It would appear that those in control of the NDC, for the time being, were bent on excluding other bona fide members of the Party who may wish to lay democratic claims to who becomes the next flag bearer of the Party by excluding them even before the mortal remains of the demised President were interred. It is also symptomatic of how political party elites in Ghana and Africa worm their way into the confidences of persons perceived as likely to ascend to power positions for purposes of eventual personal economic gain at the expense of the generality of the mass of Party members and the Nation which every President swears to serve under the Constitution.

Concerned Ghanaian, why is that it is personal politics when somebody criticizes this NDC government? Which party do you want criticisms addressed to? Is NDC not the party in power? You say the country is going through difficulties but you careless about the fact that the poor and wicked decisions and actions by this government has created the difficulties. Are you aware of the never-seen-before wanton thievery and incompetence going on in Ghana? Millions and billions dollars of public money is going into the pockets of wicked, useless and hopeless politicians. The stakes are high for the country at the moment. People like you are blind and have no feelings for common Ghanaian citizens. Open you eyes so you can see. Open your heart so can you feel. Also use your head ok.

In conclusion, the President’s power to appoint the Chairman and Members of the EC is merely a ministerial one. The substantive power of appointment is assigned to the Council of State. The President shall act on the advice of the Council of State means the President is barred from the nomination, vetting and selection process. Those who framed the Constitution were keenly aware of the impropriety inherent in allowing the President, a political player, to play a critical role in selecting the political referee. Nevertheless, out of deference for the office of the President, the framers allowed him, as the Chief Executive Officer, the honour of “appointing” the candidate selected by the Council of State. In this case, all the President is required to do is to issue the appointment letter under the Presidential seal but no more.

Every and all attempts should be made to ensure the true independence of the EC which is accountable and responsive to the ideals, hopes and aspirations of the masses, and not to serve the whims and caprices of the political oligarchs who seek to buy the vote, the institutions and the office for their personal aggrandizement.
