Ghanaian workers urged to take advantage of distance education

Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has urged workers to take advantage of the University’s distance and continuing education programme to upgrade themselves.

He said the goal of the distance and continuing education programme of the University was to bring university education to the doorstep of Ghanaians.

Prof Ellis said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sideline of the inauguration of the KNUST's GH? 10.5 Million Accra City Campus and Institute of Distance Learning Centre at Pokuase near Accra.

He said so far there are 13 centres in the country, one in each regional capital and the rest in Tema, Tarkwa and Akosombo.

He said with the newly inaugurated Accra City Campus, their office accommodation and lecture hall problems would be a thing of the past.

The Vice Chancellor said in tandem with the Institute’s vision of increasing access to relevant and flexible tertiary and continuing education and training anytime, anywhere through the Distance Learning Mode using multimedia

Prof Ellis said the student population of NKUST was over 42,000 and the University cannot contain the entire student population on its main Campus in Kumasi.

He said KNUST’s distance and continuing education programme was very flexible and is a weekend programme designed to help workers upgrade themselves while working at the same time.

“KNUST is the best educational institution in Ghana, and we encourage all workers to take advantage of our programmes which are professional.We provide the best quality education at the tertiary level,” the Vice Chancellor said.

He commended the University of Cape Coast, and the University of Education, Winneba, for their groundbreaking efforts in the concept of distance and continuing education through the colleges of education.
