eventually ascend the Presidency.

Well, he could not get up there to become our President but has thrown his full support behind another sharing similar sentiments...Akufo-Addo, who also made the 'Yen Akanfo de.."all die be die"..' ignoble utterances that he never apologized to Ghanaians for.

Why would we make a mistake of choosing anyone with that mentality to be the Nation's Head of State? I hate to point this out but it is necessary to note that the most outspoken Akyem Political leaders and commentators, from Akufo-Addo through Professor Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., are dragging the reputation of the good millions of Akyems into disrepute with such divisive, if not bigoted, pronouncements.

And why they would even do so at such a crucial period, so close to electioneering campaigns, beats my imagination. They are derailing the chances of NPP to recapture the Presidency, once again, despite the meager performance of the current NDC Administration.

That is a shame!!

Resources are only properly so called when we put systems in place to make profitable use of them. Until we make use of the fresh waters flowing into the sea "unused", are they resources? Not when all we do is to invite foreigners to exploit these "resources" for a pittance. How are helping ourselves to exploit these "resources"? What systems are we putting in place for such a purpose? There's a lot more to think about than just ownership issues. As the parable of the talents in the bible shows, it is not who owns, but use resources are put to that matters. So Ghanaians let us wise up please. Otherwise our generation will lose it all.

Osafo Marfo should show some responsibility and stop making incendiary, divisive, tribalistic comments which are unhelpful to our nation.

Osafo Marfo should come out and confirm or deny that he said what he is purported to have said. If he has, he owes the whole nation and unqualified apology, and should withdraw the foul vitriolic.

The NPP must then discipline him for bringing the party into disrepute. and also issue an apology to the nation.

The NPP council of elders has a lot to answer for. Which elders are these who will hear such divisive, tribalistic venom and not raise a finger?

NPP is committing electoral suicide by condoning such bile from senior members of the party who really ought to be more responsible in their speech.
