Folks,
In all honesty, I think Franklin Cudjoe's assertion and fears about the success of this project may be well grounded. However, the way and manner in which he presents his opinion is very unparliamentary.
It is a well established fact that government projects have a high proclivity towards failure due to massive corruption and mismanagement on the part of ministers and their deputies, project directors and managers, MPs, bank officials, middle level manpower as well as ground floor employees.
Accordingly, Franklin Cudjoe has a valid point but he should argue it out more intelligibly, citing specific examples such as SADA, GEEDA etc. and buttressing them with concrete facts and figures.

Any start-up airline in GH that is going to operate in the opposite manner Ghana Airways operated will surely be successful. With Ghana Airways, the employees hijacked the operations of the airline and used it for themselves. How can a plane arrive in New York JFK, outward passengers check in for their journey to Accra and their luggage is left behind? The employees, who also fronted as businessmen and women would load up the plane with their goods for sale in GH. Meanwhile paying passengers would arrive in Accra and have to trek several times to KIA to try and collect their luggage which would come in drips. There was also nothing like a confirmed reservation with the erstwhile Ghana Airways. You were not guaranteed a seat even if you were "CONFIRMED."
And then you have government officials and their wives and girl friends traveling on the airline for free.
Cudjoe needs to look at the new business model before blurting these sycophantic nonsense.

It's good to criticise the government but we all know from own studies in research critique that, negative criticism doesn't lead anyone let alone a government to any success. Instead POSITIVE or CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM is the best policy.

Not this time around since the Mahama administration has taken that lesson on board and as such opted for 5% share only from this deal, open a bid of 46% to indigenous Ghanaians and the rest to foreign investors. I was going to write about these so-called Ghana pundit who occupy the echo chambers of it's political discourse but came across this BBC person-an African I suppose, and did a double take.
A respone to Imani, would be for another time and space but what a self-defeating pundit!
But to the BBC of this African-world,what is happening to Africans with their self- hating selves? What do they see when they look in the mirror- do they see a mirror copy of themselves, as God's gift to mankind or just human perversions, or for that matter, and again for the BBC of this world, a monkey?
Fellow Africans, the world knows our contribution to mankind,we birthed it,but like all human nature, everybody wants an edge- a competitive edge and no stone would ever be unturned to achieve that.
Please, and I'll prostrate if need be, before the altar of Pan Africanism,to spare us from such self-inflicting wounds of nothingness.
We are a great Race, and it's not a feel good concept- if's for real, but We got to believe it and to act the part.
Chin up Africans.

I don't know this Imani guy from Adam, but can bet he must has read in high school "The African student in China"the Christian Science Church- endowed expose of the so called ill-treatment of Africans in China. He might have bought it hook and sinker and believed in the absolutism of private capital's efficiency.
I don't fault him- there's a semblance of truism in that belief, that is, if a nation is constructed solely as a mercantalist enterprise- for corporate profit motive, devoid of all constraints of the stakes of a nation.
Pride, dignity, etc are virtues- while they are not quantifiable and, granted would not "buy lunch or a boatload of medical supplies to the indigent" and thus not Marxism in thouhgt, they define a nation and it's people.
Mr.Imani, do a policy analysis of the whys of a failure of a public enterprise and don't echo the cliches of yesterdays of it's inefficiencies. The last time I looked the MTA works like a clock-work precision and the I-95 is clogged with motorists getting away for the last hammock-days of summer in mercantilist USA.
Mr. Imani, Africans have the know-how to run an airline, while that would not be my priority if I were advising the political powers - that- be, bullet-train national railways is my choice, and would do so as efficiently as any other national airline.
Have faith there's always a tradeoff between efficiency, and pride and dignity.

I think Franklin Cudjoe is not doing himself any good with some of his effusions which are laced with insults and all. What correlation does a tomato company have with an airline company? The fact that Pwalugu has failed does not necessarily mean that an airline arrangement will also fail.
For now, there is this seeming deliberate attempt to frustrate all government projects and programmes by imputing all manner of negativity into them.
Indeed it is a tragedy when whilst the government is looking for a strategic investor for this airline operations we should have this so-called thinker coming out to consign the programme into such monumental failure.
Our future investors are bo fools to walk into any programme which is accursed even before it is conceived.
I will not want to relate to the absurdity of Franklin Cudjoe's submission when he avers that everything that the government goes into fails and describes that a nonsense. Is it to say government should not do anything. These young men should spare us this academic arrogance. There are others who are equally smart and much more intelligent than they are and their politics of convenience should be a thing of the past.

The IMANI BOSS sounds right,here.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY GOOD IDEA TO REJUVENATE,REKINDLE,REVAMP,RESUSCITATE,EQUIP OUR NATIONAL AIRLINE,IF IT WOULD BE DEVOID OF CORRUPTION,
THE CANCER IN AFRICA.
But what is the guarantee here?
THAT'S WHY THE IMANI BOSS IS TALKING ABOUT,HERE.
I am not here claiming, government investments in Ghana is not beneficial, but there have been array of proofs to support what MR.FRANKLIN KUDJO is saying:
Where are our GUINEA FOWLS that flew to BURKINA FASO?
Where are the trees that were financed to be planted in the north?
Where are the locations of the XTS BUILDINGS?
Where was JOHN MAHAMA when ISOFOTON,WOYOME AND WATERVILLE,were all given money for no work done?
What happened recently at the WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT IN BRAZIL?
And a host of money being thrown overboard?
I think, just to throw pearls to swines, why don't we find a more profitable ways to invest it?
We need a new airport, harbour, infrastructural services, etc, but not an airline.
Many are already operating in Ghana now.
THEREFORE,IT'S NOT SOMETHING WE desperately NEED OF.

IMANI is a so called "think-tank" that criticized negatively not constructively; that does not provide a solution or help solve problems for which it was established. We spent millions of dollars using foreign airlines like Delta, US Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, etc so wouldn't it be better for us to use our own national airline? If Pwalungu Tomato factory failed, does that mean every national venture will fail? if that is the case then we should sell Ghana and move out to the Gulf of Guinea.

People, people, people.. please don't kill the messenger here. IMAMI has in most instances made very compelling cases on very misguided government policies and initiative, as well as providing sensible solutions to our national problems. Do you recall their case again excessive government borrowing and the Chinese loan for real estate development. The entire structuring of the loan facility was very convoluted and with lack of transparency, and not to talk about some powerful government interests who had already cut some sweetheart deals with the Chinese. Our current economic predicament is all tie to there lackluster decisions and grave corrupting influence of our government and its collaborators. We need several "think-tank" like IMANI who can brink a fresh perspective to our national discourse and see things as they are. The political realities in Ghana demands that people find advocacy in organization like IMANI. Lets face it, Ghana is in a serious economic stress as a country and we need serious and efficient market solutions for the airline business.
For those of you advocating for a national airline for the third time, don't you think with all the mismanagement and corruption in the 1st and 2nd operations of a Ghana airline should be put in perspective. The first Ghana airline had extensive asserts in Ghana and Europe and up until now no one has accounted for them after the demise its operations.
The IMANI is trying to make here is that before we sink millions of dollar of our national resource into a third Ghana airline, we must do the due diligence this time. There should be a serious national discourse on this venture. The people should be part of determining whether public and private investment is the best option.
Today's airline business is not like your grandmothers business. It is an enterprise that requires a serious business driven core and a lot of management and operational innovation to succeed. The track record for the government of Ghana on managing most business ventures is very abysmal.
Since the 1980's the old paradigm of running national airline has been disbanded by most developed countries. They opted for privatization and efficient management systems. The government of Ghana should help facilitate and accelerate private investment in the fledgling aviation industry by providing would class infrastructure and letting the private sector do what is does best. There are Ghanaian who have the capability to invest in the airline industry in collaboration with foreign partners, and I think the government should build incentives into the process. Leaving the operation on airlines in Ghana will help drive down cost of air travel domestically and international
My recommendation is for the government to invest in design/build world class regional and international airports. We have a deficit of three international airports and 4 regional airports. This will future facilitate tourism and related business creation. If the government wants to go down this path of a national airline again them please lets have an open national debate devoid of the politics.

I have used the erstwhile Ghana Airlines when it was in operation on several occasions. While the technical side- pilots, stewardess etc, were competent, the management side was horrible, corrupt and useless. Ghanaians cannot just manage anything well because of endemic corruption. Do not waste Ghana's tax payers money to enrich corrupt officials. A new national airline will fail again, so let us forget about national pride and start thinking and uproot corruption in our society.

sets up the new airline as PPP where the private party runs it(mostly with foreign managers) the airline will do very well. However if it allows people with the Cudjoe mentality t run it then it will fail. The key is for Mahama to get a law passed that says, the airline is outside of any political parties control regardless of who is in office. And that the minority partner(foreign) will run it. That way it will benefit the country and not individual greedy bastards we have in aces in Ghana. Set it up as a PPP(with experience airline manager) and let the private partner run it. No free tickets for any politician or his relatives. The private partners should be told not to offer any freebies to the government officials or their family. With that and keeping the right schedule and service, the airline will flourish.

We have to appreciate that there are no heroes in management. It's a learning process where patience, tact and strategy are of essence. In any case Independence was a matter of course. Nkrumah was in haste to be a hero. Alas here we are after all the hullabaloo of Africa's first independent black colony.

Let's re-establish a West African African Airways to somehow replace the defunct one of the colonial era.
This time, instead of only Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, let's invite private and corporate citizens, and, in fact, the rest of the world, to invest.
No Government from anywhere, especially our own, should be allowed to hold shares.
If we run it strictly privately, premium business-management sense will ensure its success.
If we let in Government, the politicians and all the other greedy BIG MEN will run it aground. It's not like we haven't experienced this before.
Unless we intend it to be TOTALLY private, we should not even bother.
We've collapsed everything started by Government.
The World Cup debacle is still fresh.
Why start a brand-new waste pipe?
Cudjoe is right.

There they go again...a national airline...just to create another vehicle to rake funds out of the national treasury. Revisit the history of Ghana Airways and all the other companies the government has owned in the past. The responsibility of the government is to govern effectively and not to clean gutters or run companies. Government should oversee to rid the district assemblies of massive corruption and ensure that they are used as vehicle of development. Government should ensure that proper and adequate infrastructure ( electricity, water, roads, healthcare facilities, schools, etc.) are in place to support private sector businesses and endeavors which drive the long term development of the country. What expertise does government officials have to run a national airline? Corruption?
