TRUE, TRUE, & TRUE that many "Green Card Holders in the United States" have no idea as to LONG ABSENCES from the U.S. So, in order not to be a traveling victim like Agya Sekou, PLEASE READ what the U.S. Department of State says about long absences from the United States. (And don’t be LAZY, read the whole damn thing—for important info on the subject).
One of the advantages of securing a US green card is that it allows you to travel more freely in and out of the US. US green card holders can more easily visit friends and family abroad and travel throughout the world when compared with US residents who are living in the US on non-immigrant visas. However, when traveling abroad as a green card holder, there are a number of important considerations to keep in mind.
For example, if you wish to travel outside the United States as a permanent resident, you will generally need to have a passport from your native country or you may need a refugee travel document in order to travel outside of the United States. The country you are traveling to may also have additional requirements for entry or exit. For example, you may also need to secure a visa for the country that you are visiting. The Department of State’s website has additional useful information about exit and entry requirements for specific countries. It is a good idea to visit this website before making your travel plans.
Once you leave the United States and wish to re-enter the US, you will need to present a valid green card as well as your passport at a port of entry. This means that before traveling, you need to make sure that your green card will still be valid when you return home. When you attempt to re-enter the United States, an authority from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office will review your documentation to determine whether you are eligible for re-entry into the United States.
One additional thing to keep in mind is that extended travel outside the United States could potentially affect your green card status. You are free to travel outside the United States as a US green card holder, and while brief and temporary travel outside the United States will not usually affect your green card status, extended stays outside of the country could potentially affect your status. When you leave the US for an extended period of time, it may appear to immigration authorities that you do not wish to make the US your permanent home. If this is the case, you will be considered to have abandoned your green card status. “In general, this is an issue if you are absent from the United States for more than 12 months.”
When traveling outside the United States as a green card holder, therefore, is a good idea not to travel for extended periods of time. It is also important to maintain United States community ties, family ties, US employment, and a US home. You must also file your US income taxes as a US resident. In general, you wish to establish that you intend to return to live permanently in the United States. Maintaining a US mailing account, keeping US bank accounts, and otherwise maintaining your ties to the United States are important in order to ensure that you are allowed re-entry into the United States.
If you are a green card holder and wish to travel outside of the United States for longer than a year, it is important to maintain documentation that shows that you intend to make the United States your permanent home. If you plan on traveling for an extended period of time outside the United States, is also good idea to apply for a re-entry permit by filing form I-131. While this form does not guarantee re-entry into the United States, it does allow you to apply for re-entry into the United States without obtaining a returning resident visa from a Consulate or US Embassy. It also helps you show authorities that you intend to live permanently in the United States.
$$You worked hard enough to get the Green Card, so you should equally work hard to know how it works or how to use it.$$

However, I would like to make correction on paragraph two of your posting. “Green card holder can only travel to their home country free without acquiring visa but not throughout the world as you seem to suggest.” There are lots of countries (Europeans) who required an entry visa for green card holders even when you are just passing through…..

Who says Nkrumah was a Communist? There is a difference between Socialist and Communist. And Sweden in the West has been a Socialist State for a long while and the Citizens do not have to be aligned with Russia or China.
Anyway, if one shouldn't be given a resident or work permit in another Country that practices a different Political ideology from one's preferred ideology, then there would be no Americans in China, right now. If China were to drive all American entities back home because America practices Capitalism and China is stuck with Communism, America's Economic system would collapse in a few weeks if not days.
But we must, also, significantly, remember that Nkrumah, like many of his peers around the World from numerous developing Countries, leaned towards the East in frustrated reaction to the Western subjugation their people suffered.
I bet my bottom dollar that had the Russians been our Colonial Masters, the Nkrumahs of our part of the World would have embraced the West with even greater zeal.
It is the Western tendency of brazenly dehumanizing the Citizens of the Colonies it occupied that engendered an angst against it from most of the Native leaders. Those leaders thought at the time that they needed some counterforce to the West to seek refuge in. It just happened that the Soviets were not formidable enough to provide the Economic, Social and Military security those Native leaders sought for, as time soon revealed.
So, hey, let's all say, now, we have no serious patriots who yearns to be a Communist. And, let's face it. If China and Russia today are all frantically repositioning themselves to practice some brand of Capitalism, why would anyone in his or her right mind want to remain in the crumbling ideology of Communism?
If we can't beat the West, we must as well join them. It is just unfortunate that the UP/NLM part of our Political System that also conveniently relied on the West to hedge its opposition to Nkrumah, who the West had marked down as a pariah, still claims a certain inalienable first right to the West's love. It is that presumption of the Danquah/Busia/Dombo groups that they own that special right to claim the West's best friends, that often gets some of their sympathizers to brand any Party that emerges from the CPP as a communist Party. This attitude of some NPP members is like a toddler enviously protecting his or her presumed special bond with the parent from any other child perceived to be encroaching upon the former's presumed exclusive emotional domain around the parent. I would concede, though, that the US and UK Authorities in particular often subtly show their bias for the NPPs. This may be the reason why Nana Akufo-Addo has been organizing trips to these Countries ever so often to meet with their representatives, even before he won the Primaries, as if to remind the West that they should reserve for him their better support because he has long been on their camp.
No Party in Ghana is a Communist Party. It would be totally absurd for anyone to brand even the CPP as a Communist Party. Even with any lingering nostalgia for the Old CPP, the farthest its own die-hard Nkrumahists could go to characterize and distinguish the current CPP from the UP/NLM incarnations, like the NPP, is call themselves Social Democrats.
And as I mentioned earlier, some of the Western Nation's are strongly dominated by Social Democrats who embrace Capitalism. And need I say the CPPs of today love Capitalism? That would be an understatement. Let Nduom or Dr. Akosah deny that.

If one holds a US green card, one has to be physically resident in the US for a total of 183 + 1 days a year. If you are out of the US for 183 + 2 days in any given year, you are deemed to have abandoned your permanent residency, and you lose permanent residency status. The real issue at stake is what happens to a person in Sekou's situation who has an expired green card but nevertheless seeks admittance. In this instance, the person has to be put in a deportation proceeding (which could take years) to determine his admissibility or otherwise. A person holding an expired green card has several advantages and options to have his card reinstated...
As I stated earlier, unless there are supervening circumstances, a person in Sekou's situation is hardly deported at all. Later developments will clarify the real reasons why he was deported.

I don't see the relevance of this question to the issue at hand. The man is home in Ghana, and whether he was deported or denied entry should not bring about any semantic war....But "deportation" and "denial of entry" are certainly legal terms of art connoting different circumstances. "Deportation" is a very long legal process in the ambit of US immigration law...and as I stated earlier, it could take years to accomplish. So obviously, if Seikou was indeed immediately returned, he might have been denied entry. But there is no basis for this denial of entry if as alleged, the matter is with his green card.
There are many reasons for a person to be denied entry into the U.S. The most obvious reasons for denied entry include if a person has previously worked illegally in the U.S., is suspected of being an intended immigrant (i.e. planning on staying in the U.S. past the terms of their admission), or of having ties to terrorist or criminal organizations. But there are many more reasons for persons to be excluded from the U.S. Among them are having been found guilty of crimes of moral turpitude (child molestation, rape, fraud, theft, etc.), having been found guilty of a criminal offense (for instance murder or grand theft), having overstayed a previous visit to the U.S., or if the visitor is suspected of having an infectious disease.
Sekou does not fall into any of these categories; and so we must wait for more information on his return before making any determination if justice was done to him.

I don't know how true this story can be but just don't let us make the USA the heaven on earth! Nonsense ! what is the signifigance of this story? A simpleman is not allowed to enter into his former country of residence and suddenly a whole fuss about it. Ghana is the best place to live without NDC ! In the 60s- 70s it was the paradise for Afro Americans and Africans for their holidays or to seek for political wisdom. Ghana became obsolete when his outcast reigned for 2 decades in the land of African's hopes and aspirations , with guns in Alcapone's style to deprive our beloved country , the Akwaaba status. Then we lost evry privilege as the limelight of progressive Africa. Today our importance is zero and that makes it possible for the United States to humiliate Dr Nkrumah's son for what regulations that could have easily been arranged at the premises of the JFK's airport ! I cannot blame anyone but this outcast JJ rawlings ! Ironically, Sekou have had admiration for this Traitor and was a stauched member of his NDC!

The guy has been away from States for a long time that is the reason for his deportation. Nothing more. If he wants it to be restored he has to start it all over again.
We don't call it Deportation! He was REFUSED ENTRY, and it happens just everyday in the USA.
At least he did not carry any cocaine for the NDC. That is the good news. He can always reapply if he has good reasons to.
WHAT WAS HE THINKING?WHAT A WASTE!
He claims he's a communist/socialist/nkrumahist. Why doesn't he head for Cuba or North Korea? What's he looking for in America?
When did he say he is a communist?
I am surprised he has green card. If he is a true Nkrumahist, he should be a Russian green card holder. Russia will never give such a card to a Black man. These so called Nkrumahists are hypocrites.
Who says Nkrumah was a Communist? There is a difference between Socialist and Communist. And Sweden in the West has been a Socialist State for a long while and the Citizens do not have to be aligned with Russia or China.
