It appears property ownership fraud is on the increase in Ghana. This story is the second of its type I have come across in a week in Ghana, and many over the few months past.
The other story in the week tells of how a newly-married lady, barely 6 months into the marriage, took the ownership documents of the house the husband had just built before he met the lady to change the Title to include her name on it without the husbands knowledge.
The lady's behavior did not sit well with the diaspora sojourning husband, and when he confronted her on it. The ensuing conflict resulted in divorce. Then, when the man decided to sell the property, this ex-wife of his, upon hearing the news, rushed to court to place an injunction on the house, claiming it to be her matrimonial home.
Meanwhile, the man had rented a flat for the ex-wife to live in for which he had paid years worth of advance payment, as part of the divorce settlement.
The obvious indication seems to be that the lady only went into the marriage for wealth and properties. Now, the house case is said to be in court, compelling the buyer of the house, who is also living abroad, to prolong his stay in Ghana to fight the case, risking his job overseas.
One clear observation in these two cases is how easily it is, now, for documents to be forged with the digital technology surge in Ghana. We all need to be extra vigilant and monitor our identity particulars and ownership documents regularly. If not, we would one day wake up and realize that some mischievous elements had swindled us out of our entitlements, including inheritance, Social Security Benefits, etc.
These criminals must be made to pay dearly for the crime if found guilty. In the latter case mentioned, there are no children involved and I wonder if the marriage could have consummated. But here we are with all the entanglements that could cost the man a life-time investment. Buyers beware!!

With WASSCE and BECE there is police presence and any student caught cheating is immediately arrested. University exams demand even greater policing.
