Below is the mineral production in 1967:
Gold (from Ashanti and Western Regions) --- 724,134 oz
Diamond (from the Akyem in the Eastern Region) --- 2,633,527 ct
Bauxite (from the Western Region) --- 333,458 mt
Manganese (from the Western Region) --- 596,572 mt
(Source mining policy of Ghana)
Value today:
Gold --- $1400 per oz
Diamond --- from $1500 to $150,000 per carat (Market price)
Bauxite --- $150 per mt
Manganese --- $450 per tonne
Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years. A visit to the Akyem districts would indicate the poor state of districts: bad roads, poor infrastructure. The state of the districts is not reflective of the revenue they have contributed over the last 100 years.

Minister, stop telling us RUBBISH. We put you there to think through problems and propose solutions but not to tell us what we already know. Are the mining companies in business to make losses or are they fools such that even if they are making losses, they would continue to keep the same labour force? This is not the first time this thing is happening, so what lessons were learnt by corporate Ghana in the previous instances and what solutions or measures were proposed or put in place to mitigate the risk to be posed by such exercises? No wonder we are not making any headway because you are all FOOLS there on whom Ghana is wasting resources.
