thank you. he should name one african country who succeeded economically under IMF. SOUTH KOREA is one country who neither depended on IMF nor foreign aid to turn their economy around and today they an industrial super power. remember they launched their economic development program the same year ghana went under IMF under Rawlings administration. it can be avoided and no one want an economy which is being remote controlled by an organization called IMF. HOW MANY DEVELOPED COUNTRIES HAVE GONE TO IMF FOR HELP knowing what rules and regulation it carry's. if the united states went to china for a bail out to restructure its economy then the Prof should understand IMF is a no go area. the only problem our economy is facing is over borrowing, tax avoidance talking of big company's left off the hook and not paying their taxes, needed expansionary fiscal and monetary policies not contractionary policies of increasing taxes as the government is doing in times where consumer confidence is low. then lowering interest rates tighten screws on importation, promoting made in ghana goods and finally protecting our infant industries from competition from textiles industries from china.
tell me what IMF will do a part from the measures listed here. may be withdrawing government grants and subsidies the old IMF approach in solving economic issues. our economy is on life support and kind of sad the way things are going. the government has to tighten it screws on corruption and accountability. one area that has caused ghana alot in tax evasion is the tema harbour and they should reform that area by making importers pay their duty's at the bank just like the school tuition and fee approach so no one individual handles that money. you get your invoice on duty go to the bank pay your duty come back to the port show your invoice, the port confirms with the bank and you get your goods and every one is happy. we need fiscal discipline and serious probe into accountability and IMF should not be our last resort. we have able minded men who can revive our economy but too much political nepotism, party loyalty calling a spade a spoon and do nothing parliament got us this far. they have given the government too much free ride and blank cheques to implement measures that are currently hurting the economy. we can come out of this if the government applies some of the items listed within my comments and IMF should not be our last resort. africa should forge on its own going forward and thats the basic reason we advocated for independence.

If the TUC is saying NO to IMF, then they have to forget about pay increase since about 70% of that bailout will definitely go into paying of workers salaries, which they are demanding for.

THE POOR WORKERS.
Mahama has been offered with all the tools to make it big for Ghana, but has blown it.
Therefore,it isn't the TUC to fix it.
The TUC IS RATHER PREVENTING A FURTHER HARDSHIP,that will come,if GHANA GOES FOR A BAILOUT FROM THE IMF.
So I don't know what MR.AMOAKO-BAAH,claims here.

I wonder who appoints this man to head the Political Science Department of KUST and what he is actually teaching his students.
Ghana can ignore the IMF loans by cleaning the "system" that is rife with "waste" and that will generate enough money to help revive the economy.
By the way, NDC top politicians keep denying that the economy is on death bed so, why are they contemplating on getting IMF loans?

Even the current IMF boss has admitted the IMF didn't really help those countries they were "bailing" out.
With all your academic background, you must be advising the government to PRODUCE and EXPORT its way out of the mess it has created, and not go about borrowing at every opportunity.
You must encourage the government to wage war on GHOST names on its PAY ROLL and you must encourage the government to improve its TAX and REVENUE collections.
You must advise the government on how well to use the oil revenue, so that all citizens will benefit, e.g. use oil money for schools and hospitals and mass transportation, etc., and no, for example, the Failed STX housing programme, the Guinea Fowl and Tree planting projects, which have benefited chronies, only.

I would rather wish President Mahama's Government, focused on the points raised in your commentary than seek an IMF bail-out for the country's ailing economy.
The fact is that the terms and conditions of the IMF bail-out will potentially impose tough conditions to force the Government to cut public expenditure, withdraw all subsidies which will eventually drive up energy and food prices, increase taxation on already burdened vast majority of people in order to increase state revenue. The Government could be forced into privatisation of state assets which could potentially lead to joblessness.
The problem of this NDC Government is incompetence, corruption, waste and profligacy.

Ignore Prof. Richard Amoako Baah and the Trade Union Congress because what they said was academic and not supported with practical experience, reason and alternatives at the disposal of Ghana.
Indeed, if there are proven alternatives for Ghana, the IMF would refuse a bail out application for aid, because the Fund is the last resort.
The President had already indicated that he would exorcize the ghosts undermining stability of the economy to avoid the IMF path.
Focus on that alternative.

I am NDC and have always voted NDC. However, this is about our country hence our lives. The position of the Secretary General of the TUC is flawed but should not be discounted at its face value. If Mr Asamoah is putting guided pressure on the government so to influence and shape Ghana's economic strategies, then, I agree with him. I say so because the Mahama government has far too long been disappointingly indifferent, slow, sluggish and woefully inept in shaping any settled and consistent fiscal policies for the country. At the moment, the country requires the TUC's ruthless hand to help install discipline and remove wanton waste and/or corruption from our society. Otherwise, I would say that telling the government to increase wages in the face of our crumbling economy whilst limiting its options to access funding is both undesirable and unethical. For that reason, I fully agree with the Prof.
