I do not know where and how the author of the article came to believe that the NPP is a shadow Republicans. Whilst we thank him for the little bit of history, especially of Ronald Reagan we advise him not to let his coat tighten around his body.
The NPP introduced the National Health Insurance scheme in Ghana and Obama copied from us and brought his Obamacare. I do not think that it would pursue Republican policies like abolishing the NHIS when it wins power again. The NPP is more pro-poor than the NDC which can even dole $26 million of taxpayers money to a cook who did nothing for the state.

Kwame Nkrumah fought against people the likes of Danquah, Busia and a whole host of educated but unwise Ghanaians who would rather continue to be slaves than be free under Nkrumah. The NPP came up with have baked ideas that were not well debated, piloted, funded and or with the slightest chance of being self financed, self-sustaining but because of political expedience and temporary victories. If this is your idea of wisdom them Ghana is doomed.
In 2001 when the NPP under Kufour came to power and proposed the NHIS the state of Massachusetts had already implemented state-wide health system. It was not a new idea and or original thinking by the NPP intellectuals, Opanin. If you and your bunch think a nation like Ghana is better because everyone of its citizens dreaming of getting rich and or being successful at business has to serve in Ghana's parliament or office of the presidency then you are as smart as the next moron in the NDC party. Every member of the NPP and NDC in Ghana has gotten rich; they did not come into politics being rich. J.J. Rawlings, J.A.Kufour, Atta-Mills, Mahama and all their henchmen have become rich at the expense of Ghana and that is not a sign or character trait of any pro-poor people I know. By the way you forgot that Reagan would rather see South African blacks languish as second class citizens because it was better for American companies to profit from their investments in businesses of the minority white government of South Africa; it took the Democratic Party and their allies to force divestiture upon American companies. Oh I forgot, Opanin, I know darn too well that money is the god of the Republican Party as it is of the NPP. You can see the similarities of the NPP of Ghana and the Republican party at play a love of money above human life and of liberties.

You do not become someone by quoting that person. One thing that should not exit your mind is, there is no sense in creating a "big government" that becomes a "drain" on the nation as Mahama is doing.
Does it make sense to tax people to death as NDC is doing?

By the way, you seem to have caught the bug. Ghana hardly has a tax base and you think Mahama is taxing people to death? We need money to build roads and do so many things. We have to pay for it. We cannot borrow it all like we are doing. We need to pay taxes at some point to pay for the country's needs. You will probably point to corruption. It is a different issue. It does not mean we cannot have a tax base to take care of our country.

Taxation is the primary source of government revenue but are we applying it in a commonsensical way? Look, Ghana should stop that "freebies" she is doling out to some people. The government should stop housing the police, politicians and others. As long as people get paid, they should be able to make ends meet by housing themselves and let the government use that money for other national emergencies.
Mahama said sometime ago that the nation loses at least, One hundred million dollars at the ports each month so, what is the solution? Plucking the leaks can save that "tax mentality" this government is embarking upon because it is the poor who are being forced to support the government while the rich are siphoning monies away without paying any tax. Do you know that Mahama and most of the government appointees are not paying taxes.
I know we have to pay for developmental purposes but there are so many ways to do that than what NDC is doing. Oh, I forget to remind you that the former late president Mills was a tax professor but did nothing about our tax structure.

If NPP is a Republican party, than I am all for them because I have never seen such an evil party as the NDC in my life. They came to destroy what others have built. Real democratic party do not steal from the very people they are suppose to help. Talking about roads, can't you see all the roads, dams, renovation of schools, implementation of social services programs that the NPP initiated that have been abandoned or destroyed by the so called social democratic party? Ghanaians are wide awake now so no amount of propaganda will wash, and mind you nobody should try and rig the election in 2016, because if it happens again people will flea the county to go and spend the money they have stolen from us if they survive. We want solutions to the problems facing us not Propaganda.

I could not disagree more with the author of this article, Mr. Tony Pobee-Mensah! I am also more sympathetic with the NPP than with the other political parties in Ghana, and I can assure you that II was a dues paying unabashed Republican when I lived in the United States. I am completely in favor of the idea of "limited government". That is the first reason why I was inclined to be a Republican when I lived in the United States, and that is the reason that would make me more sympathetic to the NPP than other political parties in Ghana. My second reason was that a system in which government controls everything invites massive corruption. We are seeing that in Ghana, and we have seen the increasing corruption in the United States as well. My third reason is that "journalists" in any country are actually "propagandist", and one has to be careful accepting as gospel the things they write - such as this pablum regarding the forgetfulness of Ronald Reagan. On that score, I must state that Barack Obama, who is forty years younger than Ronald Reagan has been shown on live TV to also be forgetfull from time to time, and Obama has also been shown to be completely wrong on basic facts about any number of things - such as when Obama was shown on live TV stating that the language of the people of Austria was "Austrian. In fact it is German. While Tony Pobee Mensah has a right to his views on Ronald Reagan, this rejoinder is written to merely state that like-minded people can can disagreements on specific points. We should be so lucky to have the NPP as the Republican Party of Ghana. Of course it is not, but it does have certain ideological similarities. The power of the American system is the empowerment of the ordinary people of America! I live in Ghana now, and I see the interference of the central government in everything that goes on in Ghana. I must remind my readers that the personal computer which has become ubiquitous was invented by two individuals in a garage in California without any government interference! The latest things we see now in Ghana is the VAT on financial services, just at a time when the government is trying to encourage people to save their money in banks. Now, I ask you as a reasonable thinking person, would you put your money in a situation where you are subject to the government taking more of it than they do right now? At 70 plus years, Ronald Reagan was no more forgetful than any one else at that age. Leadership consists of making people believe in themselves, and making those people -using their own initiatives, to make things happen. By this measure, Ronald Reagan was a giant! Ronald Reagan succeeded Jimmy Carter who was a nuclear physicist. Intellectually brilliant though Jimmy might have been, he was a miserable "leader". I lived in America at the time - and for many years and I can attest that the mood of that country was very bad under Jimmy Carter. Sometimes the worst leaders are those who are supposed to have so much academic background. Ronald Reagan was a Hollywood actor with only a bachelors degree in economics but he did something extraordinary for his people. The NPP in Ghana has its own problems. We saw under Kuffuor that NPP was just as capable of being totally corrupt. Office holders in the NPP administration played fast and loose with the treasury of Ghana. I am told that each political party in Ghana wants to create its own "millionaires" who would then be counted on to help finance their parties when they are out of power. Just as the NDC's Jerry Rawlings went from a yorke-gari borrowing threadbare junior military officer to one of the richest men in Ghana, there was a Regional Minister in the NPP government who also went from being threadbare to owning cocoa farms and herds of cattle in the eight years Kuffuor was in power. Look. Corruption is everywhere in the world. The problem we have in Ghana is whether the government of the day makes the country a better place. So far, the answer is no for the current NDC government, and equally no (but less so) for the preceding Kuffuor government. When the NDC government would use US$56 million to upgrade or build clinics or schools throughout Ghana rather than divert that amount to Woyome, then we will be seen as making some progress. It is an article of faith for those of us who believe in small government that cutting taxes is a good thing. I wish I could see that mindset in Ghana. Cutting taxes, and therefore having less money to blow, forces a certain discipline in the process. Ronald Reagan did it for American. In my view, it was a good thing he did. I wish the Ghana political class would also think in terms of cutting taxes for the Ghanaian people.

Ghana has no tax base. What taxes are they going to cut?
There are people who are afraid to buy food in the streets. There are many issues involved in this: Should the people selling the food have the right to sell what they sell? If you eat that food and get sick and die, whose fault is it? Should government have regulations to ensure food safety? Does Ghana have such regulation now? How does smaller government ensure food safety?
America has Food and Drug Administration FDA to ensure food safety. Even Reagan won’t think of getting rid of FDA. We need to grow our government to a certain level so we have no room for tax cut at this time.
If you agree that we need paved roads, how will you pay for them without taxes? We have been borrowing to pay for our roads so far. Isn’t it about time we changed the course?
Those people who invented computers did it with government grant. Research it and you will find out. I will use the following to illustrate my point:
Cell phones exist because of satellite, right? How many private companies did the research to put satellites in the skies? NASA, meaning US government put satellites in the skies to make Sprint and all those cell phones companies possible.
The man who created IBM was a salesman selling anything that someone would buy until he got US military contract to produce and supply them business machines, meaning typewriters and then IBM became IBM.
There is such a need for government that we in Ghana have not attained. We can’t blindly say cut taxes and private companies will take care of things. We need sanitary sewer for crying out loud. Tell me what private company will provide storm water drainage system? Or do you want to wait until your home floods before you ask for government to do something? Please think a little bit.
You are not going to convince me that Reagan was better than Carter. Those who hate Carter have created a narrative. I thought he was a good president. Carter had a lower budget deficit each year that he was in office. He left office with the budget deficit lower than when he came in. Reagan left office with the budget deficit higher than when he took office meaning he borrowed to pay for his tax cut. Is this what you want for Ghana? By the way, REAGAN RAISED TAXES TOO. Research it and you will find out.
You cannot say that NPP has Republican Party tendencies and then say that they are not NPP. Another point, my article was not about corruption. It has nothing to do with whether NPP is the Republican Party of Ghana.
Sorry I had to write so much.
