Please bear in mind that we sought Mr. Nana Akyea Mensah's (Odikro) permission to re-pulblish this, and he gave us his full consent.
Of course, I have been posting this and the one published yesterday on the COMMENT SECTION until some commentators/readers asked me if I could seek Mr. Nana Akyea Menshah's formal permission to re-publish them for the general readership.
I since agreed and sought out Mr. Nana Akyea Mensah's consent. And this is the outcome of our request to Mr. Nana Akyea Mensah (Odikro). I hope this does not breed any more misunderstanding. FOR THAT REASON EVERY CREDIT FOR RESEARCH AND AUTHORSHIP GOES TO MR. NANA AKYEA MENSAH (ODIKRO).

Where does this long narrative leave us Ghanaians, in the light of the present difficulties we are going through. We are contending with hunger, lack of electricity, inadequate medical services and a host of problems we are not supposed to face after these long years of "independence".These two stupid political camps in Ghana think they have the right to mess up our lives. One day,one day in the not too distant future,Ghanaians will get to a point where their eyes will be opened and then we will find a way to govern ourselves better. For now they can play soccer with the Nation but Ghana will rise again.

Dear Readers,
A reader who goes by the moniker (Akwasi Prempeh) attached following information to Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy's article "The Villification of J.B. Danquah Continues" posted on Ghanaweb, February 11, 2015.
Here it goes:
........................................................................................................................................................
Dr Arthur Kennedy writes: “There is no record of either the CIA station chief or CIA Director ever confirming that the CIA ever paid any money to Danquah or that he was a spy. Added to that is the fact that Danquah was never in a position to provide any state secrets to anybody. In other words, there is no iota of evidence backing the charge that Danquah was a CIA agent.”
Mahoney’s book titled JFK: The Africa Ordea l lm Africa was by the son of a late former diplomat, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ghana.
This is what Professor Mahoney wrote in his book (pages 184 - 185):
"The matter concerned Dr. J.B. Danquah, Nkrumah's opponent in presidential elections of 1960, who was released from prison a few months after Mahoney's arrival as ambassador. Danquah paid a visit one November day to the embassy to ask Mahoney why the FUNDS [my caps]his family had been receiving during his imprisonment had been cut off after his release. This was the first time that Mahoney had heard of the arrangement. After Danquah left, he summoned the CIA chief of station to ask why he had not been advised of the agency's association with Danquah. Dissatisfied with the explanation, Mahoney flew to Washington two days later and personally informed Kennedy about the matter.
The President reacted sharply to the news and told Mahoney that he had sent a letter to all ambassadors in May 1961 making it clear that their authority extended to all phases of embassy decision making. Kennedy then telephoned CIA Director John McCone and told him that he was sending Mahoney over to CIA headquarters and wanted the matter resolved immediately. The understanding that emerged from the meeting at Langley was that 'no undertakings of any kind, even remotely involving our situation in Ghana, would either be continued or launched without the ambassador's knowledge and approval'"(Ref 149).
Ref 149: "This account is drawn from OHWPM [Oral history of William P. Mahoney], JFKL [John F. Kennedy Library] and William P. Mahoney Jr. to the author, July 21, 1977.
What work did Danquah do for the US Embassy in Ghana to receive funds that had been cut off about which he complained to Ambassador Mahoney?
Dr Kennedy you will be naïve to think that the CIA or its agent will confirm or deny paying any money to Danquah or anyone else in Ghana.
Documentary evidence reveals that the United States and Britain first discussed the possibility of a coup d'état in Ghana in the spring of 1961, prior to John F. Kennedy's June 29 letter that committed the United States to fund the VRP. The Kennedy Administration further explored the possibility in the fall of 1961, after Nkrumah's trip to the East and China, and the President's issuance of National Security Action Memorandum (NSAM) No. 96, stating his desire to review the decision to fund the VRP. During both of these periods, documents that make reference to a possible coup have been heavily censored, or removed from files, opening the possibility that the United States did far more than discuss the coup in theory. The Administration apparently hoped that their support for the Volta would provide assistance to the people of Ghana, and that the Nkrumah administration would soon be replaced. References to a coup continue throughout 1962-1963 during bilateral talks with the United Kingdom and in CIA assessments of the political climate in Ghana. In October 1962 an offhanded reference in a telegram from the British High Commission in Lome, Togo to the British Foreign Office in London notes contacts between Americans and Ghanaian exiles. Ghanaian exiles in such contacts included Obetsebi Lamptey and R. E. Amponsah among others.
Nkrumah always suspected CIA involvement with exiles in Lome, and the British were certainly aware of these contacts. Documents in 1962-1963 also attest to the meetings between the United States, Britain and exiled Ghanaians K.A. Gbedemah and K.A. Busia, both of whom sought Western aid for their ill-conceived plans to stage a coup in Ghana. The sum of these leads suggests a longer history of US attempts at subversion in Ghana than currently declassified documents reveal. The attempts at subversion included economic sabotage through, for example, US.UK and France led orchestrated rapid fall in the world price for cocoa, and US withholding of economic aid to Ghana.
In the Cold War atmosphere of the 1960s and the alleged growing Soviet influence in the newly independent African countries, the Volta River project was to be used by the U. S. with the help of British “Prime Minister Macmillan in attempting to turn Nkrumah in a reasonable course.” (Notes for Record: National Security Council Meeting on Volta Dam, The White House, 12/5/61, p. 1.) Irving L. Markovitz (Power and Class in Africa, Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1977, p. 80.) writes that: “Since his pro-Algerian independence speech as a senator, President Kennedy has been considered as a friend of nationalist regimes. He pursued a foreign policy that was disguised by its sophistication from the crude Dulles-Eisenhower era. Yet he sent several missions to Ghana headed by men such as Henry McLoy, Head of the Chase Manhattan National Bank, to find out whether Nkrumah was or wasn’t a communist.”9 Following the Cuban missile crisis, Nkrumah was considered “a Castro” rather than “a Nasser,” and it was felt that if the U. S. “should go ahead [to fund the project] we ought to get something in return” (“Imperialism and the Volta Dam,” West Africa, 3/31/80, p.520).
Some African leaders like Liberia’s William Tubman, Ivory Coast’s Houphouet-Boigny, Nigeria’s Tafewa Balewa and Ghana’s K. A. Gbedemah and K. A. Busia lobbied against U. S. funding of the Volta scheme. Busia was the leader of opposition in the Ghana Parliament at the time Ghana was negotiating with the U. S. for funding. He testified before the U. S. Internal Security Sub-Committee against U. S. support for the project. His testimony was released with other documents under the title “Is U. S. Money Aiding Another Communist State?” with a three-page introduction by Senator Dodd on July 15, 1963. Busia became Prime Minister of Ghana (October 1969-January 1972) after the CIA-backed military coup overthrew Nkrumah’s government in February 1966. These African leaders were not opposed to the imperial design of the Volta scheme, they wanted Nkrumah chastised by U. S. withdrawal; otherwise, they “would feel indignant that Ghana had been accorded the priority in assistance which they believed they had earned.”11 But the U. S. reasoned that these African leaders who opposed Nkrumah “would have to realize that U. S. backing for the Volta project would be needed to counter-balance Ghana’s increasingly close relations with the {Soviet] Bloc.”12
It is evident from the above discussion that from the very inception of the Volta River project the industrialization of Ghana was not the concern of the British and U. S. governments and the aluminum companies involved. Britain was more interested in harnessing Ghana’s water and mineral resources to meet Britain’s aluminum needs. The U. S. government wanted a vehicle to carry out its Cold War against the Soviet Bloc. Ghana became a pawn in the hands of external forces (THE EYES OF THE WORLD WERE WATCHING: GHANA, GREAT BRITAIN, AND THE UNITED STATES, 1957-1966 by Mary E. Montgomery. Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2004).
Also, in a statement before the United States Committee on Foreign Affairs, then Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, G. Mennen Williams explained: "... it is our estimate that in the long run there are favorable factors that will prevail. This is an area where the British developed a very soundly based civil service, a well-trained military... I think when you put the thing in balance, that over the long run we could hope for a government which would at least be non-aligned" (Allen and Johnson, 1970, p. 263). What a prophecy! A month after power from the hydroelectric plant was switched on, Nkrumah's government was toppled by the "well-trained military."

I must say both writers have presented us with well articulated and "interrogated" pieces backed by references. The latter day UP revisionists are truly exposed!
But one pint of query. I am not aware of K.A. Gbedemah opposing funding for the VRA project, being the main person who paved the way for the securing the interest of such a support way back in the late 1950s when on a visit to the US and was exposed to a racist incidence. This reached the papers and President Eisenhower invited him to the White House and KA took the opp. to inform him about the VRA Eisenhower then invited Kaiser and the rest is history.
If KA turned around to lobby against continuing US participation after going into exile in Oct. 1961, I am honestly not aware of that.

Another ignorant and bigoted dzimakpla. There is no trokosi where I come from in the VR. Trokosi is limited mostly to Adangbe clans within Eweland and where they settled and became dominant culturally. Even Ada Foah areas were settled by Ewes before the Adangmes arrived as fugitives from the Akwamus. That's even admitted by C.O.C. Amate in his virulently anti-Anlo book "The Making of Ada". Idiots like you don't know that.
I wasn't trying to support Gbedemah but just to query a claim and provide information. Now that I am home, I can supply all and sundry with a full quote on how support was secured for the VRA Proj.
This quote is taken from the biography of KA by Prof. Amenumey's Outstanding Ewes of the 20th Century: Proflies of Fifteen Firsts, Volume !, commissioned by Organisation for Research in Eweland (ORE) p. 82:
"It is quite clear that clear that but fir Gbedemah the Volta River Project would have had a different outcome. In October 1957 he visited the United States after having attended the Commonwealth Finance Ministers' Conference in Ottawa, Canda. He denied service at a roadside restaurant on account of his skin colour. Subsequently he commented on the incident at a lecture to the students of Maryland State College and the US newspapers and President D. Eisenhower and Vice-President Richard Nixon, all heard about it. President Eisenhower invited him to breakfast at the White House in Washington and Gbedema seized the opportunity to canvass the Volta River Project. He was able to convince both the US President and Vice-Preisdent about the viability of the project. President Eisenhower asked his Vice-President Nixon to arrange American help. Consequently, Edgar Kaiser was invited to review the project. It was a result of that review that the American support was secured for financing the project and Kaiser Aluminium and Reynolds Metal came to establish s smelter in Ghana to provide a viable market for the power produced by the dam".
Now, everything claimed above can be verified. How come then Gbedemah could be opposing the Proj. after Oct 1961, when commitments were already made years earlier?
Personally, I wish Gbedemah hadn't secured American support and the Russians had built Akosombo Dam for us, just as they built the Aswan Dam for Nasser and Egypt. The review done for Kaiser killed Nkrumah's goal to develop a fully integrated smelter using our own bauxite deposit, etc., etc. Ghana lost on the deal badly!
I HOPE I'VE REMOVED A BIT OF YOUR PHENOMENAL IGNORANCE, FOOLISH MAN! I SHALL DEAL WITH YOUR BIGOTRY LATER.

As for you Nkrumaists, you are fanatics of impressionism and not students of broad principles of logic or reasoning that will lead you to the ultimate truth. Truth to you comprises ideology, hearsay, idolization, hero worshipping, shibboleth and sheer subservience to others' views and writings. No education has enabled you to think beyond what somebody else has indoctrinated you to believe with childlike devotion.
That is why it is possible for a fine mind like yours to spend time insulting a person who was imprisoned without charge or trial and who died in the prison of the Great Deceiver. Elsewhere, analytical minds will be questioning why a person could be imprisoned without trial at all, or why he should be allowed to die in prison and be insulted in death. That kind of broad principles of logic and reasoning is what we need to enable as to unmask Sasabonsam Kwame Nkrumah, the most evil person responsible for the backwardness of Ghana and African nations. When he had the opportunity to lead, the evil genius led all of Ghana and Africa into the palpable darkness from which we are struggling to escape.
Fortunately today, Nkrumah has no leadership philosophy in Ghana. His brutal dictatorship is cast into the dustbin of history, never to be resurrected again. And his motley crowd of dimwits have their voices perpetually drummed out by the great spirit of the Martyr for the true freedom and independence of Ghana and Africa, Osagyefo Dr. J.B. Danquah is supposed to be a CIA "asset" because a son of a former U.S. Ambassador, who was 10 years old when the alleged activities with the CIA occured, wrote about this in a book several years later? Are we also supposed to admit such evidence and present it before a jury because Odikro reported this in an article, Francis? This is getting absurd and I will not waste my time commenting on your articles anymore. As Kwame Apentuah amptly put it. " Kwame Nkrumah is a homosexual and my father who was a top CPP official was his partner. I was not born at the time, but I am a lawyer with a JD from the Univerty of Michigan an an LLM from Havard". Is my assertion of Nkrumah's homosexuality probative and admissible?
Francis, you are not helping your course in relying on tripple hearsay evidence to justify the incarceration of Danquah by Nkrumah without due process. I guess this was all Nkrumah had on Danquah and explains why the latter was imprisoned without trial. Nkrumah knew Danquah would have been exonerated if he had been tried. This is getting embarrassing, Francis.

If you claim Prof. Francis is not helping his [cause] in relying on hearsay, then what must we say about your parodic portrayal of a traitorous bomb throwing anarchist and ritual murderer, JB Danquah, as a hero.
You see, the best thing Dr. Busia's family has done to preserve his memory is to let sleeping dogs lie. Busia was a fugitive and killed school children and market women at CPP rallies jointly with JB Danquah in their mindless bomb throwing escapade. But nobody is in a position to comment on Busia's atrocities and callousness because his family is not making him to be what he is not.
History has not been kind to JB Danquah because he wrote his own history by his deeds, and no Akyemkwaa of any substance, like me, wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole, except those who are oblivious of his life story. This is my response to INXS (as per Paul Amuna's article). INXS has been doing worse than what he/she accuses others of. Here is my response to him/her:
You still have not said anything substantive by way of verifiable evidence, and yet telling others "both sides are arguing out of context." I don't know that statement actually means.
Did Nkrumah and the CPP rig the elections in Akyem Abuakwa Central constituency when Danquah lost to his relative Aaron Ofori Atta, who later became a Minister for Local Government/Minister for Justice under the CPP? I believe we have to be extremely careful to say anything at all when we lack provable or verifiable evidence for our hyperbolic claims.
What does your subjective and unsubstantiated view say about your own misplaced context?. This is one thing I hate.
I was not expecting to read this subjective, unsubstantiated commentary from you which means you have nothing substantive to add to the debate:
"And one thing too. Rigging may not have been the decisive factor in Nkrumah's victory but, yes, there certainly was rigging. It will be difficult to argue there was not. There was rigging even when the British were looking over our shoulders. I doubt if our country has ever held any elections in which there was no rigging - up till today."
Saying "I doubt if our country has ever held any elections in which there was no rigging-up till today" is no evidence." It means your are arguing from a standpoint of emotion rather that of rational substance. Please avoid this if you can.

By the way, what did we ever receive from the Soviets, Francis?

You are moving too far with so many trivialities. First of all, the funds Ghana received from the Soviet doesn't make Nkrumah KGB agent. I don't know how any intelligent person will debate that. Second, Nkrumah was fighting his own battle rather that meddling in the cold war. He was fighting for the freedom and dignity of the Blackman and not for the Soviet. Can't you people get this than the Whiteman's discourse? Let's pause and think for a second about Nkrumah and his dreams. If his book justify his overthrow, tell us about the justification for the slavery, colonialism and the cruel racism of our time both at the global and at the individual level. I must be honest with you and I am prepared to debate you that Nkrumah has no flaws as you asserted unless you want to run away from definitions. If you have the 100th of the mental strength of Nkrumah you will be doing something more fruitful than using trivial issues to nail the very person who has made majority of us tasted what we called education today.

Dear Kwadwo,
You know me very well enough to conclude that your JD from the University of Michigan and LLM from Harvard mean nothing to me.
Nothing from all your commentaries I have read on Ghanaweb so far separates you from the general commentator with an average education! Please let us stop this "childish" thing about degrees. I hope I am not construing you out of context!
Going to Harvard and the University of Michigan is not proof of anything. What do they prove, really? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Please deal with the substantive issues and stop flashing Harvard/University of Michigan at me. It will not wash.
Having said that, so far you have not given me anything, not an iota of counter narrative, substantive to counter Richard Mahoney's and Odokro's substantive and solid arguments.
Did you provide any substantial proof, if at all, calling the authenticity of Danquah's alleged letters to Nkrumah published here on Ghanaweb, into question? You didn't. Yet you swallowed the contents of the letters wholesale! At least, this is not what your legal background has taught you over the years.
Besides, I don't need legal training to teach me certain basic things about life. So, unless I am not taking your statements out of context, please don't bring up questions of degrees. They mean nothing to me.
I have taught myself many things in life degrees could not have taught me. And what if everybody should be discussing his/her degrees on Ghanaweb? What would that do for anyone? In other words, what has or would your degrees do for me as a person? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Don't ever think I am one of those cowards who see lawyers and run away. No...no...no...no! I have what it takes to engage any lawyer on Ghanaweb and anywhere for that matter, regardless of his/her chains of degrees!
Again I hope I have not taken your commentary out of context, in which case you might want to explain to me what exactly you meant by that cheap shot of yours!
I read your "YOU MISUNDERSTOOD" comments to NTIKUMA but I still don't understand how that relates to Richard Mahoney's and Odikro's arguments. It practically says nothing or refutes what the two (Richard and Odikro) are saying!
As an aside, how does it (your analogy) prove Danquah's letters are genuine (or fake)?
Hahahahahahahahaha...I got you there, eh?
Have a great weekend!

When you posted Odikro's piece corcerning Danquah having allegedly receiving support from the CIA, one Kwame Appetua made the following observation;
" Nkrumah was a homosexual and his partner was my father who was a top CPP official. I am a lawyer and received a JD from the University of Michigan and an LLM from Havard". He goes on to say that do those alphabets behind his name make his assertion of Nkrumah's alleged homoxuality credible? In other words, do claims made by a son of a former U.S. Ambassador in a book of events that occured when he was 10, make those assertion probative? This is what we call hearsay and it gets worst when Odikro repeats them in an article as gospel truth. Kwame Appentuah was expecting more from you and I agreed with him.
What you and Odikro are doing is relying on tripple hearsay evidence to prove a case and in a court of law, such evidence are inadmissible because they not reliable. The reference of those schools and the degrees are to illustrate that you should not rely on the proponent of that evidence simply because of those variables. Junior Mahoney's story on Danquah and the CIA suffers similar evidentiary flaws.

SAS, a pity you didn't read any theory of political science to guide you in these things. What you are saying has no truth value, and therefore hollow, as no leader in newly indep. African countries had the capability and capacity to be a dictator, talk less of brutal dictator. Nkrumah was therefore no dictator. What did he ever dictate?
Fact is, Nkrumah secured his decisions through popular and parliamentary approval. He held a referendum to decide if Ghana shld become a republic, even if it was a foregone conclusion he'd popular support at the polls. Dictators don't do that.
To turn Ghana into a one party state, he held another referendum and got a resounding approval. As Fitch and Oppenheimer wrote, the opposition members crossed to the majority side amidst loud cheering and slapping of backs, showing that even the opposition accepted it. And as they pointed out too, the hansards did not show a subdued parliament but a very robust one. Yes, even Gbedemah went to Parliament to denounce Nkrumah before slipping into exile. In a dictatorship, he'd be picked up from the grounds of Parliament to jail!
You see, in Africa of the '60s where most areas and peoples are not touched by the presence of central govt (painfully it is the case for just too many areas and people), the most a leader could be is autocratic and authoritarian.
Was Nkrumah autocratic? Not much more than the colonial governor, whose
roles he simply assumed. I presume you on't also naively believe that Nkrumah inherited a functioning democracy from the British with the lowering of the Union Jack and the hoisting of the new Ghana flag on 6 March 1957! Democracy comes from years of political socialisation and acculturation.
Btw, when it comes to analysis of issues, you right-wig blokes can trump we pro-Nkrumaists. I wrote a rather very late comment to your previous article in an attempt to enlighten but it appears you haven't read it. Hence, this brutal dictator nonsense again. When even the coup makers never claimed Ghana was under a dictator but they staged the coup in order to stop a "creeping dictatorship"? Maybe you should call Nkrumah a "creeping dictator".:-) And btw, the one often credited as the local brain behind the coup, IGP Harlley, was married to one of my many aunties, a lawyer by profession.

Nkrumah, had several enemies including the Opposition and the US. They might have worked together to get rid of Nkrumah. But to rely extensively on hearsay evidence to establish Danquah as a CIA "asset" is patently unfair. The issue is not whether Danquah and others may have corraborated with the CIA , but whether there is probative evidence that he did. So far Francis and others have not been able to establish this. Mahoney Jr's book being quoted extensively proves nothing. That suggest why perhaps he was imprisoned without charge or trial. That is all I am saying, my friend.
