I wish the government did not buckle and stood firm to tell these “lecturers” or more appropriately “senior instructors” that the government does not have the funds to pay for “book and research” allowance; and give them ultimatum to go back and teach or get fired. May be they will lose the election but they will save the country a lot funds. The government should seriously revamp tertiary education in Ghana. They should do away with duplication of courses among the state universities and review all programs to determine their relevance to the country now or in the near future. They should then eliminate the useless ones and FIRE the corresponding lecturers. I am pretty sure they can cut the government expenditure on tertiary education by 50 percent and focus on the useful relevant programs. What is point of producing “half-educated” or illiterate graduates to sell kenkey or dog-chains?
On another point not the government should reorganize other public institutions including the civil service and state corporations. There is too much deadwood, corruption, bribery, mismanagement and poor attitude in these organizations. The heads or (senior) managers don’t care a hoot. They come to work (collect bribes, philander, steal, etc.) at 10:30am and go to lunch at 12:00pm; return at 2:00pm and go home at 4:00pm. On Fridays they just show up for a few minutes and then jet off to funerals to chase women and fill their pot bellies with booze.
I am sick and tired of weak and indecisive government, corrupt public servants, lazy lecturers and selfish inhuman doctors. May be we need a real “REVOLUTION” ; or better, patriotic nationalist leader(s) who won’t kotow to any selfish striking group of imbecilic knuckleheads who may attempt to hold the country hostage.

Seriously? "No more armed robberies, less accidents ,75% rural electrification, the best in africa in terms of developement, spread developement with very little resources, schools, hospitals, accra is now better in terms of cleanliness" Are you sure you live in Ghana? 20 people just died on the Kumasi road a few days ago. Women still sleep on the hospital floors with their babies. Lets call a spade a spade, lets be honest and acknowledge the problems and dispassionately seek the way forward and stop this blind allegiance to political parties. Whether you belong to NPP, NDC or PPP etc Ghana's is in a mess lets come together and find a solution.

People say all sots of nasty things against UTAG, but they forget that 72% of Mahama's ministers are enrolled students at the tertiary institutions. The same people they claim are useless are the same people they are depending on to obtain higher degrees. Then they will use these degrees to seek higher positions and turn round to criticize $500 a year Book and Research allowance to UTAG members. They are even more than happy when UTAG members confer doctorates degrees on them. Who now is the hypocrite.

Why talk only about mahama government, the utag is paid to teach, what about the farmer, the sweeper, everyone is important not only the the doctors, the teacher/docs etc,it's very annoying, every profession but in ghana some profession think they're important and more demanding so use it bully the authorities go on strike on every trivial issue because is president?
In some countries teachers/doctors are most humbled people and command respect but in ghana they chase money and do not work, strike ,strike in the name to make the government unpopular.

You surprise me when you bring politics into everything. My point was simple. Ministers, the general public who say UTAG does not deserve the BRA are the same people striving to go to the universities to be taught by UTAG. I never mentioned lecturers being more important, you are assuming so. What benefits will gain by making the government unpopular. Another government will not bring a magic wand so keep politics out of this. UTAG went on strike during NPP rule for the same reason.

Now what happened. NDC does not do anything right; they always does wrong things before they realize their folly. What a government and what a nation we live in. Time will tell.
