Antiochus, this is not a case of making mountains out of a mole hill. It is a serious matter. It could have been foreseen by anybody who has any sense of political organization.

First of all the question that must be asked is that, does the NPP itself have any idea as to who should really be the administrative and political head of their party? In some cases the Gen Secretary and not the Chairman, who largely remains a fatherly and ceremonial head, assumes that role. I do not think that the NPP as a Party has made any serious considerations in this regard. The earlier they resort to do that, the better it will be for them.

As the matter stands, the NPP will now have two leaders of the Party who unfortunately, do not share similar Party principles and worse-still, they come from different opposing factions within the Party. The inevitable fratricidal war arising from this incompatible arrangement can and will only get worse with time.

As Akuffo-Addo is clearly going to win the NPP flag-bearership race, my initial reaction when Afoko won the Chairmanship race was that the NPP had shot itself in the foot or perhaps in the stomach.

Everyone with half an interest in politics in this country knows that Afoko is a die-hard Kufuor errand boy - and therefore would naturally be inclined to root for Akuffo-Addo's presidential opponent, Allan Kyeremateng - no matter the odds. Of course this does not preclude the likely tendency for Afoko to either go-slow on Akuffo-Addos presidential ambitions and possibly to discretely undermine it altogether.

I will give give the NPP some free Consultancy. Personally, between the two of them, I would advice the NPP to give more leverage to Agyepong as he is a cut-and-dried Akuffo-Addo loyalist and more importantly, he is an astute and experienced politician in his own right. He speaks well - grammatically, coherently and politically and has a more commanding public image than Afoko the Chairman.

All this brings to the fore the obvious fact that most of our political Parties do not really have any solid internal organizational structures, hirerichal arrangements nor political principles or even diplomatic strategies. The last Gen Secretary of the NPP who was a complete disaster, was apparently voted into office on the spurious and incredible belief by the king-makers of the Party that he could out-buffoon the NDC Secretary General whilst the real problems of the country were put aside to multiply and fester.

If this is what is going on in a major political Party in our country Ghana, what hope do we ordinary people who depend on them have?

In fact, as we all know already, the conference turned out to be one of the most well-organised, peaceful, successful delegates conferences ever held in the country.
