  The economy is hitting workers hard and many have run out of ideas.

  I welcome Nana Yaw Ando's call on govt to subsidize fertilizer. How ever the call appears to be skewed towards cocoa farmers to the detriment of the rest other crop farmers in the country.
  It is my opinion that govt extend the subsidy to encompass all farmers particularly because cocoa even though a foreign exchange earner is not a staple food for Ghanaians. We should look at the impact of maize cassava rice yam and other staples that consumed locally if govt fails to provide subsidies on fertilizer for them. The effect would simply be an increased cost of agricultural commodities which we consume.
  What is more, I believe we have for far too long over relied on cocoa as a source of foreign exchange. A comparison of cocoa and pepper reveals that revenue from 1 acre of pepper is about three times the revenue derived from cocoa. Secondly the gestation period for pepper is just 8 weeks as opposed to cocoa which is perineal .
  Govt and Ghanaians must move away from our over dependence on cocoa. There has never been a free mass spraying of maize or rice to boost their production yet cocoa is regularly sprayed.?

  Please check your facts on crop productivity or best practices for crop production and you will find out that chemical fertilizer application is among thee least. subsidies on fertilizer only increases indiscriminate application leading to excessive pollution loads in our water bodies.
