EPA debate rages on

Advocates of the Agreement argue that the EPA will help Ghana have access to the European market which is much bigger than that of Africa.

The debate over whether to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement, EPA still rages on.

Proponents and opponents of the agreement have been expressing mixed felling about the EPA.

Advocates of the Agreement argue that the EPA will help Ghana have access to the European market which is much bigger than that of Africa.

These views were shared by the Director of Multilateral and Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr Nyame Baafi.

Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs programme “Talking Point,” Dr Baafi said most of Ghana’s exports are in raw states which have low value.

He argued that the EPA will enable Ghanaian companies to export finished goods because of ready market.

Meanwhile, the Director of Corporate Affairs and Administration of the Golden Exotic Limited, George Quaye, also shared that view.

He added that exporters can take advantage of the free market.

In a related development, a Senior Lecturer at the Economics Department of University of Ghana, Dr Eric Osei Assibey was sure the EPA will reduce poverty if signed.

The Head of Programme at the Third World Network, Tetteh Hormeku holds a contrary view.

He says the EPA will collapse local industries.
