SOME SAVAGE GHANAIANS HAVE BECOME VERY ARROGANT TO DOCTORS. THEY PRETEND THEY ARE SICK, GIVE A LOT OF ONCORDINATED AND FLIMSY COMPLAINTS ANT AWAIT BASKETFULL OF MEDICINES FROM THE UNFORTUNATE DOCTOR; FOR A LOT OF INSIGNIFICANT COUGHS, THE PATIENT WILL DEMAND COUGH MIXTURE FROM THE DOCTOR AND HELL BREAKS LOSE IF THE DOCTOR DOESN'T COMPLY. A SICK CHILD'S MOTHER ALMOST ALWAYS PRETENDS TO BE SICK TOO. THIS HAPPENS AT LESS CIVILIZED PARTS OF THE COUNTRY WHERE DOCTORS AND NURSES AREFREQUENTLY ASSAULTED. IT IS HELL TO BE A DOCTOR AT SUCH SAVAGE PLACES.

The current practice where newly inducted doctors called house officers with no experience whatsoever are left to experiment with (attend to) serious medical cases while residents, specialists and consultants are away must be put to a stop immediately. There must be at least one specialist present 24 hours in three shift rotations to supervise them. Our health system as it is presently is not the best. The situation in the countryside and rural communities is even worse.
Do not doubt the wisdom in these words.

During the various discussions in SA regarding the coming implementation of the NHI in SA, is the decision to have in place a top up insurance.
Top up insurance will cover care that is above and beyond what the state can reasonably afford for every citizen.
The second issue was with the Road Accident Fund - a state insurance for victims of road accident (part of the fuel levy). Recent amendments and changes in the Bill have called for individuals to have a Personal Accident Insurance cover. This insurance cover can also be regarded as a top-up cover. The RAF will cover cost of medical treatment and rehabilitation as a result of a road accident. General damages and lost of income as a result of the accident will be capped at about R240,000 per annum. Any person who earn more than this amount as annual income therefore reasonably has to take additional insurance cover to bridge the gap.
I personally know the financial challenges in Ghana, but for the system to function properly, there is a need for top-up medical insurance.
In addition, we need to encourage establishment of huge and highly efficient private/corporate hospitals. The existing teaching hospitals are overstretched. It is this similar idea that Dr Wereko -Brobby is alluding to when it comes to privatization of power generation and distribution.

From the figures being put out there by the Minister of Health, the nature of the theat is not one of financing, but clearly, the threat to the sustainability of the NHIS, has to do solely, completely, categorically on ALLOCATION/REMITTANCE. The question then becomes where is the NHIL money that has been collected by SSNIT and GRA which should be allocated or remitted to the NHIS?
Clearly what is happening is that, the Mahama NDC govt is misallocating the NHIL or at best looting the funds, leading to the gradual collapse of one of the most forward looking and progressive social intervention programs initiated by the visionary NPP govt, on health.
And the Minister's comment as to the real challenge being the approved budget and allocation formula, serving as the basis of the release falling short of the requirement since 2009, sums up the sheer incompetence and magnificent looting and misallocation of the funds geared towards the delivery of effective healthcare in the country under the Mahama NDC govt.
The Mahama NDC govt clearly lacks the ability and the focus as well as vision to drive the socio-economic development of the country, and until they are massively jettisoned at the ballot box, Ghana is going nowhere. Looting everywhere including the NHIS is at the very core of the existential threat to healthcare delivery in the country in this case.

If we set some of the premium money aside to employ community nurses who will follow up with home calls for children vaccinations and appointments, wellness education and promote healthy lifestyle etc, we will overall reduce the cost of healthcare. We need to spend a little on people to get this system to work. If possible the NHIS should build small gyms in every community and charge a minimum fee to encourage everyone to use.If we can't afford gyms in every community statistic should help us know which community cost NHIS the most and what medical conditions are reported most (Assessment). I have a medical insurance and my insurance company pays for my gym fee hoping that me going to the gym will help them avoid paying heavy medical bills and so far its working right for them. Ghana is NOT poor we only lack vision and leadership.
