80-85 percent of what we use are imported. That is the music out there and it looks like these day every one is repeating the same thing. Most Ghanaians know that most of the items they use are imported and repeating it over and over is not necessary. The ideas to help wean ourselves from this situation is what is lacking and the present economic policies of the Mahama government is not helping either. The whole country is economically deplorable to the extend that even this year's cocoa loan may not be used to buy cocoa at all but for other very pressing problems. The poor farmers will be issued with cheques that are not covered. This is the situation Ghanaians find themselves in,between the devil and the deep blue sea.Which way now?.The road ahead is getting bumpier.

After so many years in this cocoa business, why can't Ghana manufacture her own jute cocoa sacks. This is an area ripe for import substitution. It will help reduce tremendously the cost involved in the cocoa supply chain and create a manufacturing industry to address the unemployment problem in the country. Not only the cocoa sacks, in fact, all the inputs for the cocoa industry including pesticides etc, needs to be manufactured in the country. Year in, year out all we do is to borrow foreign money to procure these inputs in an industry where we have huge comparative and competitive advantages. Cocoa Board, stop the bureaucracy and be innovative for once. Cocoa Board, Stop and re-strategize your mandate to ensure that everything along the cocoa supply chain is made in GHANA, period.
