It is the acquisition of wrong values stupid. As the years go by, development has come by slowly to Africa even as more Africans get their classroom education, some work ethics and experiences and mostly ill acculturated values from the Diaspora. The truth is that Africans do not learn well from their surroundings except for what we learn from organized schools and or religion.
How many Africans are proud to let the world know they lived in the Americas or in Europe but mastered in carpentry, plumbing, roofing, low voltage technology etc? Yet everyone of those who understudied traditional school subjects we are all proud to have in our families, do brag and beat their chests to announce their meaningless and sometime worthless credentials in an African society where holding a masters degree and or doctorate degree is desired even if they contribute nothing to real development and needed progress in Africa. Africans, especially family members will be the first to shun family members who return to the continent/home only to become farmers or plumbers or fishermen etc. We prefer those who can sit in government offices and contribute absolutely nothing of intellectual value and or to real development but take monetary resources from the national coffers/treasury. We have misplaced value system to the extent whereby as most blue collar workers make decent living applying their skills and trade to develop and build communities with abundant food production in most of in Western worlds, we have an elite class who cannot organize research or point to anything of value they can initiate and sustain but become a drain in our communities where classroom credentials trump people who work with their God given hands and talents.
How many Africans will pay higher prices for agricultural products without crying foul? But we are and do pay any premium to own a car, fit or not fit for human travel, and be proud we did. We will starve and be car owners than live on good meal while we use government transport. Our roads are congested and yet are fed with products from all around the globe. In Ghana we have political animals blaming government for their own unsustainable lifestyles but will not patronize our farmers and fishermen. We are hollow to the bone.
