Prof there are disadvantaged students all over the country. Medical school in Kumasi is not giving preference to Ashanti based disadvantaged. UG medical school is not doing that for Gas. UCC medical school is not doing that for Fantis. So please do not build your foundation on TRIBALISM. It is a very slipery road!!!!!

If possible admit only voltarians, why not? Maybe that will stem this stupidity of Ghana training people who then leave our shores and never return.

It is only in Ghana that we establish educational institutions before handling faculty issues.
We did the same thing with the worthless JSS system: Schools were established before books and teachers were even thought of as issues that needed to be dealt with.

Congratulation. It is our expectation that those the school is sponsoring would come back and serve the interest of the school and avoid strike and other vices that retard progress.
Thanks to the council.

And yes, preference will be given to "disadvantaged" Voltarians at the expense of the rest of the country. This goes to show you the inward-looking nature of these people. Using the people's money to develop their region an reaping where they've not sown

I happen to have a few observations about this new medical school:
1) I believe the necessity is there to train more doctors.
2) If the facilities are not yet up to par for training, there is precedent- 1st graduates from UST completed their training at Korle Bu; U of Ghana med School at Korle Bu started before all necessary structures were completed
3) I don't understand the seemingly bias to the Volta Region, as have several others who have already commented.
4) Prof Fred Newton Binka is a very smart and capable man, and I have faith that he will succeed

Those of us who are familiar with medical training know that UHAS is not prepared for medical training. It takes about 6 years for specialism in surgery and 4 years for specialism in O and G. The newly qualified specialists usually are not experienced to teach on their own. So sending people to specialize does not mean they will be ready to handle medical courses at the hospital. One approach will be to encourage specialists to move to Volta region.

I wonder why this School in its infancy and still breastfeeding, want to bit more than it can Chew.
In the first place, how many Specialists are employed at Ho general Hospital. And you set-up a Teaching Hospital to train Doctors, not to talk about basic modern facilities in the form of Hospital equipment, machiney and other installations, while UHAS is now going to sponsor 11 people to Train at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. The bottom line is that, these 11 newly Trained Doctor Specialist whom may lacks work experience,at the specialist levels would immediately start to Teach the Medical Student.Imagine !
My question is: Is anyone forcing this man Anyidoho,Chairman of the Council and Cohorts to Set-up a Medical School at this teething State/Stage of UHAS !
I think the way forward is to start with or continue to do Pre-Medicine to feed/supply Students to the already established Medical Schools until everything is well in place to Start your own medical school. Anyway.

apart from that Volta region contributes to the medical profession (doctors and nurses) and teachers than any other region both in absolute and per capita numbers. we need to solidify these gains, since they voltarians also shun foreign travel and tend to remain or return to Ghana to keep the nation afloat in education and health.
