I work for a utility company as a supervising engineer. Energy is part of a country's security. Why will Ghana want to depend on coal from china, when instead we can build gas fired plants and make good use of our own natural resources just like every country does. The countries mentioned in the article talk about these nations producing their own source of fuel. Ghana can also build Gas fired plants and make use of our own fuels.

Opanin, surely, whether the coal is coming from America, South Africa, Australia, China or wherever it is Mr. Sie Xiaohai will buy his coal to cause endless suffering from polluted air from particulants and coal dust, it makes sense to build a wood pellet/wood chip power plant - and create employment for those who will work in the agro-forestry plantations and factories that will provide that feedstock?
Go to South Africa and see how people's health is being destroyed by pollution from Edmond's coal-fired power plants.
The greed and selfishness of our ruling elites knows no bounds. Yet another environmental woe being planned to be added to the many future generations are being condemned with. Pity.

Comment to: World Bank may support African coal power
How about the inherent health and environmental issues associated with coal-burning power plants?
We are already overwhelmed by a lot of diseases we don't have a good grip on and now there's the possibility of exposing the next generations to a whole whack of breathing related problems.
The continent is blessed with large volumes of clean-burning gas so why can't this be harnessed and its delivery improved across the continent to power these plants instead of coal?
The world bank will be saving the next generations of Africans from a lot of health problems if they can invest in the exploration and delivery of safer fuel for these power plants.
Africa definitely needs these plants for industrialization but we shouldn't create more problems for ourselves in our haste to achieve the goal of industrialization."
Ghanaian leaders should realize by now that China doesn't give a shit about the environmental issues they will create in Ghana as long as there's a buck to be made to their benefit. They have single-handedly polluted our rivers and streams, messed up a lot of farm lands with their illegal mining. No non-Chinese national can go to China and start prospecting illegally for minerals in China and survive to see the light of day. That person will be locked up in a dungeon prison and never be heard of or from again. But here in Ghana our corrupt leaders give them the green light to do what they want as long as the leaders are getting their cuts from the illegal activities of the Chinese.
Now they are in effect, signing the 'death warrants' or 'death certificates' of the next generations of Ghanaians by agreeing to the construction of this coal power plants in the country.
Just mind-boggling. Makes you wonder if these leaders really care about Ghanaians.
I wonder if they would ask the Chinese to build well-equipped and well-manned hospitals in the towns and villages that will border or surround this power plant because just as sure as God made little green apples, the inhabitants of these towns, villages and beyond are going to see a surge in breathing related diseases, not to mention the 'acid rain' that is going turn the surrounding forests into man-made deserts.
Very unfortunate to have leaders with no foresight.
GOD HELP GHANA TO GET THE CHINESE OUT OF OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!!!!

Worked in the Coal ,Gold and Platinum Mines here in South Africa. In order to import Coal, we need the following:
1. We need a dedicated coal handling terminal at Tema.
2. dedicated transport system from the port to where the plant is sited.
3. the cost of the freight
4. All countries using coal fired stations have coal prodiuction in their countires like USA, UK, South Africa, Australia, china etc. It is a competitive advantage. Ours is hydro and gas.
4. The timeline to build these coal fired stations and the skill to manage it.
5. The whole world wants to go green but we rather are thinking of entering it.
Poor technical know how and advise . They are ghanaians with knowledge of coal operations supplying pwer stations. Who advises ministers. may be it is due to desperateion .
