Our experience with the quack neo-communists is that, they seize power unjustifiably through coups and counter coups, and Ghanaians only suffer dictatorship, tyranny, corruption and economic mismanagement under them. Being in power now for six years, the NDC has failed again to improve the economy simply because their fundamentals are wrong. In fact, they don't have what it takes to salvage the sinking economy.

Under normal circumstances, political parties are formed to produce leaders democratically. But in the case of NDC, a tyrant created the party with state power and resources to legitimize his illegitimate regime and cling to power fraudulently. NDC is therefore, an artificial and illegitimate party followed by stomach politicians and sycophants.

Most of the things he took credit for had been started by the British, our colonial masters. For instance Tema Motorway was on the drawing board when he took over and Akosombo Dam was not his brainchild. KNUST was established by Asantehene and the British. Surprisingly, most of the things he takes credit for were never initiated by him

Independence, for instance, was sought for by many and achieved under the aegis and cunningness of Kofi Nwiah, trickster and schemer extraordinaire. Well, all along I have been asking how and under what circumstances "Francis Kofi Nwiah" was able to change his name to "Kwame Nkrumah". I know that it is permissible for anybody to change his name anytime he or she wishes but it is strange and beyond comprehension for one to change his birthday from Friday to Saturday ie from Kofi to Kwame. This is what makes me suspicious of Kofi Nwiah or Kwame Nkrumah. He claimed that his date of birth was 21st September 1909. This day according to the 20th century Calendar was a Tuesday!!! So was Nkrumah born on a Tuesday, a Friday or a Saturday? We must find out what he was up to with all these very strange findings. He was indeed cunning and only preyed on the emotions of the Ghanaian masses. It was my wish that president Mills would set up a committee to investigate before declaring Nkrumah's "unknown" birthday a holiday.

When he took over we had trade surplus running into millions of Pound Sterling but when he was forced out we had a trade deficit of several million pounds sterling!! This was the result of bad governance. He should have been overthrown earlier than 1966. We all saw good governance under K4. To me K4 is the best president Ghana has ever had. Kuffour is the greatest. We thank Kotoka and Afrifa for stoping the dictator in his tracks. Ayekoo Kotoka and Afrifa. Kotoka AirPort should never be renamed.

"Secondly, you will recall that barely a month after our detention in the North in 1948 we were brought down to Accra and released to appear before a Commission of Enquiry set up to investigate the justice or otherwise of our arrest of our arrest and detention. We duly appeared before the Watson Commission and made history for Gold Coast and Ghana. It resulted in the finding that the Burns Constitution was outmoded at birth, with a recommendation that our country should attain its independence within ten years, and that a Constitutional Committee (the Coussey Committee) should be set up to lay down the foundations of such independence and the steps to be taken towards its attainment."

Danquah would not have written those lines knowing very well it entails risks of not being pardon by Nkrumah because it was a complete lie. Yes they were first brought to a bungalow in Tamale but Nkrumah was separated from the pack and put in a solitary confinement - a cell hut in Lawra. Secondly at the watson commission they disowned Nkrumah. So above could not have come from Danquah. It was as if he was shooting himself in both legs. Danquah is lazy minded but I don't think he is that dumb. Well I could be mistaken! who knows?

As no particulars of any kind were provided in the grounds for detention to indicate how the Government of Ghana came to formulate such a disgraceful charge against me, I spent in the prison here the greater part of January and February 1964 to write a review of the whole of my activities in "recent months" (roughly, from June 1962 [last release from detention] to January 1964). This writing was done by way of "Representations" in answer to the charge...

The chronology of events that led to their arrest have to be kept in sequence. These NPP Mate Mehu revisionists will not have their way as long as I live.

When Kwame Nkrumah was arrested in Saltpond 1948 with the rest of the pack due unrest in Accra they were first sent to Kumasi. There they spent three days and were later transferred on an 8 hour bus journey to Tamale.

They were placed in a bungalow at first but Kwame Nkrumah who was under special surveillance was separated from the pack 3 days later and taken to Lawra where he was put in hut cell and spent 6 weeks under solitary confinement. The rest of them enjoyed their dandy lifestyles. Since they - by this I mean the five of them including Danquah - were treated fairly well by their colonial captives; they all started blaming Nkrumah for jeopardizing their life’s.

These became apparent when Nkrumah was brought to Accra to join the other five. They disowned him much to his surprise. The Watson commissioners concluded that Nkrumah was largely to be blamed for the disorders. In their report, dated June 1948 which anyone of you forumers can access, they stated that” the UGCC did not really get down to business until the arrival of Mr. Kwame Nkrumah on 16 December 1947. That is CRUST and the TRUTH of the matter. Google the full report of the Watson commission.

When will Mate Mehu stop telling fat lies. Kwame Nkrumah built 5 star Nsawam prisons to make prisoners life much comfortable due to his own first hand experience at James Town prisons where he nearly served 2 years. Nkrumah won the 1951 elections even when he was a jailbird overwhelmingly. Nkrumah stood firm, you don’t bargain with terrorist. Period! Nkrumah pardoned Danquah twice. Danquah never kept his word. Once bitten twice shy.

Kwame Nkrumah has been vindicated by taking action against terrorist more that 50 years ago. The PDA which was preemptive in nature to safeguard our new nation was imported from Indian. It is today being applied by all nations fighting terrorism. The patriot act in USA and its UK version has seen a spate of Anti-terrorism legislation all over the world. Today in the 21st century there is detention without trial in GITMO on the Cuban enclave by a democratic state called USA. They even sent terrorist to countries where they knew very well that they will be tortured. Water boarding was the order of the day. The US president Obama recently condemned these actions by the CIA and FBI.

In fact, the liars even gives a lot away and if indeed was not written by Gabby but Danquah and actually reached Nkrumah, would have annoyed him so much he would not even responded to it considering they had planned many assassinated attempts on his life just because they could not beat him in genuine elections. When I asked you why Danquah was not put before a Court of law and tried before his imprisonment, I was not aware of the existence of such a letter. My comment was based on my legal training and my believe in due process.You evaded my simple inquiry with autorities you have read in an attempt to justify was Nkrumah did. In my world, there is no justification for arbitrary political imprisonment and this makes Nkrumah a dictator. You had responded that Danguah was a terrorist and Nkrumah was nice to Danquah while he was locked up and that Danquah should have faced a firing squad. Well, you are well read, but I find your assertions very disturbing as your own uncle, Air Marshal George Yaw Boakye, was summarily executed by by Rawlings and his AFRC posse without due process.
Nkrumah did well for Ghana, but some of us fault him for his abuse of human rights and his imposition of a one party state on Ghanaians. It will be breath of fresh if for once, you can write a critique of Nkrumah. I say this because majority of Ghanaians were apparently happy when he was overthrown.

There is nothing I see in this letter that incurs my sympathy. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Have you seen some of the letters Nkrumah also wrote to him?

We have records from the CIA that he was working with the CIA itself, British intelligence, etc., to overthrow Nkrumah. American sources have revealed to us how he (and others) planned to overthrow Nkrumah within a year (he told an American embassy official). He should have been hanged.

My series on the great Nkrumah and his profound ideas continues unabated. That is more important that this Danquah story. If there should be distribution of sympathy and mourning, it should go to those children and innocent men and women who died at the hands of the National Liberation Movement. Let us also remember that Danquah and Busia were the NLM’s two most respected leaders. We should also take into consideration the attempts on Nkrumah’s life.

Nkrumah will continue to stand tall among the greatest leaders of the 20th century. This sympathy for Danquah will do nothing to dethrone the unparalleled greatness and achievement of Nkrumah across Africa. And yes, I live in America where the Patriot Act is applied in ways not different from the ways the British used it in India (and the colonial government approved) and its subsequent deployment in the then-Gold Coast.

Go and ask the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay Prison Detention Camp? How long have some of them been kept there before being charged? How about America's involvement renditions of alleged terrorists to their home countries where they tortured? How about America and water boarding?

How many Ghanaians have been in prison for years in Ghana today that have not been charged? How many times did Nkrumah pardon Danquah and asked him to keep out of trouble? Why did Danquah want to overthrow Nkrumah with assistance from the CIA? Why did Danquah contribute to the establishment of a terrorist Organization (NLM) that killed so many innocent human beings? Why would Danquah defend the ritual murderers of his relative, Nana Akyea Mensah?

Again, have you forgotten that Danquah and Busia were part of the men and women that established the National Liberation Movement, a terrorist organization that went on to kill so many innocent men and women and children?

If you want to know more about JB Danquah and the CIA, you better start reading well-placed American politicians like William P. Mahoney, the American Ambassador to Ghana at the time, and former CIA agents like Stockwell (Go to the following link: www.seeingblack.com/x060702/nkrumah.shtml).

Get the two declassified US documents there and read all the works the writer mentions. You should add the book of Richard Mahoney, “JFK: Ordeal in Africa,” another well-placed American politician. Go back and read Dr. Kwame Botwe-Asamoah’s Ghanaweb six-part series on Danquah for additional verifiable sources. You will find some useful information there as well.

The title of the link is “DOCUMENTS EXPOSE U.S. ROLE IN NKRUMAH OVERTHROW.” Once you are done, look for the number of people the Protective Custody Detention (PCD), the National Liberation Council’s version of the PDA, killed. Have you guys made any plans to include the victims (and their letters in public discourse) who died as a result of the terrorism of Danquah’s and Busia’s National Liberation Movement? I don’t think Danquah’s life is more precious than the lives of these innocent victims.

This cheap shot by Gabby won’t go anywhere. Nkrumah is already among the best leaders of the 20the century. International awards keep coming his way. Don’t you see? Danquah is merely a shadow to the great Nkrumah. Now think of what would have happened to Danquah under the Patriot Act?

What role did Danquah play in the Positive Active, for instance? Was it not Nkrumah’s exclusive idea? Now Danquah is shamelessly claiming credit for the success of the Positive Action? Didn’t he and others reject Nkrumah after the Positive Action?

Please let us leave the “Man of the Millennium” to rest in peace. The bogus content of this letter will add nothing or take nothing from Nkrumah’s nonpareil legacy. Let us learn to continue to honor Nkrumah and to leave traitors like Danquah to the shadows of history. I guess the five assassination attempts on Nkrumah and the lives of Danquah’s victims are irrelevant. No wonder Danquah’s merely Nkrumah’s shadow. He is even lucky to be in Nkrumah’s shadow. Finally, If he was that “smart” and had all the organizational skills, why should he (and others) wait for Nkrumah to come down and to breathe life into the UGCC?

Actually it shows how evil Danquah was, at least to those of us who are familiar of his work with the CIA to overthrow Nkrumah, and his respected membership in the terrorist organization NLM, that, among other things, killed so many innocent people.

I have no pithy for Danquah at all. I would have done it over given the evidence at the time. The Americans and the British would have done the same too. Period.

In fact, those CPP members who had got into an altercation with certain opposition members (in Kumasi, I believed) were later tried and executed. How many of those, including Danquah and Busia, behind the formation and terrorism of the NLM did Nkrumah kill? As for Obetsebi Lamptey he was buried half alive. Nkrumah also died years later from poor health far away from home while still in political exile. The reason being Krobo had been tipping them off about Nkrumah's unjustifiable attempts to arrest them and place them in detention. Thus they owed him a lot of gratitude. If you have noticed, when Krobo himself died, the UP supporters were in attendance at his funeral even more than the CPP members as they, the CPP felt he had not supported Nkrumah after the coup

Some of them were never to work in their field of expertise again because no one would give them a job.

What do we do with dissenters and those we suspect to be 'subversive' today in the West or those with "terrorist connections"? They are detained without trial in the West. We have been struggling to close Guantanamo Bay, the icon of modern day detention without trial of PDA. We are not there yet.

What about the renditions through third party countries? Who is complaining about all this?

By the way, like the rest of us, I also want to know the full story behind Danquah's detention. It is clearly an issue that true historians who wish to know the actual truth and nothing but the truth, should seek to find. "Excerpts" from a letter from prison naturally arouses our sympathies, but do these "EXCERPTS" tell us the whole story?

Much as we want to dispel the 'demons of our past' and to move on, let us avoid "selective myopia" in our choice of making a case about what happened in our recent political past.

Of course, classified documents clearly show America's involvement in Nkrumah's overthrow. You might be aware of this fact.

Besides, JB Danquah and KA Busia were among those that established the Ntional Liberation Movement, which went on to kill so many people including children and innocent men and women.

The five assassination attempts on Nkrumah's life is usually ignored. In fact, Busia and Danquah were the two most respected leaders of the National Liberation Movement. People like Gabby don't care about the victims of the the NLM.

Also, books written by well-paced American officials (one a former CIA agent) and Wiliam P. Mahoney, the American Ambassador to Ghana at the time, have all shed light on JB Danquah's collaborations with the CIA.

Dr. Kwame Botwe-Asamoah's Ghanaweb six-part series on JB Danquah explores some of the questions (and sources) that are obviously excluded from the narrative.

Maybe these references may provide some of the answers you seek. In other words, you can start from your quest for some of the answers from the little I have given you!

We also know from that documentary that one Howard Bain of the CiA masterminded the overthrow and certainly with the help of the opposition. Even if Danguah was involved, all we are saying is that Nkrumah should have charged him for treason and put him on trial. Sadly, Nkrumah failed to do this and locked him up without trial . As it stands now no one, including you , can say without reasonable doubt that Danquah plotted to overthrow or kill Nkrumah. Delassified information are after the fact evidence that is why you are having a hard defending Nkrumah on this issue. He erred badly for trampling on the rights of Danquah and others. Like Rawlings, history will be unkind to him for imprisoning people without trial. Only a diehard Nkrumahist can defend this, Francis.
The fact that the U.S. has done this in its war on terror doesn't make what Nkrumah did justifiable or right.

Have you tried finding out how his (and his kingly relative Ofori Atta’s) dictatorial tendencies turned many Akyems against him in those days? Why would he defend known murderers (his relatives) of his relative, Nana Akyea Mensah?

On the other hand, I cite the Patriot Act because Western democracy (Western) is what some of you Western-trained professionals use as your standard of fairness.

In fact, I have listened to Gabby (and others) on Joy FM (and on other media) say Nkrumah should have learned from America rather than from using the PDA to detain his opponents (terrorists).

What law did America use to falsely imprison so many innocent African Americans, kill and brutalize African Americans, etc? Was America not a more brutal society than Ghana at the time?

Were America and the rest of the Western world not doing worse things to African Americans than the RELATIVELY fair treatment Nkrumah gave Danquah?

Was Danquah not warned for the first time and then asked to stay out of trouble? What do you think he did the second time? Why wasn’t Danquah’s wife rather than Danquah arrested?

Who was Danquah anyway? NOBODY! Besides, what did he have in mind when the NLM, a terrorist organization, he, Busia, and others came together to found?

What did Danquah say when the NLM started killing children and innocent men and women? Did he do anything to stop a terrorist organization he helped found from killing children, innocent men and women, and attempting assassinations on Nkrumah?

Why did he work with the CIA? What are we doing as a nation to include the victims of Danquah's and Busia's NLM (terrorism) in the national narrative? I hope you are not saying the life of the traitorous Danquah is more important than the lives of those children and innocent men and women?

Kwadwo, you have not said a single word about Danquah’s victims. Is it because you are a diehard Danquah-esque?

Did the PDA not come from the British? Didn't the colonial government in Ghana have its own version of the PDA before the same government approved the PDA which Krobo Edusei introduced in parliament?

Kwadwo, make time and read the link I sent you. The documentary you referred to does not say much Danquah and the CIA as per William Mahoney (I have watched it several times; it is why I never recommended it in the first place).

Meanwhile, one of Dr. Kwame Botwe-Asamoah's Ghanaweb articles on Danquah goes much deeper into this question as far as verifiable sources are concerned (See his book for more information). The documentary does not say much about this question. Dr. Botwe-Asamoah also reveals more sources that are not very much discussed in the public arena. Contact him and he will give you more information.

As for me I have no sympathy for Danquah. I will tell you most people around the world who know the facts share this opinion. I HATE TRAITORS. How can Danquah even claim credit for the Positive Action, Nkrumah's exclusive idea, in this letter?

That makes me question the authenticity of the letter's contents. Didn't he and the others reject Nkrumah after the Positive Action? Didn't he say he wanted Nkrumah to pay with his head when the colonial authorities imprisoned him (Nkrumah)?
Why is this letter now claiming credit for something Danquah eloquently distanced himself from? What kind of revisionist epistolary content is that this! Is the NPP doing this for sympathy votes in the 2016 elections? I tell you this will not wash. NPP needs a better campaign strategy than this. In other words, it can do better than this.

Kwadwo, I care less about Danquah. I am thinking of the victims of his and Busia's NLM!

Let's forget about this Danquah and concentrate on the living legacy of Nkrumah and Danquah's many victims and their families. Remember Danquah never did anything worthwhile for Africa and the world. It is Nkrumah who did and we better make sure the world continues to benefit from Nkrumah's great ideas. When it comes to Danquah, Kwadwo, let us concentrate on more serious matters.

I am deeply sorry but I feel nothing for Danquah. I feel more for Nkrumah (five assassination attempts including the Kulungugu bombing) and the children (plus innocent men and women) who died under the terrorism of Danquah’s and Busia’s NLM, and the victims’ families. This is more important in my humble opinion. The ideological children of Danquah should be grateful Nkrumah did more for their UGCC than the UGCC did for Nkrumah.

And it was not Danquah who brought Nkrumah to the Gold Coast as is sometimes alleged. Ako Adjei, Paa Grant, and Danquah wrote letters inviting Nkrumah to come down. But the credit for Nkrumah’s decision to finally return to the Gold Coast goes to the organizations he worked with in Britain. People are lying about this without knowing the historical facts.

The present and younger generation have been left in the dark about the truth and realities of life under a communist/socialist leaning brutal dictator who with the aid of a majority CPP Parliament declared Ghana a one party state and declared himself President for life. Can the younger generations who probably missed Rawlings version of dictatorship from 1979 imagine what life under a brutal dictator is like? The culture of silence began under the CPP administration of Nkrumah and thousands of innocent Ghanaians were thrown into prison without trial. The CPP of today are taking advantage of the time lapse and are counting on the memory loss of many of those who lived through those brutal years and the ignorance of the new generations of Ghanaians to peddle lies and half truths about what really happened under Nkrumah's dictatorshop. I was young but old enough to know what was happening in the country at the time. Nkrumah was a dictator and no nation on earth deserves a dictator, not even a benevolent dictator. Mfantsipim School was founded as a Methodist school in 1876. In the early 1960s Nkrumah's CPP administration decided to introduce the Young Pioneer Movement at Mfantsipim School but was fiercely resisted by the Methodist Church of Ghana. Nkrumah the dictator must always have his way so he fired the Headmaster, Reverend W.G.M.Brandful and replaced him with an old CPP loyalist, Mr J.W.Abruquah, a chain smoking returnee from England and author of the book "The Catechist", who was headmaster of Keta Secondary School before his appointment. I know what I'm talking about because Mr Abruquah was my headmaster at Kwabotwe.
Nkrumah did a lot of good things but he was also very brutal and very wicked as a president. CPP loyalists will always hide his dark past but some of us lived through those turbulent times and can never be fooled by their lies, chicanery and communist style propaganda.

It is always better to study the genesis of things that happen in history and in the case of Ghana, our recent political history. Do not jump to conclusions without foundations. Nor do I even believe that the present-day CPP understands or beards any resemblance to the original except in 'sound-bites' for 'nostalgic' and naive individuals who form today's CPP.

This is a very sad letter. Nkrumah made a lot of contributions towards Ghana but then so did others like Danquah. For instance, the unification of Ghana as we know it was down to him, the Okyehene, Nana Ofori Atta I and the Asantehene Nana Prempeh II who decided to merge the God Coast (Modern day, eastern, western, central and Accra) with Asante, BA and the northern Territories. This was done in 1946 and in 1947, Danquah, grant and others formed the UGCC to fight for independence. This was before anyone had ever heard of Nkrumah who was studying in the UK at the time

In addition to the struggle for independence, Danquah left his mark on our constitutional development by consistently pressing for political and economic freedom. Today, that freedom is enjoyed by all. His respect for tradition was another strong point of his and he saw the true value of our chiefs as partners in development

There was not a shred of evidence against him for anything. Twice he was detained and on both grounds it was because he was a champion of freedoms that Nkrumah had started to trample upon.

At least he left behind a political tradition which contrinues to bear his name and which will always champion his cause

J.B's letter says that, "... all I have been told is contained in a sheet of paper entitled "Grounds for Detention" in which I am accused that "in recent months" I have been actively engaged in a plan "to overthrow the Government of Ghana by unlawful means" and that I have planned thereby "to endanger the security of the State" (the Police and Armed Forces)."

Now we know that to be true. The overthrow really materialized in February 1966. We also know that, it was an effort that involved the CIA, J.B. Dankwa and K.A Busia were agents.

It's so pathetic to note how some Ghanaians or people feel happy when others are being subjected to brutality by a wicked dictator like Kwame Nkrumah. Those who're happy about this ugly detention should understand that Kwame Nkrumah didn't believe in democracy; and he, after independence turned Ghana into a one party state, turning the country toward Russia's communist system of government.

It took the intervention of the CIA and Ghana Army to oust this dreadful dictator. People must think twice before they celebrate the sufferings of other noblemen like late J.B. Danquah. May his sole rest in peace.

THey stated empahtically that the likes of AKo Adjei, Coffie-Crabbe, Ashie Nikoi etc had only embarked on peaceful protest and sought peaceful change. Sadly, thousands of UP, CPP and neutral persons went into prison and died or came out blind just because of the sycophants surrounding Nkrumah

According to the coup makers this abuse of political power made their work on 24 February ever so easy.

Danquah was a leading Gold Coast light - humble, fearless, committed to political and economic freedom which today all of us enjoy.

Also remember that prisoners have used toilet sheets as writing papers for time immemorial. And there are many of us old enough to have learned how to write either sitting on the floor or squatting.

You are not helping the Nation heal as we all hoped, during the Kufuor's Truth and Reconciliation Commission with such one-sided, mostly subjective indictment of Dr. Nkrumah.

It is interesting that you glaringly overlooked the numerous fatal attempts on Nkrumah's life, leading from the very beginning of his reign, and prior to even his ill-advised One-Party State that completed his machinations to impose tyranny on us.

Both the UP Opposition and the CPP Government were guilty of atrocities. Simply admit that, Sir. That would lend significant credibility to your views. Like I mentioned sometime ago, you may be a relative of someone that suffered some brutality from Nkrumah's side. What we may never know is what such relative of yours might have really done to call for the kind of inimical focus the CPP folks cast on him or her. But even so, we do acknowledge the emotional chasm that still exists between folks like you and Nkrumah, and similarly, also exists in others on the CPP side against the UP side.

However, it is time for us to refer to all the ills these past partisan operatives inflicted on each other for lessons that would lead us to more humane and fairer treatment of one another, and not to revive hostilities or claim sainthood to portray the demons in others.

How would describe the situation of those innocent victims of the bombing and various failed assassination attempts on Nkrumah, regarding their likelihood to permanently abhor the UP folks? I would not be surprised if some of those folks decide to permanently hate your side for the old vicious Politics.

As a modern intellectual I would expect you to present a balanced account of the Politics of those days based on the known, irrefutable facts of those dark days. Listing the evils of Nkrumah alone, some of which are nothing more than conjecturing of his personal attributes, and projected assumptions from how he might have reacted to certain life-threatening acts of his enemies, does not help to fully and rightly define him. Describing him as a Monster may suit your palate, especially as it satiates your desire for vengeance in posthumously destroying his image. But you awfully leaves out any possible crime by his foes that might have led him to be so harsh on them.

What I would propose, most humbly, is for you to show the flaws on both sides even if you would emphasize on your claim of personal victimization by Nkrumah.

And Danquah went about trying to defend his own kinsmen who had ritually murdered his relative, Nana Akyea Mensah? What sort of a human being was Danquah at all?

In fact, were Busia and Danquah not the two most respected leaders of the terrorist organization, the National Liberation Movement, in those days? Was Danquah not part of those who created this deadly and terrorist organization? How many innocent people did the NLM kill?

An American donating a cent to a terrorist organization can end up in prison under the Patriot Act, and the Patriot Act is so much like the PDA in many interesting aspects?

Ghana is peaceful today because of the PDA. The Protective Custody Decree (PCD), the National Liberation Council's version of the PDA, led to the torture, inhumane prison treatment, and death of three CPP followers: MAGNUS GEORGE, MO KWATIAH, AND EA MACLEAN!

Is Danquah's life more precious than those of the three men and the hundreds who died because of Busia's and Danquah's NLM? Let us stop this nonsensical one-sided revisionism and include the victims too. Nkrumah was a victim too.

I don’t even think it matters whether Nkrumah received the letter or not. The British government-approved PDA was the law of the land and it was applied. How long has it taken to formally charge Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp prisoners? Let us stop this hypocrisy and consider the sad fate of the victims and the fact the NLM wanted Nkrumah dead! Danquah would have been treated worse under the Patriot Act in the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.

The fallacy of defending a shaky or false standpoint or excusing one's own bad action by pointing out that one's opponent acts the same, will not connote any serious intellectual rigor.
Remember that a thing is not right because it also happened in America. Why do you Nkrumaists point to America to support Nkrumah's dictatorship and again point to America to condemn Nkrumah's overthrow? How can this country be your model for dictatorship and at the same time be an adversary for your criticism?

A defense attorney's job has nothing to do with what a lawyer personally believes to be right or just; it has everything to do with an adversarial system that must go intoconflict to facilitate fairness and due process in the whole trial. I could see murder right before my eyes and offer to defend the criminal because I would be guaranteeing balance and fairness in the system. Absent this, the trial will be akin to that of Jesus Christ before Pontius Plate where the loudest mob won the day. Danquah's defense of those criminals that killed the Apedwahene ensured that when the defendants were found guilty, the system was fair, balanced and impeccable. Today, there is no doubt that justice was done. In law, we call this res judicata; i.e. "properly adjudicated"'

By abolishing due process and imposing imprisonment without trial, Nkrumah became his own prosecutor and judge, and he forever put in question the actual guilt of all those you glibly condemn today. Had any of these people faced trial in a true court of competent jurisdiction, questions about their guilt would still not be debated today.

2. How can we have healing without the truth? Here you are accusing the opposition of terrorism when the account shows a conspiracy by Nkrumah's own cronies to kill him.
If we were to establish the chronology of the terror, you can truly say that Nkrumah's dictatorship caused them all, not the other way round. Nkrumah's brutal dictatorship led to the situation where the security of the country was compromised, and his eventual overthrow was the result of his own terroristic leadership!

But even if they are true, they will be differentiated from a governmental action akin to a state of emergency. Nkrumah appropriated for himself all the marshal laws under emergency rule while living the fool's paradise of freedom and democracy. Nothing had happened in the country to justify Nkrumah's emergency rule. Most of his actions, for example the PDA, one party state, life presidency and dismissal of the chief justice either predated the problems you enumerate, or were the causes of them.

4. None of my family members suffered any fate under Nkrumah. My father began as an Nkrumaist but later became his fiercest critic. To save his skin, he built a mansion in the forest in order to ventilate against Nkrumah's brutal dictatorship.

5. But I am a very fierce lover of my freedoms, and will be willing to protect these with my very life. And this should be the attitude of all intellectuals who have sworn that Nkrumah's nonsense will never happen in our country again.

6. I don't know of any flaws anywhere that will merit Nkrumah's dictatorship, and even if we admit that the opposition did what they are often alleged to have done, how do these lead to life presidency or one party state, or imprisonment without trial? How come that all Nkrumah' actions were meant for the benefit of Nkrumah and nobody else?
After you answer all my queries, you will understand that every dictator will find a good reason for any brutality, and that a legacy of leadership has nothing to do with excused dictatorship, but enduring freedoms in spite of incessant upheavals.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME GHANAIANS ARE HEARING THIS ONE-SIDES STORY. IT IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY. NKRUMAH IS STILL RISING HGHER AND HIGHER EACH DAY.

There is nothing I see in this letter that incurs my sympathy. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Have you seen some of the letters Nkrumah also wrote to him?

We have records from the CIA that he was working with the CIA itself, British intelligence, etc., to overthrow Nkrumah. American sources have revealed to us how he (and others) planned to overthrow Nkrumah within a year (he told an American embassy official). He should have been hanged.

I have no sympathy for this crook, a nation wreaker. He clearly said Ghana was not ready for independence and therefore did everything he could to destroy the nation. What a fifth columnist? The British-approved PDA was the law of the land and it caught him.

Kwadwo, I have no sympathy for Danquah at all, NOT IN THE LEAST. Not an atom of sympathy. He brought his death upon himself.

And let's face facts. In the end, I see nothing in this letter. DIDN'T DANQUAH TRY SEEKING PROTECTION FOR CRIMINALS WHO RITUALLY MURDERED HIS OWN COUSIN, NANA AKYEA MENSAH? My series on the great Nkrumah and his profound ideas continues unabated. That is more important that this Danquah story. I am more concerned about the children and innocent men and women who died as a result of the terrorism of the National Liberation Movement, headed by Busia and Danquah, that this unemotional letter. There is nothing in it for me to bother my head about!

If there should be distribution of sympathy and mourning, it should go to those children and innocent men and women who died at the hands of the National Liberation Movement. Let us also remember that Danquah and Busia were the NLM’s two most respected leaders. We should also take into consideration the attempts on Nkrumah’s life.

Nkrumah will continue to stand tall among the greatest leaders of the 20th century. This sympathy for Danquah will do nothing to dethrone the unparalleled greatness and achievement of Nkrumah across Africa. Let us continue to celebrate “Africa’s Man of the Millennium.” Shame to traitors like Danquah and Busia.

On Governance And Accountability.

[Discussant's Remarks at the Pan-African Forum on the Commonwealth Principles on the Accountability of and Relationship between the Three Branches of Government, organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat, 4 - 6 April 2005, Inter-Continental Hotel, Nairobi}
Only last Friday I was looking at a book written by a Dutch diplomat, Roel Van Der Veen, titled 'What Went Wrong with Africa'. I was reminded of a book written some thirty years earlier by a French agronomist, Rene Dumont, called 'False Start in Africa'. In order to truly understand what has gone wrong in this continent, we have to admit first that we really did have a false start.
The struggles for independence in this continent were struggles for democracy, development, human rights and ethical governance. All the independence and liberation movements insisted throughout that they were committed to democracy. Almost all of these movements enshrined in their constitutions the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In fact, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was enshrined in the OAU Charter.
But once political independence was attained, the first victim was democracy itself. To develop, we were told, we had to sacrifice the luxury of democracy. To fight imaginary enemies, we were required to forego human rights. Starting from Ghana in 1961, most African countries passed Preventive Detention Acts. In fact, Ghana copied that from apartheid South Africa, which promulgated such an Act in 1959. Ironically, the first victim of the act was Timothy Adamafio, the man who introduced the Bill in the Ghana Parliament in the first place. The scenario was repeated in Kenya, where Jaramogi Odinga who, as Vice President and Minister of Home Affairs had introduced the Bill, came to fall victim to it. In the then Tanganyika, now Tanzania Mainland, Oscar Kambona, who was the Home Affairs Minister and therefore the person who sent the Bill to the National Assembly, was lucky enough to flee to London before the Act caught up with him. But Orton Chirwa was not so lucky. As Justice Minister and Attorney General, he sent to Parliament a Bill establishing traditional courts in Malawi where the accused were not entitled to defence lawyers. When President Banda's security agents kidnapped him, his wife and son in Zambia and took them across to Malawi, they were tried in a traditional court and were sentenced to death. Orton Chirwa died in jail.
We in Africa, committed our first sin when in 1963 we condoned the overthrow of an elected government in Togo and the assassination of President Olympio. After that we could only stand and watch as several military coups and assassinations of political leaders took place.
The hopes of African masses that independence would bring development and a better life were squashed by mismanagement and misdirection of our resources. We went into grandiose projects that had no relationship to our circumstances and embarked on programmes that were of no direct benefit to our people. We borrowed heavily, and instead of investing those financial resources in productive areas, we went on a shopping spree to satisfy our conspicuous consumption patterns. We have been living in the South as if we were citizens of the North.
We must admit that the economic, social and political crises that have been facing us are of our own making. And the only one who can lift us out of this quagmire is ourselves. The thinking that the West can come with a Marshall Plan' to help us from this situation is a myth. The West cannot help us create another Japan that would compete with the United States. The hope that we can replicate the example of the so-called 'Asian Tigers' is misplaced. In any case, the last crisis had shown that the 'Asian Tigers' were just paper tigers. It has to dawn on us that we are on our own. It is to the self-interest of Western Europe to help Eastern Europe and North Africa; otherwise millions in those areas would want to cross over to Western Europe. It is understandable when Japan pours a lot of resources into South-East Asia, otherwise they are likely to witness yet again the Œ Vietnamese boats'. But what would be the self-interest of Europe to help Africa South of the Sahara? Can we, in our small canoes, sail to Fortress Europe?
What can be done then? We must realize that development and democracy must go together. They are sides of the same coin. Democratic development therefore entails the following:
* Ethical Governance;
* Observance. promotion and protection of human rights. When we talk of human rights, we include the rights of women; the rights of children; workers' rights; the rights of the disabled, ethnic and linguistic minorities; and most importantly, the rights to life. livelihood, education, health and peace;
* Full enjoyment of national resources and their equitable distribution;
* Rule of law, accountability and transparency;
* Constitutionalism.
In most of our countries, we have embraced the notion of the separation of powers, though the practice indicates otherwise. How can we talk of the separation of powers when the President is part of Parliament? When an Act passed by Parliament, cannot come into force until it is assented to by the President? When the President, appoints High Court and Court of Appeal judges? When the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice are in the line of succession? When Ministers sit both in the Cabinet and Parliament?
In many of our countries, we have an electoral system that is based on first past the post. A party can get 40% of the votes and yet acquires less than 10% of the seats in Parliament. A President can be declared elected by getting 30% of the votes.
We have a judicial system that is iLL-equipped, denied of resources and overwhelmed with cases. How can we say, as we do in Malawi and Tanzania, that a constitutional case can be determined by a Bench of three judges, while you do not have the resources of bringing the three judges together, and yet a case which carries capital punishment can be determined by one judge?
We need to start afresh. Those who talk of a Second Liberation definitely have a point. We need to look again at our structures of governance. We need to redefine our priorities. We need to inculcate into our societies new values and ethics. The spirit of patriotism and solidarity that was there in the first years of independence must be rekindled.
We need to look into the following and see if we can develop a common pattern in Commonwealth Africa, if not in the whole continent.
i) The enormous powers of the President must be reduced. What we have created is an "Imperial Presidency". The President is the Head of State, Head of Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He (and there has been no female President so far) appoints Ministers, Ambassadors, Regional and District Governors, Permanent Secretaries, Directors of Departments and Vice-Chancellors of public universities. Under the Preventive Detention Act, he can put somebody in jail without trial, and he can also allow a death penalty to be carried out.
ii) Either we have a legislature fully elected under a Proportional Representation system, or we have a combination of a PR system and a first-past-the-post system. The legislature must represent the diversity of the population in their ideological/political beliefs, cultural/ethnic/linguistic composition, gender balance and class differences.
iii) The Courts must be accessible, especially to the poor and the disadvantaged in society. There has developed now in our countries a strong trend of buying rights. We keep saying that justice delayed is justice denied. But our courts are overwhelmed, and hundreds of people languish in jails waiting for the determination of their cases.
iv) Provision of legal aid to the poor must be compulsory in our legal systems.
As I said before, democracy and development are sides of the same coin. Our development must be people-oriented. We must dispel this notion that outsiders can bring development to us, or that ideas and expertise can only come from the IMF or the World Bank. In order for development programmes and projects to be owned by ourselves and be relevant to our needs, they must emanate from us. Foreign imposed solutions to our problems cannot work.
On the development agenda, we need to go back to the drawing boards, and take another look at the ŒLagos Plan of Action' and the African Common Market idea and also come up with alternative development strategies to SAPs, ERPs and other IMF and World Bank edicts.
Last year SADC came out with Election Guidelines for the Region. Before that also SADC passed a resolution that member-countries would not recognise any government that comes into power through unconstitutional means. The countries of West Africa, grouped together in ECOWAS, also produced a similar resolution; and its application was very effective in the recent Presidential succession episode in Togo. These efforts must be supported and strengthened.
The AU at its last Summit in Addis Ababa has agreed to the establishment of an African Court of Human Rights. Though no country yet has been found to host the seat of the Court, we must exert our pressure on the AU to put the Court in place soon.

Do we know if this letter really reached Dr. Nkrumah? It is most powerful and invokes the very basic principles of Human Rights and fair Justice.

We should all lament and regret the detention of Danquah and other Political Prisoners who we never really had the occasion to use the rule-of-Law to prove them guilty.

While most of us would justify the incarceration of such Prisoners, especially in subordinating such justification on the recent USA Gitmo activities on terrorists, we must be honest and humane enough to acknowledge that such incarceration was not the best way to contain even established treasonous convicts. That is to excuse or belittle the violent, fatalistic threats to Dr. Nkrumah by some of his staunch foes.

We must acknowledge that those days saw mutual inhumane and even violent vengeance and power-play between the UP/NLM and the CPP. We must also be open to the idea that many of those acts of violence that were attributed to these Political leaders could have been plotted and carried out by some lower level apparatchiks of both Parties, without the leaders prior consent or approval. In those days, many folks would act own their own to prove their exceptional dedication to the causes that the leaders were spearheading.

As much as the numerous assassination attempts on Nkrumah, some dating very earlier on in his reign, ought to be condemned, we must boldly acknowledge that Danquah and other Political Prisoners could have been treated more humanely and still kept at bay politically. It is an act of cowardice for the CPP Administration to have resorted to the PDA with no subsequent rule-of-law adjudication to prove the alleged crime. The length of detention without trial was unspecified in the Law. That made it fundamentally flawed.

Somehow, I feel strongly that had Dr. Nkrumah received the said letter, he would have immediately ordered for Danquah's release. Somewhere along the line, I believe, some intermediary, possibly some CPP Partisan Official through whom the letter might have been routed, sat on it.

We should all bow our heads in shame for how we treated our political opponents on both sides of the aisle in those days. But we must as well find some inner conviction to forgive one another and not always invoke the painful emotions that emanated from the old wrongs by each side.

This brings me back to the fact that we still pursue our political differences with horrific, potentially life-destroying hatred which I admonish all of us to rethink and refrain from. We hamper our mutual advancement in peace and clog the Nation's political veins with lethal plaque.

Both the CPP and the NPP and all their various incarnated Parties must immediately hold a summit to exchange regrets and forgiveness.

First off, the universal expectation of Justice is predicated upon given equal attention to the grievances of opposing sides in any case. It would be most disingenuous for anyone to claim the UP and its anti-Nkrumah operatives did not do anything wrong or hurtful deserving some defensive reaction from Nkrumah.

If we all would go back to where the split of Nkrumah from the UGCC occurred to trace the genesis of this on-going mutual hatred, it would be clearer who started the brutalities that you are now trying so hard to blame on only Nkrumah.

The CPP did not start the violence. This is supported by the archival data from the British Colonial Office repository. But that aside, cooler heads should have prevailed to de-escalate the chaos and mutual attacks.

It amazes me that you are faulting my moral principles for suggesting that the UP's resort to dangerous anti-democratic methods to get rid of Nkrumah called for his brutal suppression of his enemies.

If you would be invoking the Christian principle of 'turning the other cheek' and wondering why Nkrumah simply did not abide by it but retaliated with a much heavier punch, I can only say Nkrumah was doing what the UP would have done, had the shoe been on their feet, and most likely trying to repel the life-threatening machinations from his foes. And that could well be seen as defending himself.

But you see, this is where morality hits the wall of self-preservation. I, honestly, would prefer Danquah would have been paraded in Court to defend himself on the charges made against him. But given the environment that these Politicians thrived in, there wasn't much of a model Justice system that they could very well learn from or emulate. The British had trained them with and done similar injustice to them by resorting to denial of trial and summary convictions. That is basically what Nkrumah knew of restraining his enemies he believed were bent on taking his life.

We could turn your moral question around and ask why would the UP not persist in seeking democratic and peaceful change in Government, in the first place, for as long as that would take to succeed?

Nevertheless, I acknowledge two wrongs do not make a right. But in all practicalities of human behavior, I am sure you would admit, most folks would always resort to trying to fight fire with fire.

As an honorable Law Professional yourself, you would admit that most legal precepts in the World acknowledge retaliation for self-preservation as basis of discharging culprits in Court of Law. And that alone accounts for why most folks would still react similarly to threatening or offending parties. Modern Political systems all over the World still omit that Christian principle of 'turning the other cheek'. At best, they all prefer deferring retaliation to the Courts. So, in any case of assault or infringement of other person's rights that even comes before the Courts, legal excuse is offered the accused for discharge if that person could establish the he or she acted in self-defense. What we may all be scratching our heads on from time to time, however, is the likely disproportionate level of any retaliation. And that is widely subjective, unless some definitive Constitutional enactment stipulates the boundaries of such retaliatory act.

This stance I take in seeming defense of Nkrumah is not out of any nostalgia for Young Pioneer. I was not an enthusiastic member of that group. Remember, it was mostly imposed on Schools, unlike the many rigorously enforced rules in most Mission Schools of those days and prior.

Anyway, I am more inclined towards tying the ends of these old feuds derived from irrepressible emotions associated with the mistakes of our past and late Political leaders.

If the Irish could find ways to iron their differences and proudly build their country together in constructive democratic environment, so should we. I see the continual revival of the same old lop-sided accusations of one group or the other as a nagging, prolonged menace to our real political and economic freedom. We have been using the same reasoning in feeding tribal animosities among us, more because many Ghanaians erroneously claim the current incarnation of the UP, the NPP, is the only Party Akans, especially, Ashantis and Akyems must ever belong to, or a Party that only exists for the sole interests of the two tribes. With such presumption, anyone in any opposing Party is automatically viewed by those NPP sympathizers as an Akan- or Ashanti- or Akyem-hater and enemy, or a traitor, if that person is from those tribes. Those in the other Parties, especially, NDC and CPP, who believe NPP is solely existing as a tribal Party then also see any member of the NPP as a primitive tribalist with feudalistic aspirations. That is not a healthy way to develop a modern Nation. And it threatens the survival and deepening of our Democracy.

I hope, soon in the near future, our current generation would come to terms with our dark political past and settle to intelligently devise constructive ways to cohabit and build the Country in peace and mutual pride.

One of J B Danquah's daughter was my school mate at secondary school, and She was visiting him sometimes at Nsawam. We had the opportunity to hear news about his father after a visit, and on no occasion did she mention most of the things said on this article. This in my opinion is Gabby's own invention. If the man described by many as doyen of Ghanaian politics has not allowed himself to be used by the imperialist to thwart the forward match of our country, may be the dumsor we are enjoying today could ve been averted. It is obvious that subsequent government stopped thinking and they didn't ve any clear mind of their own to rule and develop Ghana. For the very idea of prison is a foreign and alien concept to Africa and Africans, since no African language has a word for it.

It is about time we turned all such penal institutions into institutions of learning we things useful for the whole community will be taught and learnt.

We claim to be independent, yet have guarded and continue to guard studiously, all the barbaric ideas and instruments bequeath us by our colonial masters. In what then can we be said to be independent.

You cannot treat another human as an animal and expect them to behave otherwise.

A person commits a crime simply because they do not know any better. And instead of educating them as to the right way, we keep them cooped up for a number of years and release them back into society - not having undergone gone any meaningful rehabilitation. How then do we expect such people to fit in and to make a meaningful contributions to the society?

Until we wipe the board clean and start afresh, to wit, until we are "born again," we will never see the end of our problems.

Afterall, what does being a civilized mean, if not being civil and polite to our fellows? Yet, we let barbarians, uncouth and blood thirsty savages and devils tell us we are the uncivilized ones, and we buy it.

Nkrumah was betrayed by jb, Edward Akufu Ado and Williams Offori Atta dat Nkrumah was de person who instigated de 1948 riots. As a result Nkrumah was eventually sidelined by d colonial masters when Cousey Committee of Constitutional. JB and Co were included. Did JB sympathize wt Nkrumah when he was marginalized from de cuosey committee and when he Nkrumah was removed UGCC general secretary?

Okyere-Darko, if you wanted to make a point you should have posted the scan copy of the original letter. During the time of JB there were no pendrives or disks so where did you get the soft copy of the letter that you posted.
If you want to celebrate J.B Danquah please desist from this kind of divisive tendencies. If you go to other African countries and post this kind of articles you will be stone to death.
Nana Addo watch people like Okyere-Darko very carefully so that you can drawn votes from other ethnic groups other than the Asantes and Akyims who having been most of your only voters in 2008 and 2012 general elections. I am not trying to be tribalistic this is a hard facts if you analyse the 2008 and 2012 general elections you can see that you only win mostly from areas where twi speaking (that is Ashanti Region and Akyim areas, Assin Area, Ahafo areas, Denkyira areas, Akuapim areas, Kwahu areas, and so on) dominate and these people have been opponents of Nkrumah since 1951 to date.
It is only Ashanti Region and Akyim areas that you hear people insulting Nkrumah because of the lies that their leaders told them about Nkrumah.

It would take care of the suspicion that Danquah favorites only crafted this letter to solicit more sympathies for him and to brainwash our young against Nkrumah by portraying him as a vicious, evil tyrant extraordinaire.
