Ghana is a democratic country governed by laws and what POTAG and UTAG are demanding is due them by law. If the gov't had paid them as the law says, they will not be on strike. It is not what we think that matters. It is not whether they publish or not or use the money privately. It is what the law says and if we do not like it, or feel strongly that they do not deserve it, we have to change the law. Last year the outgoing parliamentarians demanded their ex-gratia because the law required it and they were paid, whether we felt they deserved it or not. Since we have not changed the law come 2017, they will demand it again. So let us find evidence to change laws if we have any strong feelings against it. Personal sentiments will not help.

The university teachers, for sure quality. I am not sure about the other institutions mentioned. I mean what sort of research does NAB conduct? What about the senior staff of the university primaries?.
These are the issues. But for govt to say it is scrapping the book and research allowance altogether is not the way to go.

The abysmal handling of this matter by the inept Mahama regime, only to capitulate to the blackmail of these lecturers is sad indeed.

We need drastic changes in how things are done in the country, which are simply making us stagnate as a developing people. These abominable and cynical book and research allowances are prime examples of why no serious research, whether instructional or devtal, can be undertaken in the country. One simply cannot privatise the acquisition of knowledge this way. It is not done in any civilised country. Why do these lecturers, for their selfish reasons, and the inept Mahama regime, want to keep Ghana a backward country>

Why do you have to even hesitate in paying something someone has dearly worked for. I've never heard of President Mahama and his cabinets crying like this for their salary or allowance . So my question is, are those people real leaders? If they are then they have to see to our needs first. They should sacrifice for us.....
